The Orb ft Lee Harris / Dom Beken (Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets) present Metallic Spheres. A world premiere brought to you by Floyd in Folkestone 2026. “On The Run - The Floyd Collective”, founders and curators of the annual "Floyd in Folkestone” Festival, have announced an extraordinary Opening Night for their 2026 programme, with Lee Harris and Dom Beken of Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets joining The Orb to perform Metallic Spheres LIVE - for the first time ever on Friday 28 August 2026. Originally released in 2010 with a second chapter released in 2024, Metallic Spheres was a landmark collaboration between The Orb and David Gilmour, blending ambient electronics with the unmistakable tones and textures of this legendary guitarist. Until now, the album has never been performed live in full. For this world-first performance, The Orb will be joined by Lee Harris (guitarist and co-founder of Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets) and Dom Beken (BAFTA nominated composer, multi-instrumentalist, Saucers’ keyboardist and former Orb member), creating a powerful bridge between Floyd’s psychedelic heritage and The Orb’s pioneering electronic soundscapes. The performance will open Floyd in Folkestone 2026, setting the tone for the world’s only annual festival that celebrates the legacy and alumni of this iconic band. This unique live debut promises a deeply immersive, cinematic and emotional experience - one that fans of Floyd, The Orb and experimental rock will not want to miss.

Tontine Folk Festival

Tontine Folk Festival is here to celebrate the generations of folk music that defined our listening whilst curating a new wave of artists who will go on to do great things! This festival will be hosted in the gorgeous seaside town of Folkestone by the harbour! Over 30 acts will perform across 4 stages all on Tontine street. At 6pm all stages will close except for the Quarterhouse where the final acts will perform to everyone. This will be Amelia Coburn, Martin Simpson and to finish with it’ll be Jon Boden of Bellowhead. Tickets are expected to go fast for this event so get them while you still can!

Folkestone is a Library: Book Lovers' Quiz

ONE BOOKING IS FOR A TEAM OF 6 Join us for the first Folkestone is a Library Book Lovers Quiz Night to celebrate World Book Club Day at The Grand. Doors open at 6pm, with proceedings starting at 6.30pm and finishing around 9pm. This is a literary evening that will challenge not only your knowledge but also your creativity. Your host is the great Tim Gould of Folkestone's own Objectables. Having had several brushes with live music comparing, the odd TV appearance, and even officiating a couple of wedding ceremonies, Tim has discovered his most natural public speaking environment: quiz hosting. While he freely admits to knowing very little about literature, he can read—so with any luck, between now and the big night, he’ll have finished a few books and will be fully prepared to test you mercilessly on words and stuff. Teams may consist of up to 6 people. There is a pay bar that will be open; feel free to arrive with your choice of table snacks. VENUE INFORMATION This event takes place at The Grand, The Leas, Folkestone, CT20 2XL. Entry is via the North Entrance (Metropole Road East). Prizes: More than just team bragging rights, you can win tickets to book festival talks and book vouchers for local bookstores.

Exhibition on Screen - James McNeill Whistler

In an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. He found a parallel between painting and music, and entitled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies" and "nocturnes", emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work. His most famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), commonly known as Whistler's Mother, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history and this film will unveil the artist behind the art. Tate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. This blockbuster exhibition promises to reawaken the world to just how important Whistler is to art history, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. Exhibition on Screen will bring these stunning works and the incredible story behind them to cinemas around the world while the exhibition is still running, bringing this truly global artist to a global audience.

Folkestone is a Library Meet the Author: A Home Education Event. Ann Morgan

Meet Ann, and her how she read a Book from Every Country. Ann Morgan is an author and speaker based in Folkestone. Her first book, Reading the World, came out of a 2012 project to read a book from every country in a year (ayearofreadingtheworld.com). How I Read a Book from Every Country' is a 45-minute, interactive presentation that tells the story of my journey through a book from every nation and the amazing people who helped me achieve my goal. Exploring issues such as how many countries there are, what it means to translate a book and how storytelling can bring us together, this event will enlarge students' worlds and imaginations, and get them fizzing with questions. Suitable for ages 6 upwards. Following media coverage in more than 40 nations and a TED talk, the project became a lifelong endeavour. This sees Ann continuing to blog about international literature, and corresponding and collaborating with writers, readers and literary organisations around the world to champion the sharing of stories. Ann is also the author of two novels, international bestseller Beside Myself and Crossing Over. Her latest non-fiction book, Relearning to Read: Adventures in Not-Knowing (Renard Press, 2025), celebrates how embracing the things we don't understand can help us read ourselves and our world better.
