Wild About Harvest Mice (age 11-17)

This event is designed for ages 11-17 in partnership with the Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group. Young people attending this even must be accompanied by their adult at all times. Accompanying adults go free. Join us for a hands-on Harvest Mouse Survey and help make a real difference for wildlife. Learn how to identify suitable habitat, search for harvest mouse nests, and collect valuable data that contributes to a national citizen science project. No previous experience is needed – just an interest in nature and a willingness to explore. This is a great opportunity to develop practical wildlife survey skills, connect with like-minded people, and take positive action for conservation. Every survey helps improve our understanding of harvest mouse populations and helps us to protect the harvest mouse population at Stanwick Lakes. Fabric Printing: Tales from the Fen

Fabric Printing – Lizzie Ault: Tales from the Fen Join us for one of our autumn workshops and create your very own tote bag. You will use ready cut stamps and lino blocks to print and create your own design. Supported by artist and printmaker Lizzie Ault, who will be providing her own hand cut blocks for you to use. All materials are included in this workshop. Suitable for ages 7+ (younger children are welcome to have a go with supervision). Parking is included in the ticket price. Cancellation Policy Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Cancellations made within 4 weeks of the session are non-refundable. Introduction to Stick & Staff Making

Introduction to Stick & Staff Making By the end of the day, each participant will have made a stick or staff of their choosing and have the basic skills to continue making sticks/staffs on their own and develop their skills. During the session, participants will have learned the basic skills required for making sticks and staffs. This will include: – Safe use and care of sharp tools and other equipment needed. – Foraging for suitable sticks and other pieces for making a walking stick and/or staff. – Methods to straighten a foraged stick for making a walking stick if this is needed or desired. – Removing bark if required or preparing a bark surface if being left on. – Mounting a handle or other topper/decoration. – Fitting a collar to a joint where required for aesthetics, and trimming the joint to size. – Tapering the end of a shaft and fitting a ferrule. – Smoothing the stick and applying decoration by carving, pyrography, painting, etc. – Understanding the need for ongoing care and maintenance of a finished stick. Participants are invited to bring a stick of their own if they have one they would like to work on. This should be a sound stick, between 1m and 2m long, depending on whether you want to make a walking stick or a staff.

Linocut Christmas Cards Join us for a creative and hands-on workshop where you’ll design and carve your very own linocut stamp. Over the course of the session, experienced printmaker, Kerrie Suteu, will guide you through each step: sketching your design, transferring it onto lino, carving safely, inking your block, and printing your card on quality paper. By the end of the day you’ll leave with a small set of Christmas cards ready to send, plus the skills and confidence to print again at home. Parking is included in the ticket price. Willow Weaving Course: Festive Trees & Reindeer

Embrace the festive season with this joyful half-day willow weaving workshop led by willow artist Chaz Friend. You’ll learn how to create two classic seasonal pieces — a charming willow reindeer and a stylised Christmas tree — using simple but effective techniques suitable for complete beginners. Once you’ve learned the basics of each item, you’ll be free to spend the rest of the session working on the piece you most enjoy, whether that’s perfecting your reindeer or creating a small collection of trees. This relaxed and creative workshop is a wonderful way to explore willow weaving while making natural decorations to treasure year after year. The course takes place in the Heritage Craft Barn at Stanwick Lakes, a 750-acre protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. Home Education Day Key Stage 3

Our next Home Education Day for KS3 will be on Thursday 19th November 2026. Everyone is welcome but is best suited to learners aged 11-14 or those accessing the Key Stages 3 curriculum. There will be three timed sessions including Owl Pellet Dissection, Political Power: From Iron Age to Roman Britain, and our new Become a Ranger session, as well as more informal, drop-in learning activities. Owl Pellet Dissection Become a wildlife detective and uncover what our tawny owls have been eating by exploring the bones, fur and feathers hidden inside their pellets. Political Power: From Iron Age to Roman Britain Join us for a local history study and learn about the changing nature of political power from the Iron Age to the Roman period here at Stanwick Lakes. Become a Ranger! Learn about how we manage our site and join our Ranger team to complete conservation work. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Siblings are welcome, children wishing to participate must purchase a ticket. Attending adults and non participating children under 2 are free of charge. Christmas Woodcarving Workshop - One Day

You will learn the traditional craft of wood carving by hand which dates back thousands of years, from when we first learned to make sharp tools. This one-day course is suitable for those starting out and also for carvers who would like to develop their skills further. For beginners, the day starts with the introduction of the tools and the techniques and materials used for hand carving wood. This will be followed by a small carving project to become familiar with the basic skills and then, after lunch, you will move on to a new project that involves creating a larger relief carving. The day is run in a very flexible format and allows for more experienced carvers to develop their skills under the expert guidance of Pete, your tutor. Green woodworking is an ancient craft long predating the coming of sawmills and kiln drying. This craft utilises the properties of unseasoned timber to create anything from a humble spoon to a grand timber framed house. Carved decoration is as old as the craft and examples can be seen in every church and historic building in England. The course takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity.
