Ceildh with Bald Mountain String Band in Aid of St Mary's Church

This ceilidh is supporting St Mary’s church in Threlkeld which has been at the centre of village life for many centuries. It was last refurbished 250 years ago. We want to celebrate this in style! However, now the church needs to be repaired and refreshed for the next couple of hundred years. We seek for the church to continue traditional and enlivened Christian worship eg. Messy church or dramatisations but also to be able to provide warmth and better hospitality to those using the church eg. School activities, mums and babies and social groups for older people and those living with difficulties . We are undertaking repairs and installing a new heating system (air source heat pump for sustainability) and insulation. There will also be provision of a toilet and kitchen and the removal of the centre pews to give a flexible space for activities. The profits from this ceilidh will go towards this project. Bald Mountain String Band started in the 60s as the Berkshire Tragedy, Peter and Chris, along with concertina and melodeon player, and clog dancer, Ian Dunmur, played together until Chris and Peter moved to the Lakes in 1987. They are now a family band, joined by daughter Jo and her husband Mick. Hence, Bald Mountain String Band was born.

Their diverse portfolio includes high-profile performances at concerts, weddings, corporate events, and as sought-after session musicians in recording studios. The quartet is also a popular choice for supporting strings on UK artist tours, showcasing their adaptability and wide-ranging expertise. Notable recent performances include a prominent appearance at the AO Arena in Manchester for BBC One’s Big Night of Musicals 2025, a National Lottery Funded event, where they performed alongside a full orchestra to great acclaim. With a repertoire that spans both classical and contemporary genres, the Northern String Quartet remains at the forefront of the UK’s vibrant music scene, consistently delivering exceptional performances and contributing to the development of both live and recorded music. Illustrated Talk: Penrith2Kendal Arc Recovery Project

In May 2024, the Penrith2Kendal Arc project started its two-year development phase, providing staff resource to work up ambitious plans for land management, community engagement, access improvement, monitoring, funding and governance. These plans will be implemented over a 20-year delivery phase, which should commence Early 2027. During this development phase, managed through a partnership with Lowther Farming Partnership and Cumbria Connect , the project team is working with all 30+ farmers and landowners to explore options for large-scale, ambitious nature restoration that will enhance the condition and connectivity of a range of important habitats, including woodlands, wood pasture, rivers and floodplains, hay meadows and peatlands. Planning and consultation will also be carried out to assess whether Water Voles, Black Grouse, Pine Martens and a range of other missing species can be returned to the landscape. Covering more than 16,000 hectares, the Penrith to Kendal Arc project area covers multiple watersheds and habitats and supports a huge array of wildlife. Most of the project lies within the Lake District National Park, arguably England’s most spectacular and iconic landscape. Mikron Theatre Company in their 54th year of touring exceptional theatre in extraordinary places. They visit over 130 venues per year. Snake Davis Band

He is one of the most in-demand saxophone players in the world, widely known for his solos on tracks such as Lisa Stansfield’s “Change”, M-People’s “Search For A Hero” and “Moving On Up”, Klingande’s ‘Jubel’ and Take That’s “A Million Love Songs”. He has played and recorded with artists ranging from James Brown to Tina Turner to Paul McCartney, The Eurythmics to Amy Winehouse. As a session player to the stars he plays arenas and stadiums, but his greatest love is to play intimate venues as himself, his own music choice with his favourite musicians. Playing the saxophone family as well as flutes, whistles and the ancient Japanese wind instrument, the Shakuhachi, and vocals, it is his total passion and commitment to every note that draws people in. The Snake David band appears in Threlkeld Village Hall on Saturday 24th October 2026 at 8pm. Craft Fair 2026

This popular Craft Fair has more stalls than ever. It’s a great opportunity for local crafts persons to display and sell their wares. We expect crafters and artists from Cumbria to be selling a wide range of quality items, likely to include hand woven textiles, knitting, leatherwork, willow-work, woodturning, hand-made jewellery, watercolour and oil paintings, ceramics, glass-works, paper craft, soaps, candles and cards. It’s a great way to see a variety of local talent and to start your Christmas shopping. The Craft Fair will be in Threlkeld Village Hall and the nearby School Hall from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 22nd November 2026. Entry is free of charge. Refreshments and lunches will be available throughout the day in the village hall coffee shop. Plus refreshments will be available in the school courtesy of the Friends of Threlkeld School. The Churchfitters - "Christmas Cracker"

The Churchfitters produce heart-wrenching vocals, foot-stompingly fast fiddle mixed with infectious funk-rock rhythms, plus traditional tunes reinvigorated with mesmerising jazz sax. Throw in some exquisite harmonies, a slew of startlingly original songs and a few jokes that create instant rapport and you’ve got a high energy show that always leaves audiences cheering. How do you adequately describe such a musically diverse, uplifting band? You leave it to Mike Harding, a self-confessed ‘huge, huge fan’. He calls their music ‘totally brilliant and beautiful’, while Dave Pegg says they are “The most musically inventive group I’ve seen in decades”. ‘Like Annie Lennox in full flow’ (Fab Nights Productions) – Londoner Rosie Short’s achingly beautiful voice is equally at home singing husky blues, plaintive femme folk or ethereal originals. A talented songwriter, she’s also a ‘one woman orchestra’, deftly swapping between flute, saxophone, banjo, tin whistle, dulcimer, ukulele and any number of things you can shake, rattle, or whack with a stick. Rosie’s brother Chris is a feverishly fast fiddler who has the annoying habit of getting people, who were sitting quite comfortably, out of their seats and dancing. When required, he also plays slowly and most of the other speeds. A mean mandolin player, he sings great vocal harmonies too.
