Celebrating Cowslip Sunday in Lambley Village

As part of our May Day celebrations, on Sunday 3rd May,  a team from the Framework Knitters Museum will be based in Lambley Village Hall celebrating the lost springtime tradition of Cowslip Sunday. Lambley, just 6 miles north of Nottingham, was one of the prime sites for framework knitting during the nineteenth century. This was also the time when Cowslip Sunday was celebrated by the local stockingers and their families. Lambley Village Hall (sharing its site with Lambley Primary School) is located on Catfoot Lane, opposite The Lambley pub.

Celebrating May Day at the Framework Knitters Museum

Come and join us at the Framework Knitters Museum on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May for a host of FREE events to celebrate May Day. No need to book, just turn up on the day from 11am. Last entry will a focus on nature and springtime, we will have a day of music, crafts, dance, puppetry, and storytelling, as well as free entry to the Museum* Events include: Help us to finally create our special knitted Green Man and leave a special thought or message for them for the future. Music performances in the Summer House from Chris Morris, Ajar and Higgs Bo’sun. Family , 1.30pm & 2.30pm in our Victorian parlour. Walkabout puppetry performances in Ruddington and the Museum. ‘The Cog in the Machine’ K-Pop Dance performances from Nottingham Trent University in our café courtyard at 12pm and 1pm. Craft demos from the Notts Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers Free entry to the Museum* Plus our Parker’s Yard cafe and garden will be open to serve delicious drinks, soup, sandwiches and cakes from 10am. We’re now hoping that our May Day celebrations will become an annual fixture at the Museum and so we look forward to seeing you. *Please note that due to activities taking place during the day, not all areas of the Museum will be open. Whilst all events are free, as a small museum site we reserve the right to restrict entrance on the day if the numbers become too large and unmanageable.

Framework Music Night: An Audience Without Jake Thackray

An Audience without Jake Thackray celebrates the life, songs and wonderful wordsmithery of the great Yorkshire chansonnier, Jake Thackray, a unique talent, whose songs are full of poetry, wit, irreverence and humanity. He became known to millions through his regular appearances in the 1960s and 1970s on programmes such as Braden’s Week and That’s Life. Since his death in 2002 there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work, with admirers including Ralph McTell, Jarvis Cocker, Alex Turner, Don Black, Thea Gilmore, and Cerys Matthews. John Watterson is the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention, as well as performing at Latitude, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe, plus numerous radio appearances. John’s show will include many Jake classics (Sister Josephine, On Again On Again, The Bantam Cock and others), anecdotes from John’s research into Jake’s life for the recently published biography as well as some of the ‘lost’ Thackray songs John has rediscovered and recorded on his CD, The Lost Will and Testament of Jake Thackray.
