Traditional Glass Painting

"I just wanted to say what an absolutely fantastic day I had on the 12th on Kerry's glass painting class. Kerry explains everything so well and with infinite patience and really opened my eyes to new techniques. She is an amazing teacher and the class was brilliant." PaoloTraditional Glass PaintingCourse Outline Discover the traditional skill of painting on glass using vitreous glass paints and specialised brushes. In this one day course you will paint a number of samples and a finished piece to practise a variety of lining, shading and sgraffito techniques. The pieces will be fired overnight. Painted pieces from this course can be brought along and incorporated in our 2 day Leading and Glazing course. Please note: due to the paint pigment containing lead this course is not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Profile - Kerry Collison Kerry trained in stained glass at Swansea College of Art and has worked on commercial glazing projects as part of the Cathedral Studios, Canterbury and the Architectural Glass Centre, Swansea. Kerry’s personal work illustrates mischief and anarchy into controlled glass material; focusing on using traditional skills to produce fun and contemporary artworks. She is intent on bringing the comic book back to its original format: the stained glass window. Her pieces have been shown in numerous exhibitions, including the 6th John Ruskin Prize.

You will learn the fundamentals of flameworking, also known as lampworking, with demonstrations and plenty of practice time, working from your own torch. Our experienced tutor will guide you through the technique; introduce you to flameworking tools and equipment; the types and properties of glass; styles of flameworking; and how to keep it safe. You will have plenty of opportunity to express your creativity with the colour and design of your beads and in the afternoon the chance to explore a more sculptural item. Your glass items will need to cool overnight in a kiln and can either be collected at a later time or posted on to you. Flameworking glass is both an accessible and addictive technique ideally suited to beginners with an interest in creating with glass. All materials, tools and equipment are provided. One Day Further Glassblowing

Course Outline If you enjoyed our One Day Glassblowing course then this is the ideal follow-on class to consolidate what you have previously learned. Start the day with some hands-on glass sculpture. You will gather molten glass from the furnace and learn how to sculpt it into small objects like a flower or a bird - getting the feel of how to work the material. You'll follow up by making a tumbler with a choice of surface colour. After a busy morning, we will help you to make a bowl or a plate during the afternoon. We run a maximum of four students to one tutor, working the hot glass in turns, you will have plenty of ‘hands-on’ time. Introduction/Refresher to Flameworking with Boro – Zoe Garner

Course Outline Join Zoe Garner for an introduction to flameworking with borosilicate or 'hard glass' On this one-day taster session, using a torch, you will experiment with a range of techniques to manipulate solid glass boro rods including: Gathering glass to form globes Linking rods to form chains Using rods to form sculptural components The forms you make can stay as separate examples of the technique, or you can join them together to form a small sculptural piece. Skills learned on this class will enable you to further explore the potential of flameworking with boro. Notes: Borosilicate (boro') or 'hard glass' is a more durable glass that copes well with temperature changes and is less prone to cracking than 'soft glass' most often used by flameworkers, beadmakers and glassblowers. The melting temperature of boro is higher than regular glass and so the techniques for working with it are slightly different. This course makes an excellent starter or refresher for Zoe Garner's 3-Day Masterclass 'Connected Forms - Flameworking - Zoe Garner' Zoe Garner Zoe's work is an exploration of symmetry, harmonious proportion and balance; its relationship to human behaviour and the natural world if the balance is tipped. Zoe's fascination lies with small changes creating a large impact to a later state. Often unnoticed and unseen, interactions that create a different view or perception.
