Do you want to try your hand at being creative but think you don’t know where to start? This is a fun, safe introduction to Painting in Acrylics. Whether you’ve always wanted to give painting a go or you just fancy trying something creative for fun, our Painting in Acrylics taster session is the perfect place to start. Get stuck into bold colours, experiment with brushes and textures and enjoy the freedom of creating your own artwork in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. These fun, hands-on sessions are all about having a go and learning new techniques. You’ll discover that art is for everyone — no experience needed. With plenty of guidance and encouragement along the way by an experieced artist and art teacher, you’ll learn the basics of acrylic painting while enjoying a creative break from the everyday. Exhibition: Women’s Land Army

War affected every section of society, not just the military. More food needed to be produced and, as men were recruited into the armed services, there were fewer hands to do the work. At the same time, farmers were being pressed to convert more land to arable from pasture. Women had always been involved in agriculture, horticulture and forestry, but now their contribution was critical... This exhibition will explore the practicalities of how the Land Army was organised, the key figures involved and some of the challenges that were encountered along the way. Despite the misgivings, and sometimes the hostility, of politicians, civil servants, landowners, farmers, trade unions and foresters, who doubted that women would be able to undertake the range of farm work, and very often failed to give WLA leaders and volunteers the credit and recognition they, the women of ‘the Cinderella service’, deserved. With thanks to Dr John Godfrey for his writing and research for this exhibition. The exhibition has been generously sponsored by Oakland Grange and Oakland Court Care Homes and other donors. Watercolour painting influenced by Turner at Petworth House

During this course you will have the opportunity to visit Petworth House where you will obtain entry to the permanent collection of Turner paintings. You will have the opportunity to sketch in the grounds where Turner painted and have use of the studio there. You will also have the opportunity to return to West Dean for inspiration and use of the studio. The West Dean minibus will transport you to Petworth House and return you back to West Dean. You will focus on watercolour painting, its flexibility and subtlety which can be achieved from simple elements of pigment, paper and water. Your tutor will help you with your development, guiding you with demonstrations and discussions both in the studio and outdoors. You will produce collections of small quick studies through to larger comprehensive work. Working at your own pace on individual pieces using observation and studies from both Petworth House and West Dean. Weather permitting you will be working 'en plein air' in both location in conjunction with studio time. You will finish the course with a collection of between 8 and 15 exercises and paintings produces during the course. Your tutor will push the boundaries on what you can achieve, expand your understanding of perspective when using both linear and aerial observation. Your portfolio of work should be varied covering both landscape, structure (ie buildings and interiors) produced during the course.
