Sarah Bax Horton: Arm of Eve – Investigating the Thames Torso Murders

Sarah Bax Horton : GUEST SPEAKER EVENT We are delighted to welcome award-winning local author and researcher Sarah Bax Horton to the Club for an intriguing evening exploring one of Victorian London's most chilling unsolved mysteries. While Jack the Ripper remains the most famous unidentified killer of the nineteenth century, another serial murderer stalked London before him. Known as the Thames Torso Killer, this elusive figure murdered and dismembered at least four victims between 1887 and 1889, leaving investigators baffled and the public horrified. Drawing on the research behind her acclaimed book Arm of Eve: Investigating the Thames Torso Murders , Sarah will discuss how she applied modern criminal profiling techniques to a Victorian cold case, leading her to identify a compelling suspect — a known criminal with intimate knowledge of the River Thames and its waterways. The talk will also include fascinating behind-the-scenes insights into Sarah's involvement in the BBC documentary series Lucy Worsley's Victorian Murder Club , which recently brought renewed attention to the case. Following the talk, there will be an opportunity for questions before a book signing and an informal Club Supper with the speaker. Tickets Members: £15 Guests: £20 Tickets include a glass of wine on arrival . A two-course Club Supper will be available after the talk for £22.50 per person .

Synthetic Sincerity: Preview Screening + Director Q&A

7pm-9pm, £16.50, in building // Marc Isaacs (The Filmmaker’s House) made a deal with The Synthetic Sincerity Lab, an AI research project affiliated with the University of Southern England. There, researchers are investigating the possibility of teaching AI characters authenticity, using characters from Isaacs’ documentaries to do so. In return, they allow Isaacs to film the process. An AI avatar, created in collaboration with Romanian actress Illinca Manolache (seen in Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World by Radu Jude) guides him through this complex research world and sternly instructs him how to behave there. Isaacs films the work of the rebellious AI researcher Lynn, and follows an Uyghur chef who puts himself forward as a subject of study. Can this chef, in AI form, put into words what he is unable to express as a human being? Isaacs’ innovative narrative gradually blurs the line between fact and fiction. Synthetic Sincerity explores the relationship between humans and machines through a blend of documentary, fictional scenes, and gently absurd humor. How does the development of AI influence the way we look at human faces? And how might this technology affect cinema in the future?
