From Threads to Sweatshirts: Overlocker

Join Katie Davis for this hands-on, 1-day workshop designed to help you confidently use your overlocker and make the most of its capabilities. Whether you’re new to overlocking or need a refresher, this is the ideal opportunity to get to know your machine. You'll be using Katie's very own pattern, the 'Lemon Squeezy Top' - a perfect way to test your overlocking skills. It can be made with capped, short, or long sleeves, or even extended into a dress! (Though to manage expectations, a dress may not be completed in the allotted time.) In the morning you will get to know your overlocker and prepare your pattern. Learning the basics ( threading, tension settings and maintenance). Then in the afternoon you will assemble your garment, using your overlocker to sew seams and put your garment together. You'll have time to troubleshoot any issues and refine your skills with hands-on guidance. Everyone will leave with the knowledge and confidence to tackle more projects at home! Pyrography - Burning Designs on Wood

Pyrography is the art of decorating wood by burning designs onto the wood. Join Bob who will be able to inspire you to create your own burnt wood designs. Bob will be able to give you some background on the history of Pyrography and will demonstrate various techniques along with the correct and safe use of the tools. You will begin by starting with simple shapes, working on things such as small plaques, coasters and key fobs. As your skills develop, you will be able to tackle a more complex project. Take your pick from Bob's collection of wooden objects allowing you to work work bigger on items such as a bread or cheese board, or a bowl. During the workshop you will learn: • How to use pyrography tools • What wood is best to use for pyrography • How to design for burning on wood • How to add colour using felt pens, acrylics and colour washes if required Please note there is a £6 materials charge payable on the day which covers all the practice blanks. In addition the options available for your more ambitious project include items such as bowls and bread boards and these are individually priced between £2-£8 depending on your selection. If you are into woodturning can bring bowls or platters of your own to decorate, the best quality wood to use would be Beech or Sycamore. Blacksmithing - Sculptural Flowers for the Garden

Forge your own gorgeous gifts on this hands-on day whether you are new to blacksmithing or want to try your hand at something different. Blacksmith/sculptor Adrian Wood brings forges and anvils and you will go home with several stunning creations from your day. Places on this workshop are limited. Mosaic on Slate

Join expert tutor Ruth Wilkinson to learn the basic techniques in mosaic creation. This course is designed for complete beginners or those with a little more experience. You will learn the basic direct method of mosaic and have a completed piece to take home. The mosaics will be suitable for both interior and exterior. The first hour will be spent deciding on and transferring your design onto the slate provided - the difficult bit will be choosing your colour palette from the many tesserae available! Then our expert tutor Ruth Wilkinson will take you through the cutting techniques before you begin your creation. Once the mosaic is complete you will then grout the pieces ready to take home. A great opportunity to learn the basics to then use in your future projects.

Kiln-Fired Silver Rings from Precious Metal Clay

This workshop is both suitable for those new to using silver clay or those looking for a great next step as you learn skills for making a silver ring. You will make one ring in this Kiln fired ring workshop. We will use silver clay to create a unique ring; learn how to measure your ring size for silver clay, texture the clay, fire and polish it. You will make the ring to your own unique design and will also be able to embellish your ring. There will be a selection of Cubic Zirconia available for you embellish your ring, as well as molds and lots of tips and techniques. You will learn how to: - Construct a ring to a chosen size - Embellish your ring and create texture - If you wish, add a fireable stone - After firing you will learn how to polish and finish your piece Please note there is a £35 material charge payable on the day. The materials charge covers 10g of Silver Art Clay, enough for a substantial single ring but there is always the option to purchase more on the day. Collage-Decorated Owl in Papier Mâché

This is a chance to create a gorgeous Papier Mâché Owl decorated with collage in a style of your own design, that you can easily complete at home if needed. Join Papier Mâché artist Sarah Baqai to create this beauty - the species is of your choice (real or imagined), but the scale of the will be standing around 20cm tall. You will learn how to construct this sculptural piece without the need for an armature (apart from the feet), using only paper and masking tape. Complete your piece using a collaged paper layer - this means there's no need for painting or drying time, so all can be finished on the day. Finally, add the glass teddy bear eyes and your creation will come alive! Prior to the workshop, you should have a good look at some owls. Decide what sort of owl you might want to make - naturalistic or more abstract in form. Consider the collage decoration - would you like him or her to be covered naturalistically or with a more imaginatinative pattern or colour. If you have papers or magazines at home that fit the style of colour scheme of the collage layer, bring them along. There is a materials cost £5 payable on the day for this workshop. Beautiful Botanical Bas Relief Tiles

In this experimental course you will learn the various steps to making your own bas relief flower & nature plaster cast tiles. The course will cover rolling out the clay, designing and arranging the flowers and creating your own mould for the casting process. You will be using different shaped frames to create a selection of plaques. There will be flowers and foliage for you to choose from however, bringing a very small bunch of flowers/herbs/leaves/wildflowers/grasses of your choice from your own garden, means you can make a cast specific to you. Dales Landscapes in Acrylics

Join experienced artist Lynn Ward for a day of exploring the medium of acrylics and let her guide you through all the processes involved in creating your very own masterpieces. This course is a fantastic way to develop your knowledge and understanding of acrylics. Under the expert guidance of Lynn, you will learn about colour mixing, composition and drawing, all with the aim of creating a landscape painting in your own style. You will learn to consider the make up of the landscape, its light, weather and textures. What better way to show appreciation for God's own county than immortalising it on canvas! This course is designed for those with painting experience and enthusiastic beginners. The first half of the day will involve short demonstrations and some painting exercises to build your confidence and create ideas that you may want to take into your final piece. You will also begin to draw out your personal piece. Introduction to Natural Dyeing

Explore the basics of natural dyes on this one day workshop with textile artist and printmaker Kirstie Williams. During the day you will create your own vibrant colour chart of fabric swatches using a range of plants and vegetables such as onion skins, madder root, turmeric and marigolds. You'll be guided through the process of boiling dye pans to extract colour from different natural sources. Using mordants such as iron and alum you'll also explore how pre-soaking fabrics in mordants can help to alter the colours which can be achieved. Come away from the day with a range of different small fabric samples and lots of ideas for future dyeing for beginners, as well as those who have some previous dyeing experience and would like to explore natural plant based colour. Please note there is a £5 material charge payable on the day.

Join tutor Katie Davis, for a day of creative flair, and add design choices to your patterns to create unique, wonderful garments! If you attended one of Katie's 'Perfect Fit' workshops last year, this is the ideal next step- giving you the skills to adapt your block and transform it into different designs. You can also use this workshop to learn how to compare your block against commercial patterns, helping you make informed adjustments and modifications. If you haven’t attended a Perfect Fit workshop, you’re still welcome! Aspiring fashion designers or anyone with a ready-made block can also take part. Katie has a selection of blocks available, but bringing your own will help you get the most from the experience. Macrame Wall Hanging / Bunting - Half Day AM

In this workshop you will have the chance to create a beautiful piece of Wall Décor using some basic & intermediate knotting techniques in order to create for yourself a Wall Hanging or Bunting. You will be using beautiful organic recycled 3mm 3ply cords in a huge range of gorgeous colours. There will also be recycled beads should you wish to embellish your piece of art. You will be provided with all the materials needed to make your wall hanging or bunting including rope or locally sourced driftwood from the river Swale, cords, scissors, tape measure, paper tape, hooks and an assortment of beads. All the beautiful soft colourful cords are made from recycled fabrics & textiles, broken down and remade into the gorgeous organic muted earthy colours you will see at the class. Ness is very keen to create an intimate in-person workshop so that you feel you are getting the best guided experience and that you come away from your class feeling exhilarated and immensely proud of your wall hanging / bunting. TO NOTE: Cord colours will need to be ordered prior to the class, the Tutor will have them precut ready for each participant. Batik Flower Painting (4 x half day)

A 12-hour course over four weekly half-day sessions: 1pm-4pm, Thursday 17th Sept, 24th Sept, 1st Oct, 8th Oct. Discover the vibrant and expressive art of batik. A traditional technique that uses wax and dye to create stunning designs on fabric. In this 12-hour course, spread over four weekly half-day sessions, you’ll be introduced to the tools and techniques of batik, including the use of tjanting tools for mark-making and line work. You’ll start by experimenting with different batik techniques before moving on to create your own decorative flower painting. You’re welcome to work from your own images, or choose from a selection of floral designs (such as daisies, poppies, irises, and hydrangeas) provided by tutor Fiona. A wide range of dyes will be available so you can personalise your colour palette to suit your vision. By the end of the course, you’ll have a colourful batik artwork, ready for framing, or for further embellishment through embroidery or quilting if you wish. If you’d like to use your own design, please bring it pre-outlined and scaled up to approximately A3 size. You're also welcome to email your design in advance for Fiona to review and provide guidance if needed. Suitable for all abilities.

Ceramic Bear

Craft your own expressive bear sculpture in stoneware clay. Join ceramic sculptor Suzie Wright for a creative and hands-on workshop where you’ll make your very own ceramic bear from stoneware clay. Whether your bear is shy or bold, sitting serenely or full of personality, you'll have the freedom to bring your own artistic vision to life. Working in a small group, you’ll receive plenty of guidance, with step-by-step demonstrations and one-to-one support from Suzie throughout the day. Although all bears will be made in a seated position (to suit the time and techniques available), you’ll have plenty of scope to customise features, posture, and expression - no two bears will be the same! Once completed, your sculpture will be carefully taken away by Suzie to dry, glaze, and be fired, and will be returned to you in about three weeks. The finished piece will be fully weatherproof, making it suitable for display indoors or out in the garden. All tools and materials are provided. Please note: There is an £17 materials charge payable to the tutor on the day. This covers all clay, glazing, and kiln firing costs.

Screen printing is a vibrant, flexible medium beloved of artists and craftspeople, in which the print is created by pressing ink through a mesh screen with the image created by a stencil design to resist the ink. This course will introduce you to the basic equipment, materials and methods of this medium.
