BOOK TICKETS FOR INTESA DUO ‘Voices of San Lazzaro’ Intesa is a duo for voice and viol formed by Lucine Musaelian and Nathan Giorgetti in 2023 at the Royal Academy of Music. The ensemble’s name, an Italian word meaning ‘understanding’ or ‘meeting of minds’, reflects the collaborative ethos at the heart of their work. Their programmes place folk and early music repertoire side by side, bringing together European and Armenian traditions through narrative and self-accompanied performance. For their Festival debut, they reference the Armenian monastery, San Lazzaro degli Armeni, in the Venetian lagoon, where (since 1717) monks and scholars have gathered to preserve the traditions of early Christianity and chant. Their Voices of San Lazzaro programme explores the union of Armenian and Italian traditions, weaving together a story of Armenian faith and a female story of musical prowess in the Italian courts, featuring works by the Caccini sisters, Barbara Strozzi, and Monteverdi alongside the Armenian ashugh tradition of storytelling through song. BOOK TICKETS FOR THE PADDINGTON TRIO ‘To an Old Friend’ Our newest Festival Associate Artists, the Paddington Trio, make their third visit to the Festival, after stunning previous performances at our 2024 Chamber Festival and 2025 Summer Festival. ‘Music can take you anywhere when played like this’ The Guardian Much like the famous bear, Finnish violinist Tuulia Hero, Irish cellist Patrick Moriarty, and American pianist Stephanie Tang first came together at Paddington Station and made London their home. From the start they achieved a meteoric rise, emerging as First Prize recipients of two prestigious London chamber music competitions: the 70th Royal Over-Seas League Competition and the Parkhouse Award at Wigmore Hall. Their programme To an Old Friend features works that have been ‘dedicated’ to friends and artists, by Pärt and Shostakovich, together with a new commission from locally-born composer, Mark Boden, and culminates in Tchaikovsky’s great Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50 written in memory ‘of a great artist, Nikolai Rubinstein’. BOOK TICKETS FOR RYAN ZHU Hastings International Piano Competition winner 2026 As part of a new collaboration between the Hastings International Piano Competition and the Festival, the HIPC 2026 1st prize winner, Canadian pianist Ryan Zhu, makes a Lichfield debut. A recent graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, and currently studying for a Master’s at Yale, Ryan is without doubt a pianist to watch. Having reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, in Hastings he also took away the Orchestra Prize and the Audience Prize, and has already recently made his London debut at the Wigmore Hall. His programme this afternoon will include works by Schumann, Beethoven Sonata in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1 and Brahms Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 35. BOOK TICKETS FOR CLARE HAMMOND ‘a pianist of extraordinary gifts’ Gramophone Clare Hammond returns to Lichfield once again for a programme full of flare and fire. Recognised for her imaginative playing and communicative performance style, Clare is an established recording artist, prize-winner and worldwide recitalist. Her notable appearances include those at the BBC Proms and she has appeared as concerto soloist with BBC NOW, London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras. Clare recently founded the Gloucestershire Piano Trust to support her ongoing work in schools and prisons, which reaches around 4,000 schoolchildren and 300 prisoners each year. Her recital this evening features a short work that was co-created by prisoners at HMP Oakwood and composer Michael Betteridge. A short documentary about this project, Internal Victories, will be shown ahead of Clare’s performance, starting at 7pm. Clare also plays Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 33, works by Chopin and Janacek, and finishes with virtuosic arrangements of pieces by Gershwin as well as Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite. BOOK TICKETS FOR CHAMELEON QUARTET Chameleon Quartet are a prize-winning, versatile woodwind ensemble with a mission to share music with audiences far and wide. Their performances feature an impressive array of up to 13 woodwind instruments split between only four members, with the Quartet seamlessly transitioning between them to showcase the diversity of the woodwind family. Chameleon are winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Award, 2023, and are Live Music Now artists specialising in SEND and primary school engagement. They were recipients of the RPS Enterprise Fund for ‘Virtually Live’ in 2021, a concert series driven by a passion for connecting with their audience through conversation and interaction. Their performing and engagement projects work in tandem, with a firm belief that every piece of music can be understood and enjoyed by anyone. BOOK TICKETS FOR REGENCY QUARTET Young Artist Series Winners of the 2025 Royal Over-Seas League Strings and Keyboard Ensembles Prize and Kirckman Concert Society Young Artists 2025/26, the Regency String Quartet was formed at the Royal Academy of Music in 2021 and comprises of scholars at London conservatoires. Led by Mabelle Park pictured, the Quartet has been generously supported by the Frost Trust Advanced Specialist Strings Ensemble Training Scheme from 2021-2024 through the Royal Academy of Music, and they appear today as part of the Festival’s long standing collaboration with the Royal Over-Seas League in London. The Quartet have performed at Wigmore Hall, Kings Place and Conway Hall, and have given recitals at St George’s Bristol, the Mill Hill Music Festival, St James’s Piccadilly, the Royal Academy of Music and the Young Artists’ Platform in London. This weekend sees the ensemble’s Festival debut and their programme will feature Haydn String Quartet in B minor, Op. 33, No. 1, Ravel String Quartet in F major and Webern Langsamer Satz. BOOK TICKETS FOR AARON AZUNDA AKUGBO & RYAN CORBETT Two former Festival Young Artists – and fellows Scots! – combine for an exciting evening of original works and transcriptions, as trumpeter Aaron Azunda Akugbo and classical accordionist Ryan Corbett return to Lichfield for a dazzling programme that spans the centuries. Both are now established soloists – Ryan is a current BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and Classic FM Rising Star; Aaron is also a leading exponent of his instrument and regularly freelances in the principal chairs of some of the most prestigious orchestras in the UK including the Philharmonia, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. To close our Chamber Music weekend, they will bring us a touch of folk, baroque music from Venice’s Marcello, a flavour of France from Fauré, and a taste of South America from the ever-popular Argentinian tango maestro, Piazzolla.
