Hand Embroidery - Textured Textiles

Textiles and embroidery are so tactile and perfect to use to create a new dimension to your work. In this creative workshop you’ll explore different hand embroidery stitches and techniques to add texture in to textiles including creating and removing layers, using unusual materials, combining materials, using stitch to create perceived texture, using sandpaper and much more. The morning is dedicated to experimenting with a range of techniques creating a mini series of samples to inspire future work. The afternoon is spent putting these new found skills into place and creating a piece of textile art, full of stitch and texture that is unique to you. By the end of the workshop you will have learnt many ways to add texture to textiles, have a series of mini samples and a piece of beautiful, unique artwork. The workshop is suitable for people of all levels of embroidery experience from the complete beginner to the more accomplished embroiderer. Step back in time and experience the meditative rhythm of long draw spinning using the iconic Great Wheel - a traditional tool with roots stretching back to medieval Europe and beyond. Led by experienced spinner and craftsman Chris Helliwell, this full-day hands-on workshop is perfect for beginners and textile enthusiasts alike. You'll gain a deep understanding of traditional spinning methods and leave with new skills and a greater appreciation for the history of fibre. What You’ll Learn: - How to process and wash fleece from raw wool - Carding techniques to prepare fibres for spinning - Spinning with a simple spindle - Introduction to long draw spinning - a fluid and efficient technique using just one hand to draft - Hands-on practice with a Great Wheel - plus table wheels and even bicycle wheel variations (we have 6 wheels available) You'll also explore the fascinating history of spinning from ancient civilisations through the medieval adoption of the Great Wheel in Europe. Weave Your Own Scarf/Snood Using a Table Loom

Spend the day weaving your very own scarf or snood using an eight shaft table loom. Each loom with be set up and ready to use, meaning you can enjoy weaving for the whole day. There will be lots of different fibres, textures and colours to choose from to create your own bespoke outcome. Participants will be given one to one support as well as watching group demonstrations. This workshop is suitable for beginners. Some participants can find weaving all day quite a physical activity. Participants often stand to use the looms though sitting is also an option. All equipment and materials are provided for use during the workshop. Please note a materials charge £17.50 is payable on the day.

Make a Wonderful Living Wreath - Afternoon Session

This is a fun half day session where Sue will show you how to make a living wreath, one that will last, continuing to grow and develop new flowers and foliage. Certainly not a "throw-away" decoration. Once made, keep it moist and it will stay beautiful for weeks. You will learn how to create your living wreath (it could even be a table centre at the weekend!), using moss, bedding plants and other foraged elements. All materials and bedding plants are included in the material fee and will be provided by the tutor but please bring anything from your garden such as twigs, interesting foliage or grasses or any special items you may wish to incorporate in your wreath. There is a £15 material fee payable on the day to cover the cost of wreath rings, moss and wire and bedding plants to make a single 12-14inch wreath. Creating Delicate Felted Landscapes

Create a painterly landscape using the wet felting technique. On this one-day workshop you will be guided through the steps Valérie uses when creating her own felt artwork. You will be encouraged to explore the qualities and behaviours of wool fibres, silk threads and fabrics through the wet-felting process. Working from your own starting point such as a favourite photograph, painting, collage, you will develop your piece gradually, applying fibres, threads and inserts in fine layers. At the end of the day, you can expect to take away with you a (mostly) finished felt artwork. This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability from beginners to experienced felters, and only requires that you engage your own creativity. Hardback Book Binding

Join book artist Ruth McCann for a creative and rewarding day learning the craft of traditional hardback bookbinding. This workshop introduces the essential techniques used to make a classic hardbound book from start to finish. Perfect for beginners or those looking to refine their hand-binding skills. Morning Session: Sewing and Structure The day begins with an introduction to book structure and materials, including an understanding of paper grain direction and precise folding methods that ensure a strong and flexible finished book. Learners will fold and prepare their paper sections (signatures), then sew them together using traditional bookbinding stitches. Once sewn, participants will glue up the spine and attach endpapers, creating the text block, the heart of the book. Along the way, Ruth will introduce a range of traditional bookbinding tools and materials, discussing their purposes, techniques for safe and effective use, and tips for working with professional results. Afternoon Session: Making and Casing the Hard Cover After lunch, learners will move on to creating a hardback case (book cover). Using a selection of decorative papers and book cloth, participants will design and construct their own covers, cutting and assembling the boards and spine piece with care and precision. Once the covers are complete, learners will case in their text blocks, the satisfying final stage where the pages and cover come together to form a finished hardback book.

Glorious Gouache: A Perfect Start to Painting

An accessible, forgiving, and wonderfully versatile painting workshop If you've ever wanted to start painting but didn’t know where to begin - this is the workshop for you. Gouache (say it “gwash”) is the ideal medium for beginners and experienced painters alike. It’s affordable, easy to use, and incredibly forgiving: it blends beautifully, wipes away easily when you make a mistake, and can be used thin like watercolour or thick and bold like acrylic. Once the darling of illustrators, graphic artists, and designers, gouache was somewhat overshadowed by digital tools like Photoshop — but it’s making a huge comeback, and for good reason. Already paint with watercolours? Great news- you don’t need to buy any new kit. Gouache is water-soluble and plays well with your existing brushes, palettes, and paper. In fact, masters like John Singer Sargent often combined the two in their work to great effect. Whether you're a total beginner or a watercolourist curious to expand your painting practice, this joyful, hands-on workshop, led by talented tutor Jason Skill, will help you fall in love with glorious Gouache and leave with confidence to keep painting long after the class ends.

Mosaic stone

Create your very own mosaic stone for your home or garden. Mosaic stones are perfect to use as a doorstop or to add a little extra colour to the garden or outside area. Under the expert tutelage of Ruth Wilkinson, you'll spend the first hour of the workshop deciding on your design and transferring it onto your stone, this will then be followed by demonstrations and a chance to practice using the cutting tools for the tesserae before you begin creating. There will be lots materials to choose from to create your design and lots of inspiration from books and stencils.The stones will be provided as they need to be a specific shape and size. Blacksmithing - Fire + BBQ Tools with Ramshead Handles

A rare opportunity to have a hands-on day of blacksmithing - working hot metal by hand and finding out how to create a ramshead handle. Blacksmith/sculptor Adrian Wood brings with him anvils, tools and mobile forges and whether you are a complete beginner or have some prior experience, you will go home with your own unique set of fire or BBQ irons. Make a range of items such as a poker with decorative handle, a shovel, a toasting fork, BBQ scraper etc.. - Understand how to work safely with fire and hot metal. - Learn how to handle the tools and equipment correctly. - Create a number of items with your own hands. - Learn how to fashion a ramshead design. Please note that the day is fairly strenuous and if you have any fitness or health issues please let us know. The workshop takes place outdoors but undercover. In this workshop, Lisa-marie will guide you through the rewarding process of creating your very own mosaic jewellery using an array of tiny treasures, including mini tiles, vintage china shards and glass beads. This class is suitable for complete beginners, those with a little experience, or anyone keen to explore how to upcycle items such as crockery or broken jewellery in an artful, contemporary way. Under Lisa-marie’s expert guidance, you’ll learn the direct method of mosaic application on a small scale, perfect for pendants, brooches, or statement earrings. The session will begin with exploring design ideas and mapping out your jewellery piece(s), with plenty of inspiration and examples on hand. Lisa-marie will demonstrate safe cutting and shaping techniques before you begin assembling your unique designs. A wide selection of crockery, glass, tiles and other decorative elements will be provided, along with silver plated and metal finish jewellery trays. The grouting and finishing process will also be demonstrated in detail, with clear instructions and a take-home kit so you can complete your jewellery with confidence. Feel free to bring your own sentimental crockery, broken jewellery, or tiny treasures to incorporate into your designs. A perfect way to upcycle and preserve cherished memories.

No previous experience is necessary. Tara has been making personalised handprint and fingerprint jewellery from metal clay since 2010 with Joy Impressions. The course will not involve handprints or fingerprints (unless you want to impress your own fingerprint in the silver!) but you will make a simple pendant or 2 or a pair of earrings in silver art clay that you will be able to take home at the end of the day. Join experienced artist Lynn Ward for a day of exploring the medium of acrylics. Let Lynn guide you through all the processes involved in creating your very own masterpieces - from mixing colours to picking the correct brush to create the desired effect. This course is a great stepping stone for beginners or artists with a little more experience who just wanting a reason to dust off their brushes!
