JazzLeeds - Nils Kavanagh Trio

Nils Kavanagh is a young pianist and composer of Irish and Danish heritage. Born in Sligo, a town that hosts its own Jazz Festival and Summer School, Kavanagh was drawn to the music through the Sligo Jazz Project and studied with local jazz pianists Kieran Quinn and Mark Murphy. He later studied with Scott Flanigan, an Irish jazz pianist with an international reputation. In 2022 Kavanagh won the inaugural Young Irish Jazz Musician of the Year Award. He subsequently moved to Cardiff to study Jazz Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where his piano tutors included Huw Warren and Elliot Galvin. It was in Cardiff that he formed a trio with bassist Marcus Baber and drummer Sam Green and in 2023 the group undertook a six date tour of Ireland, recording this album in Limerick at the end of the tour. Featuring Kavanagh’s compositions exclusively it’s an outstanding debut and the album has been featured on Soweto Kinch’s late night jazz show ‘Round Midnight on BBC Radio 3. Kavanagh is still based in Cardiff and divides his time between the UK and Ireland. UK based musicians with whom he has worked include saxophonist Tony Kofi, pianist / vocalist Liane Carroll and drummer / percussionist Paul Clarvis. He also leads an Irish piano trio featuring bassist Derek Whyte and drummer Miles Ronayne.

Rush Hour Jazz - ORB

ORB features original trio members: saxophonist, (plus various things to shake, rattle & blow!), Richard Ormrod & bassist / dog walker Paul Baxter, alongside special guests drummer John Arnesen and pianist Pete Rosser. Melodies inspired by Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman and Hermeto Pascoal, rub shoulders with original arrangements influenced by Charlie Haden & Mike Westbrook. We’ve seen ORB before – at the Cookridge Street Jazz Festival Tent and in the courtyard at Seven Arts. Catch them this time in the Seven Arts bar! Murder Inc. presents Murder Inc. Grab your detective team and come solve a murder mystery. Murder Inc. is the only murder mystery that YOU’RE an accessory to! You’ve never seen improv like this before. After sold out shows in Manchester, Murder Inc. Improv are thrilled to be in Leeds. A skilful cast with great rapport (Canal-st.co.uk), Murder Inc. is a comedy murder mystery that is made to order. The show is a wholly improvised crime story. The cast take your suggestions and weave a sordid tale for you that is pacy and packed with belly laughs (Cup of Beans Comedy). It’s your job to make your best guess of ‘whodunnit’ before the show is over and one winning detective team will take home a prize. ‘It is fascinating to see a whole web of story, woven before your eyes by this skilful cast’. Mewl Music - Mestisa presents: “¡Todas las Voces, Todas!”

Mestisa are a Latin American four-piece band based in Leeds. Founding Members are Barbara Kempf and Ana Luisa Muñoz of Chilean and Bolivian/German origins, who have built their repertoire over a twenty-five-year friendship. They are joined by their stalwart bass player, Mike Sandell, and their “new to the fold” drummer and percussionist, Matthew Shallcross. The concert is a celebration of song, featuring uplifting and moving renditions of a multitude of songs from around the world. Spring Sessions - Stan Smith and The North Country

A warm, acoustic-style afternoon of Alt-Country/Americana with Stan Smith and The North Country — musicians bringing heart, soul and raw storytelling to every chord and lyric. Stan Smith channels the spirit of the classic singer-songwriters of the ’60s and ’70s — inspired by legends but with his own unmistakable voice. The North Country (Warren Timmis, guitar and Matt Iadanza, bass) add depth and texture with lead guitar work and bass lines perfectly complementing Stan’s evocative songs, lifting each performance with emotion. Expect soulful originals and beloved covers, delivered with intimacy and authenticity — ideal for lovers of folk, country, Americana and honest songwriting. Originally hailing from Liverpool, Stan Smith is a singer-songwriter previously in the band Mulholland and the Rob Dylan Band; and now performs solo as well as with The North Country. Mewl Music - Chechelele World Music Choir & Paula Ryan

Traditional African rhythms and songs form the core part of the repertoire, in addition to songs from Bulgaria, Georgia, Macedonia, China, France, Finland, Israel, Hawaii, New Zealand, Columbia and the Amazon, plus a sprinkling of spirituals and gospel music. Sung in the original language, Chechele capture the spirit of the song using movement, actions, percussion, drumming, calling; and plenty of ululation. JazzLeeds - Adam Fairhall and Johnny Hunter play Mary Lou Williams

Mary Lou Williams was an American jazz pianist, arranger, and composer. She wrote hundreds of compositions and arrangements and recorded more than one hundred records. She s wrote and arranged for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and she was friend, mentor, and teacher to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie. Pianist Adam Fairhill and drummer Johnny Hunter performed for us a few years back exploring the repertoire and idiom of another neglected figure, the Trinidadian pianist Winifred Atwell.
