Plan your school holidays to include our art workshops. Children's art workshop for 8-12 year olds. Let your creative ideas flow as you design your very own circus, all materials are supplied. The planned workshops so far: Tuesday 28th July: Canaletto in Venice. Tuesday 27 October Explore shape, form and bright colour Hundertwasser Each workshop is £12 per child and places are limited.

Book and Print Fair

Artist Paul Winner carried his sketching materials and watercolours wherever he went and amassed sketch books, paintings, drawings and prints, chronicling the places he visited and the personalities he encountered. This Fair will have a number of his unique prints and sketches available for you to browse and purchase. Paul very kindly gave these to the museum to be sold for the benefit of the museum and its ongoing work. This sale will be a tribute to his creativity. There will also be a wide range of second hand books available. Come and have a look to see what you can find!

Talk: An evening with Anthony Archer-Wills

Anthony Archer-Wills is among the world’s foremost authorities on Water Gardening responsible for developing many of the techniques now frequently used in the construction of ponds and waterfalls. His passion was with water and being brought up with sailing craft and the magic of springs, pools and lakes he launched his own Pond and Waterfall construction business in the mid 1960’s together with an Aquatic plant nursery. Anthony went on to lecture at Kew gardens, New York Botanic Garden, Chelsea Physic Garden, The Royal Horticultural Society and universities and training facilities both in Europe and the USA. Besides taking part in several radio and television programs including Animal Planet’s ‘The Pool Master’, Anthony has written ‘The Water Gardener’ which is still considered the definitive work and used in many colleges, also, ‘Water Power’ and ‘Designing Water Gardens’ together with numerous magazine articles. Anthony has designed numerous Lakes, Swimming Ponds, Streams, Waterfalls and Grottos and Bio filtration systems together with adjacent landscaping, boardwalks and other related features. His work has been extensive in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean Islands and the West Indies. Anthony has had the privilege of working for major corporate organizations, the nobility, celebrities and numerous discerning landowners in the private sector.

Exhibition: Women’s Land Army

War affected every section of society, not just the military. More food needed to be produced and, as men were recruited into the armed services, there were fewer hands to do the work. At the same time, farmers were being pressed to convert more land to arable from pasture. Women had always been involved in agriculture, horticulture and forestry, but now their contribution was critical... This exhibition will explore the practicalities of how the Land Army was organised, the key figures involved and some of the challenges that were encountered along the way. Despite the misgivings, and sometimes the hostility, of politicians, civil servants, landowners, farmers, trade unions and foresters, who doubted that women would be able to undertake the range of farm work, and very often failed to give WLA leaders and volunteers the credit and recognition they, the women of ‘the Cinderella service’, deserved. With thanks to Dr John Godfrey for his writing and research for this exhibition. The exhibition has been generously sponsored by Oakland Grange and Oakland Court Care Homes. Adventures with Lego 2026

For children during the school holidays, enjoy Adventures with Lego. £5 per child per session, to include a drink and a biscuit. Parent / Guardian must accompany children throughout the workshop. To give you more information about how the sessions work: Each time there is a theme, including build a new town or build a bridge! We ask the children to think what they could build and have some suggestions. We then pour out the enormous amount of Lego for the children to start building, they can put their creations on the table. There is always a refreshment break for the children in the foyer.
