London Tango Quintet with Craig Ogden

London Tango Quintet at the Movies The London Tango Quintet has a distinguished line-up of internationally acclaimed musicians, each with major careers in the classical music world as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral artists. Joining them in Parbold is the celebrated guitarist, Craig Ogden. The concert celebrates tango’s long love affair with cinema, featuring iconic music from Por una Cabeza and Last Tango in Paris to Tango de Roxanne from Moulin Rouge. Since 1921, when Rudolf Valentino’s brief dance in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse made him the defining screen idol of the silent film era, directors have returned to tango for its intensity and drama, with memorable on-screen moments from Sean Connery, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jennifer Lopez. Its most explosive cinematic encounter remains the climactic scene of Moulin Rouge, with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Join the London Tango Quintet in an unforgettable evening oftango from the silver screen.

Virtuoso duo Alena Baeva and pianist Joseph Havlat’s debut in Parbold promises exhilarating music‑making with a rare spark. Audiences instantly connect to violinist Alena Baeva (‘a magnetic presence’ – New York Classical Review). She is celebrated internationally as one of the most compelling violinists of her generation. Her playing is admired for its freshness, emotional honesty and striking intensity. With a repertoire as wide-ranging as her musical curiosity, she has performed with many world- renowned orchestras. Joseph Havlat, a gifted pianist and composer, has appeared in major concert halls across the UK, Europe, America, Japan and Australia. Together, Alena and Joseph bring a deeply engaging programme about the twentieth century’s re-discovery of folk and ethnic music. Bartok’s Violin Sonata No. 2 incorporates and crystallises his own Eastern European folk tradition; Szymanowski’s Kurpian Songs bring to life folk music from the Kurpie region of northern Poland. The second half includes a Mozart Sonata written at the height of his powers and, to return us to the rustic theme, Germaine Tailleferre’s often performed ballet suite from the 1920s based on old French dance melodies. Noriko Ogawa, piano

The renowned pianist Noriko Ogawa is admired for interpretations that shimmer with colour and sensitivity, revealing the depth and imagination at the heart of her artistry. We are delighted to welcome Noriko back to Parbold. Her visits have become a much-loved and popular part of our concert series – a testament to both her global reputation and the affection our audience holds for her. Noriko is well-known for juggling a most demanding schedule as international piano virtuoso, judge and chair of piano competitions, and multiple professorships, but over the years Parbold still features in her diary. Noriko’s programme explores some of the most melodious and technically adventurous works – from the very personal intermezzi of Brahms to Chopin’s joyous Ballade No. 3 and emotionally charged Scherzo, to Beethoven’s challenging and tempestuous ‘Appassionata’ Sonata. “What sets her apart from other pianists is her wonderful sense of timing, she allows the music to breathe.” – The Times

Connaught Brass

Connaught Brass’ musicians are quickly making a name for themselves as a fresh talent in the chamber music world. The ensemble’s ability to manipulate and unify sound earned them 1st Prize in the Inaugural Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition (2019) and the Royal Overseas League Mixed Ensemble Competition (2022). Vibrant, spirited and bold, they place emphasis on their friendship with one another to showcase their individual musical personalities as a unique collective sound. This Christmas, Connaught Brass will be heralding the season with sparkling arrangements of much-loved festive classics in their signature warm, engaging style. Seasonal favourites by Vivaldi, Prokofiev, Bach and Tchaikovsky have their place blending with standards from the twentieth century to make for a happy opening to the festive season.

Victoria String Quintet with Martin Roscoe, piano

The New Year opens with this special collaboration, bringing together some of the UK’s most distinguished musicians for an evening of chamber music. The programme features two celebrated piano concertos: Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12, written for small ensemble, and Lachner’s rarely heard version of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, one of the great landmarks of the repertoire. “Roscoe is a pianist who both thinks and offers full-blooded playing of breadth and depth.” – Daily Telegraph

We are delighted to host the return to Parbold of one of the outstanding British pianists of all time. Paul Lewis is one of the foremost interpreters of the classic piano repertoire, performing with the world’s leading orchestras and appearing at major festivals across the globe. His sincerity, depth and artistry have earned him a devoted following. Paul is known for exploring composers in focused projects that reveal new connections and insights. His current series Mozart+ places Mozart’s piano works alongside music by later composers, illuminating the legacy and influence of Mozart’s compositions. Paul’s programme presents two Mozart sonatas: the early Sonata No. 6, written during the transition from harpsichord to fortepiano, and the much‑loved Sonata No. 11, ending with the famous Alla Turca Rondo. Between them sit Mendelssohn’s brilliant Variations Sérieuses, and Copland’s striking Piano Variations, composed at the time of the Wall Street Crash. “Total fidelity to the music’s structure and inner spirit, and an emotional response that never suffocates or distorts.” – The Times

Harriet Mackenzie, violin with the Celoniatus Ensemble

A Musical Celebration of Nature Internationally acclaimed violinist Harriet Mackenzie and her dazzling Celoniatus Ensemble perform two of the most popular works in the violin repertoire: Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The evening also includes a popular Mozart Divertimento, an air from the 18th Century and a modern arrangement of a traditional Danish folk dance. As their Musical Director, Harriet is a passionate advocate for new works and brings the same freshness and imagination to the great classics. Under her direction, the ensemble moves effortlessly from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary creations, always with flair and emotional depth. Aquinas Piano Trio

Their recordings have been met with enthusiasm from critics and listeners alike. What makes the Aquinas Piano Trio so compelling is the natural rapport between its players and the joy they bring to making music together. Their performances are known for warmth, precision and a wonderful sense of shared storytelling. The Trio’s concert will take the audience on a journey of moods beginning with the lively, toe-tapping joy of Mozart’s Trio KV502, written at the height of his powers to Brahms’ Trio No. 3’s uneasy world of introspective, emotional drama. We welcome award-winning pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, an artist celebrated worldwide for performances that combine a refinement, imagination and a remarkable clarity that have made him one of the most admired pianists of his generation. A performer of rare versatility and charisma, Jean-Efflam brings a unique blend of brilliance and sensitivity to his concerts. He enjoys a prolific recording and international concert career, with performances described as possessing ‘exquisite sensibilité, delivered with the most subtly varied, beautiful sound’ (Seen and Heard Magazine). Jean-Efflam’s programme focuses on two Beethoven sonatas and Ravel’s Valses Nobles et Sentimentales and La Valse, while including retrospective homages by both composers to Haydn. Peter Donohoe, piano

Renowned for his versatility as a performer of the great Romantic repertoire to contemporary works, pianist Peter Donohoe brings a rare combination of power, sensitivity and imagination to everything he plays. Peter Donohoe closes our season with a landmark performance of Chopin’s two collections of Études – works dedicated to Liszt, that originated in exercises but in Chopin’s compositional artistry became ‘masterpieces’ (Berlioz), and ‘truly poetic’ (Schumann). Their popular melodies gained evocative nicknames from enthusiastic 19th century fans. The formidably demanding Études, including ‘Sadness’, ‘Revolutionary’ and ‘Winter Wind’, are today still attempted by only the greatest of pianists. Peter Donohoe’s programme also includes some of Schubert’s beautiful Impromptus, as a tribute to his 200th anniversary and Schumann’s Variations on the name Abegg. Peter Donohoe is widely admired as one of the most distinguished pianists of his generation, known for his extraordinary technical command, deep musical insight and a career that has taken him to major stages across the world. His international reputation was launched in 1982 when he became joint winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, a landmark achievement that led to collaborations with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors. Beyond the concert platform, Peter Donohoe is a respected figure in the musical community, frequently serving on juries for major international competitions.
