The annual Yorkshire RMetS PhD Showcase returns! We welcome three PhD students from the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science to present their research. These talks highlight topics currently being studied in meteorology and climate science, as well as their applications to society. Each year, floods cause billions of dollars in economic losses and affect millions of people. As these events become more frequent and severe with climate change, robust early warning systems are needed more than ever. While many components, such as warning dissemination and response preparedness, contribute to these systems, they are first and foremost underpinned by accurate forecasts. AI for Floods (AIFL) is a new machine learning flood forecasting model developed at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

Although air quality and climate change are often seen as two different issues, they are in fact interconnected and should be understood as two sides of the same coin. Greenhouse gases and air pollutants frequently originate from the same sources, such as fossil fuel-based power generation and industrial processes. Actions that reduce air pollution can therefore deliver significant climate benefits.However, the relationship is not always straightforward: some measures designed to mitigate climate change have, in practice, led to unintended negative consequences for air quality.
