Stone Lithography 3-day Summer School with Paul Croft RE TMP RCA

Translated literally, Lithography means ‘to write on stone’ and it works on the principle that water and oil do not mix. Stone Lithography is a technique still favoured by many artists because it offers the opportunity to draw and paint directly onto a unique tactile drawing surface, allowing the artist to create a huge range of marks and tones in their images. On this Masterclass summer school you will learn how to paint with water-tusche washes and explore the astonishing 'reticulated washes' peculiar to stone lithography, as well as using traditional approaches to mark-making using lithography crayons, pencils, and ink. On Day 2 you will be joined by a second tutor who will teach you how to create unique monoprinted backgrounds to overprint with your lithographs. This course gives a comprehensive introduction to Stone Lithography and at the end of this three-day summer school you will leave with a small edition of your work and a deeper knowledge of this exciting medium. Susie Turner - Masterclass: Introduction to Solar Plate

Book an Assisted Open Access Day at same time as Susie Turner Masterclass and Save £10! Description Solar plate printmaking uses a metal plate coated in a light-sensitive polymer to create either a relief printing plate or an intaglio printing plate. On this two-day course you will learn how to use a UV exposure unit and natural sunlight to create both types of plate, and how to develop them in water. Using hand-drawn and photographic artwork as well as found objects and natural materials, you will be able to explore the delicate sensitivity and potential of this non-toxic technique to capture intricate details. You will be able to experiment with blind embossing, masking, and combining plates. By the end of the course, you will have created a variety of prints to take home. Holiday Family Printmaking Day – Reduction printing & Drypoint

An opportunity for the whole family to spend a fun day together exploring printmaking in a professional studio. Learn drypoint etching – how to use the different tools to make your image, how to apply ink and how to print using a press. Add Chine collé for colour and new shapes. Bring a drawing or photo (approx. A5) to trace draw for your print. Using polystyrene tiles, print by hand to create a multi coloured layered reduction print – a technique you can repeat at home. Bring an A5 2 or 3 coloured image to use for inspirations. Adults and children work together learning printmaking skills, print individually and collaboratively. Go home with lots of original prints, and maybe discover a hidden talent for printmaking! Drawing through to Print - 3-day Summer School with Charles Shearer RCA

An opportunity to develop ideas directly from observations and drawings of the immediate area around the studios. The landscape in the village of Great Thurlow offers quaint cottages, old stable and farm buildings, the Hall and church, and open fields where a fine herd of horned cattle may be grazing... lots to inspire you. A full demonstration will be given at every stage. Course structure Day 1 • After a brief talk on the print processes you will use spend the morning and early afternoon out drawing and gathering material in the area • Back in the studio mid afternoon, to start building up an early body of work by developing a selection of ideas and drawings through simple stencil & mono-print processes with inked rollers, acetates and cut newsprint Day 2 • Using card cutting (collagraph), continue to build on your develop your work using a range of tools, some adapted or adopted specifically for this purpose • Add the application of textured material that gives this process its unique character • Learn about and use a variety of inks and papers • Print by hand and use presses Day 3 • Continue developing and combining ideas and images through the day • At the end of the day we will view and discuss work and the processes used Pre course information Please bring a sketchbook/notebook. Introduction to Screen Printing

Screen printing is sometimes called serigraphy or silk screen printing but all these names refer to the same basic method of creating an image on paper or fabric by pushing ink through a screen mesh with areas blocked off by stencils. Stencils can be made from paper, drawing fluid, screen filler or a light sensitive emulsion. This introductory course is perfect for those wishing to get to grips with the basics of screen printing. Learn how to create images using paper stencils. How to overlap stencils to create multi coloured images, to register an image and how to set up the equipment, mix inks and use a squeegee to print your images onto paper. Course structure • Explanation of the process and looking at examples • Introduction to the equipment and how to set it up • Planning your image • How to cut paper stencils and apply them to the screen • How to mix inks and importance of opacity and transparency of colours in screen printing • Registration with the acetate and on the board • How to flood and pull a print • Trouble shooting Experience level Suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. Introduction to Cyanotype

Cyanotype is an early photographic process which produces a cyan-coloured print. It was used by Anna Atkins to illustrate the first book with photographic images. The process was adopted by engineers and architects as a way of producing copies of drawings – hence the term ‘blueprint’. On this course you will explore the possibilities for creating both Cyanotypes from drawn and photographic images and Photograms from found objects. You will use both a UV exposure unit and sunlight (weather permitting). Introduction to Woodcut

A form of relief printmaking, a Woodcut image is created when the side grain of a piece of wood is cut away leaving the remaining raised areas to be inked and printed. The marks are less detailed than wood engraving, with the character of the wood often a visible part of the final image. On this introductory course, learn how to plan, cut and print an image from a 115 x 150 mm piece of Japanese plywood. Print onto traditional and contemporary papers, using hand burnishing and a relief press. • Explanation of woodcut printing and looking at examples • Introduction to equipment and cutting techniques • Plan your image and cut the design • Use of rollers and how to ink up your block • Create additional colours using masking and over-printing Pre course information Bring an image to inspire your print, suitable for a 115 x 150 mm piece of wood. An opportunity to work with Stone Lithographer Paul Sharrock, alongside artists on an ongoing stone lithography course. Spend a studio day learning a specific skill in depth within this traditional technique. Experience level For those who have some experience in Stone Lithography and aim to develop new skills within their stone lithography practice. Jason Hicklin – Etching Summer School

Artist printmaker Jason Hicklin will share his vast experience of working in etching in this 3 day summer school, exploring three different etching techniques. Jason studied at St. Martins College of Art, where he was a student of renowned printmaker Norman Ackroyd. He went on to combine working as Ackroyd’s studio assistant and editioner with producing his own work and teaching printmaking at City and Guilds of London Art School. Jason is currently Head of Printmaking at City and Guilds. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painting and Printmakers in 1993 and has had numerous solo and joint exhibitions in the UK and abroad. Course structure Day 1 • Explanation of Etching techniques and viewing examples of Jasons’s prints • Explore the possibilities of the oldest etching technique: Hard Ground Etching • Prepare your plate and continue the process, through to printing from your plate using an etching press Day 2 • Work on Soft Ground Etchings, from preparing your plate through to printing using an etching press Day 3 • Sugarlift & Aquatint • Bring all three processes together to continue to develop your work, creating unique prints Pre course information No pre-course preparation required, but you may like to bring images to inspire your prints Experience level Suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. Intaglio Solar plate Taster

Solar plate printmaking is an environmentally friendly print process in which light-sensitive plates are exposed using daylight or an artificial source of UV light. On this introductory course, you will learn how to translate hand-drawn images, photographs, text, and delicate found objects easily and quickly into high-quality intaglio prints. You will learn how to develop the plates simply with water and print them in the same way as an etching, drypoint or any other 'intaglio' print process. Letterpress printing was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th contrary and is a relief printing technique using wood or metal type. Learn the basic elements of typesetting and printing using an Adana 8x5 press, an Albion relief press and a Hewitt Bros proofing press. Create and print your own greetings cards, bookmarks, postcards, or small poster. You will take home a bundle of letterpress printed goodies.
