About this event

Translated literally, Lithography means ‘to write on stone’ and it works on the principle that water and oil do not mix. Stone Lithography is a technique still favoured by many artists because it offers the opportunity to draw and paint directly onto a unique tactile drawing surface, allowing the artist to create a huge range of marks and tones in their images. On this Masterclass summer school you will learn how to paint with water-tusche washes and explore the astonishing 'reticulated washes' peculiar to stone lithography, as well as using traditional approaches to mark-making using lithography crayons, pencils, and ink. On Day 2 you will be joined by a second tutor who will teach you how to create unique monoprinted backgrounds to overprint with your lithographs. This course gives a comprehensive introduction to Stone Lithography and at the end of this three-day summer school you will leave with a small edition of your work and a deeper knowledge of this exciting medium. Course structure • A brief history of lithography and looking through examples • Preparing the stone • Applying lithographic drawing materials to create your image • Processing your stone (chemical etching) • Inking and printing your stone onto a variety of papers • Monoprinting backgrounds for your lithographs • Further printing and experimenting with plate lithography layered textures and stencilling • An end review of the prints Pre-course information Any image preparation notes will be sent prior to...
