Have a Stab at Needlefelt - Dogs

Have a stab at this – needle felt your own dog! (Or someone else's dog if you like). Dogs come in such a variety of shapes and sizes and we've made lots here over the past few years. Both long and short haired. Needle felting is a fascinating technique which allows you to sculpt carded wool into three-dimensional objects. It lends itself very well to animal sculpture as the results are soft and tactile. In this one day class you will learn about the different needles and fibres that you will be using, how to put together a basic armature, see how the wool and needles work to shape the animal and use those skills to make your own needle felted dog using wire, locally sourced fleece, coloured wool and beads. Please be aware that felting needles are very sharp. Tools and materials will be provided. All you need to bring with you are lots of photos of your dog! Please note there is a £10 material charge payable on the day.

Feltmaking - Crossbody Bag with Leather or Webbing Straps

Join Louise in the magical process of wetfelting to make a crossbody messenger bag inspired by the landscape. Using a variety of fibres you will create a bag with a long flap which you will decorate with wool and exotic fibres to create your pattern. You will then apply your own energy to turn the fibres into felt. Your bag can then be completed by adding a handmade leather (or webbing if you prefer) strap and a magnetic clasp. Bring sharp scissors, hand towel and bath towel, sewing needle and strong thread (grey) and a goodly amount of elbow grease. Please note there will be a £15 material charge (Webbing Straps) or £18 (Leather Straps) payable on the day. Pewtersmithing Using a Rolling Mill - Jewellery

Join Ella to create your own pewter jewellery such as earrings, bangles, pendants and brooches (approx 3-4 finished items). Using lead free pewter we will apply texture and pattern to the metal using a traditional jewellers rolling mill - a tactile and addictive process. Please feel free to bring along any textures under 5mm in thickness to try. Items such as lace, dried leaves/flowers (green fresh flowers and leaves don't work), paper stencils or mesh packaging. Ella will also have a lot for you to use if you don't bring any. We will then design and shape the pewter using traditional jewellery techniques such as piercing, doming, hammering and soldering before finishing our designs to take home. Fabric Quilling Mats

Create Colourful, Textured Mats Using Rolled Fabric Techniques In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to make fabric quilling mats - vibrant, textural pieces created by rolling and stitching lengths of fabric into beautiful patterns and shapes. Using a variety of fabric strips, you'll explore how to roll, coil, and arrange them into functional and decorative mats, with the option to add felt balls and other elements for extra texture and colour. You'll also learn different stitching techniques to securely join the pieces and experiment with colour themes or neutral tones, layout and composition to make your mat uniquely your own. This is a relaxed and creative workshop suitable for all skill levels. No previous sewing or quilling experience required. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring any favourite medium or heavyweight fabric scraps such as flat felts, wool based or tartan weaves you'd like to include.

Mosaic on Slate

Join expert tutor Ruth Wilkinson to learn the basic techniques in mosaic creation. This course is designed for complete beginners or those with a little more experience. You will learn the basic direct method of mosaic and have a completed piece to take home. The mosaics will be suitable for both interior and exterior. The first hour will be spent deciding on and transferring your design onto the slate provided - the difficult bit will be choosing your colour palette from the many tesserae available! Then our expert tutor Ruth Wilkinson will take you through the cutting techniques before you begin your creation. Once the mosaic is complete you will then grout the pieces ready to take home. A great opportunity to learn the basics to then use in your future projects.

Blacksmithing -Swallow Sculptures

Forge your own gorgeous swallow sculpture on this hands-on day whether you are new to blacksmithing or want to try your hand at something different. Blacksmith/sculptor Adrian Wood brings forges and anvils and you will go home with a bespoke swallow sculpture for your garden. During the day you will: – Understand the properties of the metals you will be forging – Handle the tools and equipment correctly – Learn how to work safely with fire and hot metal – Make a swallow sculpture All materials are included in the price of the course. Please note that the day is fairly strenuous. There is a lot of thick metal and hammering! If you have any fitness or health issues please let us know. Sculptured Clay Heads

In this workshop led by ceramist kay Latto you will learn to sculpt a small head - human, animal or mythical - in clay, approximately 15/20 cm using a variety of sculpting tools. Please bring printed photographs/pictures of your subject as a point of reference, particularly if you wish to produce a portrait bust, where you will require photographs, in the same pose, taken from the front, back and sides. By the end of the day you will have created your very own clay head which, after approximately six to eight weeks – allowing for drying and kiln firing – will be ready for collection. During the workshop, various finishing techniques will be discussed for you to materials and firing costs are included.

Curlews, Coots & Cormorants in Collagraph

On this beginners two-day workshop, printmaker, Hester Cox will reveal just why collagraph will always be her favourite method of printmaking and hopefully you'll be hooked too. Using birds, real or imagined, as your inspiration, the first day will be spent exploring collage, cutting and painting techniques to create textural printing plates that are often as lovely as the prints. On the second day you will print your birds - both in monochrome and colour. You will discover what papers work best to print on, how to prepare them for printing and how to use pressure to get the best detail. You will be given lots of one-to-one guidance and encouragement and there will be numerous samples on hand to get your ideas flowing. Capturing landscapes in pastels - En plein air

Are you looking to work en plein air with your pastels? Join talented pastel artist Jo Garlick for this workshop and learn more about how to successfully use pastels outdoors. On this course you will get the opportunity to work en plein air at a local venue. You will learn about what to carry with you and the different ways you could use your pastels outdoors. This course is designed for people with some pastel painting experience, however, it is not essential. You will learn about composition, mark making and drawing techniques and how to create interesting and expressive landscape paintings. The location chosen is Druid's Temple, on the Swinton Estate, a few miles from ArtisOn. We will meet at the location and spend the first 4 hours onsite (including having our 2 course lunch), before heading to ArtisOn for afternoon cake, to make the finishing touches to our work and review our successes! ***Please note***There is a car park at the location and participants will need to pay the £4 parking fee on arrival. Please also be aware that there will be a short walk to the place we will be working. You will need to make sure you can carry all of you materials, etc. If the weather is against us there is shelter on site that we can use (barns/event tipi). Mosaic stone

Create your very own mosaic stone for your home or garden. Mosaic stones are perfect to use as a doorstop or to add a little extra colour to the garden or outside area. Under the expert tutelage of Ruth Wilkinson, you'll spend the first hour of the workshop deciding on your design and transferring it onto your stone, this will then be followed by demonstrations and a chance to practice using the cutting tools for the tesserae before you begin creating. There will be lots materials to choose from to create your design and lots of inspiration from books and stencils.The stones will be provided as they need to be a specific shape and size. Stained Glass- Copper foil Sun

Everyone loves stained glass and the gorgeous effect of the light streaming through it. Well imagine being able to make your own gorgeous glass decorations to hang at the window or in front of a light source. This one day copper foil stained glass workshop will introduce you to the art of making stained glass using the copper foil method. Your subject will be suns or sunflowers - perfect for July! During this one day workshop you will make a small selection of copper foil decorations. You will learn to cut glass, foil and solder them, and finish them off ready for hanging in the window or even outside on a tree! ***Lead-based solder will be used - this creates toxic fumes and pregnant women are advised not to handle lead or breathe in fumes.*** Please note there is a £20 material charge payable on the day. Woodcut and Chine-Collé

This one-day workshop introduces participants to the art of woodcut printmaking combined with the technique of chine-collé – using coloured papers during the printing process to create either a subtle effect or strong splash of colour. Led by experienced Printmaker Joanna Bourne, students will transfer their image onto the block and learn to safely use a range of carving tools, exploring mark-making and creating texture in their design. Once the block has been cut, it will be inked in a choice of colours using rollers, with extra colour and subtle detail added to the print by incorporating thin papers during the printing process. Blocks will be printed with the use of a baren or wooden spoon, a technique which adds opportunity for a free, creative style of printing. By the end of the day, each student will have created a small edition of prints and gained the confidence to continue exploring relief materials will be provided, with a cost of £15 payable on the day.

A Day of Enameling

Come and spend your day trying out the beautiful art of enameling with local enamel artist Heather Croft. Whether you have previous experience or if this is your first time, all are welcome. Work with recycled copper and vitreous enamel (ground glass) and watch the magic unfold when fired in the kiln. You will be shown how to use decals, scrafitto techniques, glass stringers and or millie fiore, silver leaf and silver foil, lustres and stencils to create your own unique pieces. So many techniques to choose from! You will make at least 5 pieces over the course of the day. These can be panels of 3" x 3", earrings, a ring bowl, pendants or a keyring. Everything you make you can take away on the day. Please note that there is a £30 material charge payable on the day.

Introduction to Free Machine Embroidery

Learn how to use your sewing machine for free machine embroidery - drawing with your sewing machine - in this inspiring workshop. This class is suitable for complete beginners, who would love to know how to use their sewing machine more as a drawing tool. During the workshop you’ll learn how to set up your machine for free machine embroidery, how to select the right fabric and threads for your desired outcome. By the end of the workshop not only will you feel more confident in using your sewing machine for free machine embroidery, you will have created some simple designs, explored both raw and smooth edge applique as well as learning granite stitch and how to write with your sewing machine. The afternoon will be spent putting your new skills into practice and creating your own unique piece of free motion embroidery. Whilst suitable for beginners, please know how to drop or cover the feed dogs, thread your machine and fill the bobbin prior to participating. Almost every machine is suitable for free machine embroidery, if you are not sure then do get in touch. Have you ever wished to sit and sketch outdoors but don't know where to start or wish to have some pointers on how to create beautifully illustrated pages? Then this introductory course is for you. Imagine illustrating a page that could record the seasons and includes recipes, poems, verses and more - a family heirloom! Join artist Wendi New to learn illustration techniques and develop your own page designs for nature journalling. The day will start with you getting a feel for page layout, composition and calligraphic skills using mixed media. There will be demonstrations, discussion and experimenting to create pages that will be included in your own journal. Over the day you will take a few trips outdoors to sketch in nature, using different surfaces and materials (shown in each demonstration). We will record the local area with annotated illustrated pages. Using different illustration styles for each page you will work with inks, pencil crayon, charcoal, pastels and also watercolours. This course will fill you full of ideas and a passion for nature art journaling. Pyrography - Burning Designs on Wood

Pyrography is the art of decorating wood by burning designs onto the wood. Join Bob who will be able to inspire you to create your own burnt wood designs. Bob will be able to give you some background on the history of Pyrography and will demonstrate various techniques along with the correct and safe use of the tools. You will begin by starting with simple shapes, working on things such as small plaques, coasters and key fobs. As your skills develop, you will be able to tackle a more complex project. Take your pick from Bob's collection of wooden objects allowing you to work work bigger on items such as a bread or cheese board, or a bowl. During the workshop you will learn: • How to use pyrography tools • What wood is best to use for pyrography • How to design for burning on wood • How to add colour using felt pens, acrylics and colour washes if required Please note there is a £6 materials charge payable on the day which covers all the practice blanks. In addition the options available for your more ambitious project include items such as bowls and bread boards and these are individually priced between £2-£8 depending on your selection. If you are into woodturning can bring bowls or platters of your own to decorate, the best quality wood to use would be Beech or Sycamore.
