JazzLeeds - Conrad Clenton Nonet plays Mingus

The Conrad Clenton Nonet brings the immense force of a fully fledged musical freight train thundering down the tracks to the sound of rambunctious jazz and blues. Comprised of some of the finest of young Leeds musicians, the nonet amplifies its members’ powerful voices by pushing the sonic boundaries of improvised music whilst rooted in the rich blues tradition. After playing together consistently for the past three years, the band operates like a well-oiled machine, allowing for pure freedom of expression and musical understanding between the players. The Conrad Clenton Nonet is a bold call to action, a musical powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with, performing original compositions and arrangements inspired by the powerful and protesting sound of Charles Mingus.. They played a support slot for us at Seven with Emily Masser for Jazz Leeds in 2024 and we thoroughly enjoyed it – we are pleased to invite them back again! Charles Mingus (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) is considered one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history, with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz greats, such as Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, and Eric Dolphy. His music is celebrated for creating a powerful, often angry, and explicitly political sound that served as a direct musical protest against racism and social injustice, making him a crucial voice in jazz as protest music.

Seven's 19th Birthday Bash

Join us at Seven for our 19th Birthday Bash from 4pm. We have two great bands lined up. COLOUR OF LIGHT 4 – 5.30pm Colour of Light are a guitar, mandolin, banjo, double bass and harmonica ensemble who blend folk, blues, bluegrass and classical influences into their own unique sound. Their finely crafted original songs delivered by three diverse singer-songwriters combine protest, reflection and celebration. As individuals these musicians have performed at Glastonbury and Latitude Festivals, have been played on BBC 6 Music, and BBC Radio 4 and have over 450,000 Spotify plays. Coming together around the vibrant Leeds live music scene this exciting band is guaranteed to inspire and engage with their honest storytelling, joyful performance and first-class musicianship. BIG BAMBOO 6.15 – 8pm Big Bamboo plays old school hot dance music from the Caribbean islands and Brazil – Rumba, Choro, Mento, Beguine and Merengue – in an acoustic and improvised style reminiscent of New Orleans jazz. Richard Ormrod grew up with the rich, lyrical sound of early Caribbean music and has been playing in this style for thirty five years. Trombonist Will Osborne is passionate about early calypso and beguine and, together, they lead Big Bamboo on a tour through the first half of the 20th Century, across several seas, and through multiple musical traditions rooted in early jazz and hot dance. Music will be outside in Seven’s Courtyard, inside if wet.
