Drink, Death & Debauchery Walking Tour

This guided walking tour takes in the colourful history of London’s West End around St Giles, Seven Dials and Covent Garden. Learn about the notorious gin craze of the 18th century, the history behind William Hogarth’s famous Gin Lane, gallows, plague pits and prostitution. Meet at the Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road to be guided from Denmark Street to Holborn, ending at the Foundling Museum where you can see some more famous Hogarth paintings.

Assemblage Collective: Cyanotype Token Workshop

Discover the art of cyanotype printing in this creative workshop for young adults. Guided by artist Florence Bennett, you will experiment with cyanotype processes through collaging found objects to create A5 prints. Then, once you are familiar with the technique, you will work with images of tokens from the Foundling Museum’s collection to create small brooches, reflecting on the sentimental and precious nature of the objects.

Meet the Experts: Dr Janette Bright on the Foundling Tokens (In Person)

Why are an old bent coin, a piece of ribbon and a hazelnut amongst the most treasured items in the Foundling Museum’s Collection? In this talk, you can learn why such items were so important in the mid-eighteenth-century Foundling Hospital when a child was admitted and why their use as identifiers declined as the century went on. You will discover how and why the tokens had to be hidden and who had access to their secrets, and how many tell us not just about individuals but about life in general at this time. The talk will also reveal the individual stories behind some foundling tokens and why some stories will always be unknown.
