Ferments, Salads and Dips

This class will be centred on seasonal vegetables, leaves, pulses and grains, and on lactic fermentation specifically, as well as the health benefits that fermented foods bring to your diet. During the core part of this course, we will be making three different styles of lactic ferments and applying the core principles you’ll need to grasp in order to ferment safely and effectively. We’ll start with a standard sauerkraut, delve into the wonders of kimchi, and finish with preserved lemons and quick pickles. Vicky will also make two salads and a dip. You’ll get to take the ferments home and care for them as they bubble and ferment away! Throughout the course, we’ll provide you with alternative tips and recipe inspiration so you can tailor your new skills to your personal environment and taste.

Enamel Bowl

Heather, who leads our popular Introduction to Enamelling workshop, has created this new Bowl Making Day to help you build on your enamelling skills while exploring traditional copper-forming techniques. Learn how to create your own unique enamel bowl from scratch using copper. You’ll begin by making a small trinket dish while learning techniques such as annealing, planishing, and shaping metal by hand. Once you’ve completed your practice piece, you’ll move on to designing and creating your own finished bowl. You’ll spend the rest of the day decorating your copper form with enamel before it is kiln-fired and ready to take home. Please note: Materials are £10 per person and include one trinket dish. Additional bowls will be charged at cost, plus the enamel used. For example, a bowl costing £8 would require approximately £16 of enamel. Bowl sizes and enamel costs will vary. Warning: enamelling can be addictive!

Introduction to Botanical Watercolour

During this one day workshop, Karen will use the medium of watercolour to inspire Students to start to explore the various and extensive techniques that are possible in producing a simple finished piece of botanical art. The Great Wheel

Stained Glass - Beautiful Copper Foil Leaf Decorations

Everyone loves stained glass and the gorgeous effect of the light streaming through it. Well imagine being able to make your own gorgeous glass decorations to hang at the window or in front of a light source. This one day copper foil stained glass workshop will introduce you to the art of making stained glass using the copper foil method. Your subject will be leaves - perfect for an Autumn palette or go green and think of Spring! During this one day workshop you will make a small selection of copper foil leaf decorations. Ink Making from Plants

In this workshop participants will be guided through the various stages of working with plants to create colourful inks. There is a remarkable variety of colours that are possible and during the workshop there will be demonstrations of how to modify colours to achieve a further spectrum of results. Working with plant sources, both foraged and grown, we will look at how the colours from plants were used historically with plenty of pre made colours to experience throughout the day. Participants will go home with extensive notes on the subject as well as some freshly made ink from the day. No prior experience required, just a willingness to experiment!

Blacksmithing -Swallow Sculptures

Forge your own gorgeous swallow sculpture on this hands-on day whether you are new to blacksmithing or want to try your hand at something different. Blacksmith/sculptor Adrian Wood brings forges and anvils and you will go home with a bespoke swallow sculpture for your garden. During the day you will: – Understand the properties of the metals you will be forging – Handle the tools and equipment correctly – Learn how to work safely with fire and hot metal – Make a swallow sculpture All materials are included in the price of the course. Please note that the day is fairly strenuous. There is a lot of thick metal and hammering! If you have any fitness or health issues please let us know. Paper Making with Plants

In this workshop, artist Lucy Lee will run through the basics of paper making, from recycling paper right through to making paper entirely from foraged plants. You will be shown how to use plant material and flowers when preparing pulp, as dyes, and as decorative features. A variety of pulps will be prepared for you to get you making straight away, giving you a good practical understanding of how to make paper. There will be a variety of different-sized screens for you to use, and you will go home with a good selection of your own handcrafted papers. Making paper is a beautiful craft and can be used to memorialise important occasions by using dried flowers to frame poetry and word art, to make cards and notebook covers, or to simply frame plants and flowers special to you. All equipment used can be easily found/made or bought for paper this the perfect new craft to add to your skill set!

Weave Your Own Scarf/Snood Using a Table Loom

Spend the day weaving your very own scarf or snood using an eight shaft table loom. Each loom with be set up and ready to use, meaning you can enjoy weaving for the whole day. There will be lots of different fibres, textures and colours to choose from to create your own bespoke outcome. Participants will be given one to one support as well as watching group demonstrations. This workshop is suitable for beginners. Some participants can find weaving all day quite a physical activity. Participants often stand to use the looms though sitting is also an option. All equipment and materials are provided for use during the workshop. Please note a materials charge £17.50 is payable on the day.

Festive Willow Stags Head

In a day spent with willow sculptor Jess Wilkinson you will learn the techniques and tips needed to work with and shape willow. Jess Wilkinson will guide you through this intensive day of willow weaving to create a beautiful festive stags head to take home and install in the garden or indoors. You will learn techniques and tips to help you work with willow, including how to source the right kind of willow for sculpture, what tools you will need and how to approach the work bit by bit and weave a solid structure. Stone Setting in Silver Jewellery

Stone setting is the craft of securely and accurately fixing stones and gems into jewellery. On this quite intensive workshop you have the chance to learn some basic silversmithing techniques, making a very simple ring. You will then set a number of stones into a silver setting suitable for mounting either on the ring or finishing as earrings or a pendant. Gelli Plates and Printing

Join Kirstie Williams for a fun day exploring the exciting process of gelli printing! Printing from gelatine plates is a type of monoprinting which is instant and effective without the need for a press. Using water based inks you will explore a range of different effects from bold colourful textures to more subtle colours and patterns. You will be encouraged to overprint layers and build up interesting compositions. During this workshop you will: -Be introduced to all things gelli printing - different plates, prints and effects -Make your own gelatine plate, so you can continue the fun once back home! - Use paper stencils/geometrics/overlaying techniques - Use foliage/plants to create botanical type prints - Use found materials/textures to make prints - Experiment with image transfer This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. Those with previous experience may wish to use the session to develop their skills or gain tutor advice and guidance. You will come away from the workshop with a wide range of different monoprints from the gelatine plates printed on A4 cartridge paper. All materials and equipment will be provided. If you have any found materials such as leaves, lace, threads, doilies etc feel free to bring them along as these all work well to create interesting textures and patterns.

Seasonal Ceramic Wreaths

Design and make your own unique and beautiful hanging autumnal (or Christmas if you are thinking ahead!) wreath from stoneware clay with Charlotte Morrison. Perfect to hang in a window, hook on a fireplace or on your tree. Make one large wreath of around 20cm diameter plus some smaller experimental practice pieces. You will learn how to plan your piece, prepare, roll, texture and cut the clay, fix leaves and other sculpted items to form the wreath and apply finishing touches. Please note there is a £20 material charge payable on the day. The materials charge includes the cost of firing and it is payable on the day.
