The Spanish Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the first Spanish orchestra to grace the series for decades, brings with them a Mediterranean-inspired programme. Rapidly making a mark on the international scene, their Music Director, Roberto González-Monjas, will be joined by “the new face of classical guitar”, Thibaut Garcia, who will take the spotlight for Rodrigo’s exquisite Concierto de Aranjuez. The concert opens with the fiery elegance of Falla’s Three Dances from his ballet The Three-Cornered Hat. After the interval, journey through the enchanting world of Ravel’s whimsical Mother Goose Suite and soak up the lush, evocative portrait of Seville’s soul in Turina’s Sinfonia sevillana. The concert culminates in a mesmerizing crescendo with Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro. SYO Disney Classics – Community Day April 2026

Shortlisted for ‘Best New Project’ by Making Music 2024. A huge thank you to The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation and Tramlines Trust for providing financial support in running this community day. Calling all Sheffield (and surrounding area) musicians both young and old! SYO provide their 12th installment of their popular community day series. We also welcome beginners (Grade 1-4) to join us for a part-day version of the day – so all abilities are welcomed under the baton of our conductor – River Edis-Smith. Aladdin Medley – Metkin/Rice – Full Day The Jungle Book Medley – Sherman – Full Day Night on Bald Mountain (Music from Disney’s Fantasia) – Mussorgsky – (Full Day Abridged Version/Part Day Simplified Parts) All ages and backgrounds are welcome, but we strongly recommend ABRSM Grade 5 and above, (or with similiar experience without the equivalent grading) for full-day participants. NEW: Beginners instrumentalists are invited to participate in community day for a mini rehearsal from 2:45pm, culminating in a concert with everyone from 4:15pm. For the part-day experience, we will be rehearsing and performing from an abridged version of Night on Bald Mountain (From Disney’s Fantasia) and is suited for ABRSM Grade 1-4 players.

Neil Cowley Trio: Built on Bach

Built on Bach is an evening of Neil Cowley Trio music using Bach’s work as a ‘jumping off point’ for their iconic jazz sound. “He was the beginning of it all – the fundament to my technique and the core of my musicality”. Neil Cowley didn’t realise the profound impact that Johann Sebastian Bach had on his career until he stumbled upon his gravestone in Leipzig, Germany. Cowley is a man of duplicity, as he says, “the heart-felt jazz-soul-blues stuff: and the head, the classical” ( Interview with Andy Robson, Jazzwise) Formed in the late 2000s, the Neil Cowley Trio released their first studio album in June 2006, through Cowley’s own record label, Hide Inside Records. After the original album established Cowley as a dazzling pianist and stunning composer, he examined the possibilities of the acoustic piano trio and created a unique trademark sound that delivered powerful music of massive dynamic range and contrast. At the heart of their captivating live performances is Cowley’s marvellously English wit, mischievous humour and remarkable rapport with his audience. Having taken time for a solo career exploring electronics and contemporary classical music, Cowley came back to his trio and brought all he’d learned to develop their existing jazz style. Using Bach’s original pieces as a starting point, together with his bandmates Rex Horan (bass) and Evan Jenkins (drums), new compositions took place.

Thomas Stearn: ‘Where Light is a Thought’ Song Cycle Premiere

The premiere of Thomas Stearn’s ‘Where Light is a Thought’, also featuring composition by Anna Appleby. There will also be a free Rush Hour concert in the Upper Chapel earlier in the day performed by Classical Student Ensembles. Doors 5:10pm, start time 5:30pm. In this Song Cycle premiere of Thomas Stearn’s ‘Where Light is a Thought’, five poems by Katharine Towers tell the story of a lone figure who walks from darkness into light. She leaves her home during the night and walks through woods and then onward into fields, encountering a holly tree and a robin. As dawn arrives the world slowly appears, each of its details acquiring colour and shape and, in some way, becoming real. The musical settings of the poems immerse the listener in the journey of the lone figure as she walks, stopping at various points to observe, listen and think. Sterndale Singers: Shakespeare in Song Concert

If music be the food of love, play on…we are commanded by the bard himself. Join us for a celebration of some of Shakespeare’s greatest words set to music on Friday 24th April 2026 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Millhouses Church. Daniel Sumner (baritone) will be our guest soloist for the evening. Drama, romance, adventure and comedy from many of Shakespeare’s plays will be represented, including from The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, As you Like it, Twelfth Night, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Love’s Labour’s Lost, along with several of his sonnets. The musical arrangements inspired by the bard’s words include those by composers Bob Chilcott, Matthew Harris, Daniel Hellden, John Rutter, George Shearing and others. Long-time collaborators, Xenia brings insight and sensitivity to Lockwood’s music. The concert features two of Pestova Bennett’s own compositions alongside a selection of Lockwood’s works for prepared piano in which ribbons, objects and a transducer speaker are placed inside the instrument; an example of Lockwood’s pioneering electroacoustic work; and ‘Gone’, a playful performance piece in which a music box is floated through the concert hall using helium balloons.
