Fragments From the Horse Who Knows History

‘this is the imprint of the horse who knows history seeking the archaeology of our own understanding’ Rose English. Rosita Clavel – a horse opera libretto text (1997) Rose English narrates the horse in words and pictures from both her work and the work of Leonora Carrington. As in all good tales, surprising people, places and things shimmer together across time and space, and meaning is suddenly made, however briefly. Rose will share elements from her own archive and attend to Carrington’s, tracing histories of horse legends from the cavalry to Country Life, from Bucephalus to bridles. Sitting in Maresfield Gardens, in the embrace of Freud’s own collection of antiquities, Rose opens up an underworld channel to enable Epona’s Wise Mares to converse with Carrington’s Steeds. With music by Ian Hill. The performance will be followed by drinks in the garden. This performance is curated by Han Lu Tao, Sarah Vidalin, Cecilia Brandon-Cross and Ana Karime Sierra as part of The Courtauld’s MA Curating programme. _______________________________________________________________________ Bio: Rose English emerged from the Conceptual art, dance and feminist scenes of 1970’s Britain to become one of the most influential performance artists working today. Her uniquely interdisciplinary work combines elements of theatre, circus, opera and poetry to explore themes of gender politics, the identity of the performer and the metaphysics of presence.

© Gisele Sperb, Reviramento nº 1, 2024.

IN-HOUSE – The Only Cure: Book Launch with Mark Solms

This ticket is for IN-HOUSE access to this event. ________________________________________________________________________ In this special evening event, we celebrate the recent publication of Mark Solms’ newest book ‘The Only Cure: Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Healing’, in which a pioneering neuropsychologist reveals how science is proving Freud correct and explores what this might mean for our mental healthcare systems and our lives. Join us for a lecture delivered by Mark Solms on his book and research, as he traces the emerging scientific evidence that supports Freud’s core insights into the mind. The lecture will be followed by an audience Q&A, offering the chance to explore the implications of his work for psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and contemporary approaches to mental health. This event offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the leading figures bridging neuroscience and psychoanalytic thought. Please click here if you would like to purchase an online ticket. ________________________________________________________________________ About the book Once dismissed as unscientific, psychoanalytic therapy is proving to be among our most effective medical treatments of any kind – outperforming psychiatric drugs and rivalling vaccines in its power to prevent and heal. Why does it work so well? Perhaps because one of the most controversial figures in psychology was right all along.

Freud and Hamlet: Acoustic Encounters

Freud and Hamlet: Acoustic Encounters

A special theatre workshop, organised by The Freud Museum in partnership with Bournemouth University’s Centre for the Study of Conflict, Emotion and Social Justice (CESJ), and The Faction. Doors open at 5:30pm. Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet has been a source of inspiration for centuries of writers and thinkers, ever since it was first performance in 1600. Key to its success is the enigma surrounding the inability of the eponymous character to act on his intentions by taking revenge on his uncle Claudius for the murder of his father. For Freud, the play was a ‘Renaissance Oedipus Rex’, and Hamlet’s inhibition against taking action was not due to his philosophical frame of mind (being ‘sickled o’eer the pale of thought’), but rather his horror in seeing his own oedipal fantasies fulfilled. In this special theatre workshop, we will explore what the play might say to us today, both in relation to psychoanalysis and wider culture. Scenes from the play will be performed by actors from The Faction, under the direction of Mark Leipacher, and discussed in an open workshop format, facilitated by a Candida Yates, Roman Geridomos and Eva Makri. We will explore themes including the role of the soliloquay and it’s relation to transference in psychoanalysis, surveillance and paranoia. Audience members will be encouraged to participate in the discussion and shape the interpretation of selected scenes from the play.

IN-HOUSE – On Resisting Women: Book Launch with Michaela Chamberlain

This ticket is for IN-HOUSE access to this event. ________________________________________________________________________ The Freud Museum London is delighted to host this evening event to mark the publication of Michaela Chamberlain’s latest book On Resisting Women. Michaela Chamberlain will be joined by Juliet Rosenfeld to discuss her book and talk through its themes, discussing how individuals become misogynists and how unacknowledged misogyny infiltrates everyday life. Michaela and Juliet’s discussion will blend psychoanalytic theory with personal, clinical, and cultural insights on misogyny to help us move beyond analysis to action, calling for awareness and change. Please click here if you would like to purchase an online ticket. ________________________________________________________________________ About the book Building on her first book, Misogyny in Psychoanalysis, and drawing on her experiences as a psychotherapist, mother, and researcher, Michaela Chamberlain uses psychoanalytic theory to examine what causes misogyny and how misogyny is internalised, enacted, and justified. Revisiting Freud’s case of Dora and Winnicott’s concept of the “good enough mother”, she explores how these foundational psychoanalytic ideas continue to echo in contemporary expectations placed on women– particularly around sexuality, care, and emotional labour.
