Despite widespread interest in our Care Manifesto, since its publication we have seen not a growing embrace of the politics of care, but, rather, an intensification in the politics of carelessness and cruelty. Indeed, over the past half decade, the world has witnessed continued warfare, mass human destruction, the amassing of ever more obscene wealth by the few, ongoing austerity, and ‘care-stripping’. Yet even in these times of despair, there is also evidence of increased grassroots resistance and support for better lives for all, as seen, for example, in the popularity of Mamdani in New York and Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico. In these harsh times, we return to the premises of The Care Manifesto and ask how we can collectively strengthen our notions and practices of care? We argue that placing care front and centre of our politics is even more urgent today than it was when the first edition of the manifesto was published six years ago.
