'Italy from Seed to Plate': A Talk with Paolo Arrigo

How much of a country’s history is preserved not in its monuments, but in its soil? This afternoon session explores the distinct microclimates, dialects, and culinary traditions that define Italy’s 20 regions. Led by leading gardening expert and renowned seedsman, Paolo Arrigo, the 45-minute talk takes the audience “around Italy in 20 vegetables,” focusing on local, ethical, and endangered heirloom varieties celebrated for their exceptional provenance and forgotten flavours. Alongside this regional journey, Paolo will share practical advice on exactly what to sow right now to secure a successful autumn and winter harvest. The session concludes with a Q&A. Paolo is a nine-time Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) medal winner, the Slow Food (UK) ‘Person of the Year 2019′, and the founder of Seeds of Italy. His company imports Franchi Seeds, the oldest family-run seed brand on the planet. Remaining in the same family for seven generations, Franchi was established in 1783 – the same year Mozart composed his first mass, the Montgolfier brothers launched their hot air balloon over Paris, and the HMS Bounty was still sitting in the dockyards. Summer School, 2001 + Q&A with director Dužan Duong

Fresh from its acclaimed UK premiere at the Raindance Film Festival, Summer School, 2001 launches its UK distribution with a special screening and Q&A with writer-director Dužan Duong. Set during a sweltering summer in West Bohemia, the film follows Kiên, a teenager returning home after years in Vietnam, separated from his family and younger brother who remained in Czechia. Faced with a distant father, a mother trying to heal old wounds, and a brother unsure where he belongs, Kiên struggles to reconnect. When a sudden accident shakes the family, long-buried tensions rise to the surface. Drawing on his own upbringing, Dužan Duong crafts a tender and deeply personal portrait of a Vietnamese-Czech family, exploring identity, displacement, and belonging with warmth, humour, and emotional honesty. As I Said: Meet the Artists & Curators Talk

This ‘Meet the Curators & Artists’ talk is part of One Word’s As I Said exhibition, showing in the Poetry Café 31 July – 13 August. Join us for this relaxed standing talk and exhibition walk-through with both the curators and several exhibiting As I Said artists. Come along to find out what ‘artwork shaped by poetry and poetry shaped by artwork’ means in practice. As I Said’s programme brought together six emerging artists from Grafters Collective and fifteen emerging poets from a wide range of backgrounds, many of whom were trying poetry for the first time. Programme curators Lio and Karl will talk more about the rationale of the project while the artists will speak on their process and project outcomes. There will be a chance for attendees to ask questions as we go. Please aim to arrive at the start of the event. There are 25 tickets available. There is seating available for those who need it, a lift between floors and accessible toilets. Please note: this event is suitable for over-18s only due to the exhibition’s occasional adult themes and language. As well as this talk, there are three free participatory workshops you can take part in, and a performance event where the featured poets will read their work. All events in this series take place at The Poetry Café, London. You can choose to attend just one event or several.
