Opening Reception: Ingrained: Stories Carved in Wood

Ingrained: Stories Carved in Wood explores woodwork from the late 17th to early 19th centuries—a period when wood became the primary medium in Northern Europe used to express identity, belief, and skill. Techniques like chip carving, pyrography, and painted rosemaling were more than decoration; they were how craftspeople signed their voice into the wood, shaped by their region, their family traditions, and the tools passed down to them. A dowry chest spoke of a marriage. A ritual bowl spoke of a harvest. A carved symbol above a doorway was a wish for safety, prosperity, or protection from what couldn't be seen. Ingrained gathers these stories from the countryside and homes of Scandinavia, spanning the late 17th to early 19th centuries. The pieces on display—storage chests, bridal gifts, ale bowls, and decorative furnishings—reveal a culture that didn't separate the useful from the beautiful. To the people who made and used these objects, an item could be both at once: a bowl to hold ale, and a story to hold a blessing. Ingrained is possible through the donation of artifacts from the collection of Bill Wangensteen to Norway House. On view for the first time, we invite you to read these objects the way their makers intended—not simply as folk artifacts, but as a visual language, carved with intention, and carried forward through hand, heart, and heritage. Saturday Barnehage with Kari Stern

Norwegian children's language teacher, Kari Stern, leads a special session of Barnehage, a Norwegian language program for pre-schoolers. Two-to-four year olds and their parents or guardians craft, read, sing, and play in Norwegian. Kari uses a children's book to set the theme and children get to hear, speak, read, and create art using the language. July's Barnehage book is: Tassen på Sirkus (Paw at the Circus) ! Follow Paw the dog during his adventures at the circus—på norsk! Norway House Members: $25 General Registration: $30 The price is per family, so if you have more than one two-to-four-year-old in the family, you may all attend for one price. — Kari teaches Barnehage, children's language class in Norwegian, each semester for 12 weeks at Norway House. Her special Saturday classes are an opportunity for children in Barnehage to have greater exposture to the language. If you want your child to learn Norwegian, but were uncertain about classes, the Saturday Barnehage is wonderful opportunity to see how fun learning a language can be. Register here

Sølje Spoon Earring Class with Liz Bucheit

Make Norwegian silver sølje spoon earrings with an award-winning jeweler. The bright "spoons" sparkle as they move and reflect light. Ever wonder why sølje pins have those shiny dangles with silver disc drops? These discs are called “spoons” or “shells” in Norwegian. Silver has long been a protective element against evil and abduction by the hulder folk in Scandinavia. Legend has it that should you run into the devil wearing your sparkling sølje he would see his own reflection and run away! Don’t run away from a chance to create your own silver and gold washed earrings in this short class designed to introduce you to the beauty of Scandinavian silver work. Students will assemble up to 2 pairs of earrings using multiple disc elements suspended from sterling silver French hook ear wires. A willingness to use hand tools (pliers) is required. At the end of the class, Liz will give a talk and demonstration on how to care for your sølje and other silver jewelry. Additional earring kits will be available for purchase. Materials cost: $75 per student *Pliers will be provided but are not included in the kit price Payable to the teacher at the time of class. Copper Viking Knit Bracelet with Liz Bucheit

Learn the technique to make this beautiful and flexible bracelet. Work with copper, an affordable metal, with reputed healing qualities. Explore the ancient tradition of chain making! You’ll use “Viking Knitting”, a centuries-old looping technique, to create a beautiful copper bracelet. Historically, this unique method of weaving resembles “Nålbinding” knitting and was used to fabricate everything from sweaters to netting for catching fish. You’ll have the opportunity to complete a bracelet in a single day—no previous experience required and all tools and materials will be provided. Stephanie Hansen is known for her cookbooks, podcasts, t.v. appearances, and Substack column. Her husband, Kurt Johnson is the author of The Barrens, a 2023 MN Book Awards winner, and has the Substack, “Kurt Johnson Books.” Now, they’ve teamed up for a novel-with-recipes, The Moon Tavern.
