Weekly Community Garden Volunteer Sessions (Drop-In)

When: Every Friday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Drop-in basis) About: Step into our beautiful, thriving community permaculture garden for a day of connection, learning, and growth! Our weekly drop-in sessions are the heart of our green space, where volunteers come together to cultivate not just plants, but a vibrant community. This is your chance to get your hands in the soil, meet like-minded people, and learn practical, hands-on skills. What might you do on a Friday? You could be planting seeds in our 6 raised beds, nurturing seedlings in the greenhouse or polytunnel, learning to maintain our hazel coppice, tending to our fruit trees, or turning our compost system. Explore Edinburgh’s first Seed Library and join our special Seedy Social Seed Library sessions to swap, share, and learn about seed saving. Beyond growing, sessions can involve garden planning, creative nature crafting, food preserving workshops, or community DIY projects. Every task is a chance to learn and contribute. This is a truly collaborative space; we collectively decide what we grow, and volunteer input directly shapes our activities. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or have never held a trowel, you are welcome to join for an hour or the whole day to enjoy the peace of the garden and give back to the community. Community Lunch Every week, we join the community lunch from 1 – 2pm.

TWIM Meditation

When Saturday, 10:45 – 12:15 About the Event Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation (TWIM) is a meditation practice rooted in the original teachings of the Buddha, particularly as taught by American-born monk Bhante Vimalaramsi. It emphasizes the development of insight (vipassanā) through tranquility (samatha) and mindfulness. The core of the practice is the 6R process, which is used to skillfully handle distractions and cultivate the 8 Jhana levels of a rapturous, collected mind. The six R steps are: 1:Recognize when the mind has become distracted. 2:Release the distraction by letting go of the thought. 3:Relax the tension in both the body and mind. 4Re-smile to bring a lightness and joy into the practice. 5:Return to the object of meditation, usually the feeling of loving-kindness (mettā) or the breath. 6:Repeat the process whenever the mind wanders. TWIM also integrates the use of loving-kindness as a meditation object and how this wholesome state of mind naturally develops through the divine obodes or Brahmaviharas, which can lead to the understanding of dependent origination, with a focus on experiencing the impersonal nature of thoughts and feelings, thus leading to the cessation of craving and suffering. About the Facilitator Ross Deighton With over 2 decades of experience in meditation and seeking higher truth and enlightenment. Ross had tried many different meditation systems.

Why am I so angry

3 key strategies to begin re-claiming your happiness and let go of anger for good. When Saturday 18th April 15:00-17:00 About the Event: Anger is a very normal and natural feeling. It’s what defines your boundaries and alerts you to when they are broken. The problem is, how we express our anger is important because if it’s not managed properly it can chip away at our relationships, limit our opportunities and destroy our happiness. In this two hour workshop you will learn a handful of key strategies to manage angry behaviours and begin to uncover the root causes of why you’re feeling this way. About the Facilitator: Hi I’m Ben, I provide the tools to help you express your anger more calmly so you can find the peace and happiness you and others around you deserve. I have been working in the field of anger management since 2017. Beginning as a client in the British Association of Anger Management (BAAM)’s programmes, I was then invited to train as a coach and completed my Anger Academy diploma in 2023. Contact: www.managing-anger-programme.com Accessibility Library is wheelchair accessible. The Salisbury Centre’s kitchen door and toilet are now wheelchair accessible. The Garden can also be accessed by wheelchairs via a movable ramp via the Art Room Annex. Please let the organisers know in advance of any access requirements. Additionally, if relevant, please fill in this PEEP template and share it with the organisers.

Let's Talk About

When: Every 3rd Sunday of the month 15:00-17:00 (if desired 15 minute break 16:00-16:15) About the Event: Let’s talk about things we don’t often talk about and share what we think. Certainly some of the things each of us practices to develop ourselves, to find God, to find the meaning of life or to become a better human being, I rarely talk about and I rarely hear other people talk about. However I think (hope) that we can learn from each other by sharing what is going on inside ourselves. Discussion groups like this can get bogged down by (dis)agreements or by people exclusively wanting to talk about what they believe in (as if they are trying to convince others that they should believe the same). I would like us to be disciplined in our talking AND listening. A few guidelines might help to create a respectful, open and relaxed space. Suggested guidelines and practicalities: At the start of each meeting the guidelines are to be considered, modified (if desired) and adopted for the meeting. Confidentiality: Whatever is talked about in the meeting is totally confidential and will not be discussed outside the meeting (also not in the break), not even with people who were present at the time. Confidentiality gives me the freedom to talk about things that I may not want to talk about outside this kind of meetings. Only one person speaks at a time: Optional: the person who is speaking can invite brief comments or answer short questions. Silence between speakers (1-5 minutes).
