Summer Saturdays - Two Troubadours with Nick Hall & Jinder

Two great songwriters share their stories, their songs, and a stage. Presented in the ‘songwriters circle’ troubadours’ style. NICK HALL Nick Hall, one half of the acclaimed UK duo Plumhall, is known for his powerful vocals, intricate guitar work, and emotionally resonant songs. In recent times ick has sung onstage with Al Stewart and Fairport Convention, as well as receiving a host of music awards and glowing reviews in the music press. Whether in a theatre, arts centre, club, or festival setting, Nick Hall’s shows offer a journey through heartfelt folk, atmospheric Americana, and finely crafted songs that linger long after the final note. “Delivers a set of delightful songs.” – Yorkshire Post JINDER Jinder is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best known for his extensive catalogue of dark folk- and country-influenced solo work, including his 2019 Top 40 single, ‘Keep Me in Your Heart’, which features in the 2019 film Fisherman’s Friends and has been successfully covered by many other artists. Mewl Music - Joe Newberry and April Verch (USA/Canada)

Growing up, Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. Although they are on the road much of the year, the two musicians are fond of saying that they are rarely homesick, because their music means they always have a bit of home with them wherever they go. Ever since Newberry & Verch met they have shared a musical spark that few can match. Whether it is the power of two voices lifted in harmony, or the sound of traditional tunes calling people to get up and move, these two masters of tradition put on an unforgettable show. And, when their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm and those two voices become one, Joe Newberry and April Verch make folks remember why this music existed in the first place. Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing, Newberry is also a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter, with a legacy of music awards and critical accolades. In addition to his work with April Verch, he also plays in a duo with mandolin icon Mike Compton (they performed at Seven Arts back in 2017). Joe comes from a family of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a boy and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. Before launching her professional career, Verch was the first woman to win both the Canadian Grand Masters and Canadian Open Fiddling Championships.

JazzLeeds - Los Camaradas

The current line-up is about 15 people, including vocals, trumpet, trombones, flute, clarinet, saxes, bass, piano, timbales and other latin percussion. Band leader and coach is trombonist Jonny Enright. As a band what we love most is the way our audiences respond, moving to the music, sometimes with great skill, sometimes because they just can’t help but get on their feet. The afro-cuban rhythms of son montuno are just made for moving your hips. The Colombian dance rhythm of cumbia is infectious. There’s even a song about grinding Venezuelan coffee. Feel the tumbao rhythm of the bass guitar and the meaty riffs of the baritone sax. Clap along with the clave rhythm. Join in and sing the full-harmony coros in response to the passionate solo pregones. Appreciate the skill of the trombones, saxes, flute, tres guitar and timbales taking turns at improvised interpretation as the songs develop. Many of our tunes were made popular by the Fania All-Stars as skilled musicians moved from Latin America to New York and traditional folk styles became blended with jazz. There are songs by Eddie Palmieri, Hector Lavoe and Benny More as well as a couple of our own written in Yorkshire. A courtyard concert. Outside if nice weather, inside the venue if wet! Sounding Out - A Creative Workshop

A creative workshop where participants discover clarity, capability and curiosity for self-expression. Journeying through guided activities participants embody sound poetry, movement and voice, generating, shaping and ‘sounding out’ their thoughts at their own pace and comfort through individual and collaborative exploration. Chapel Allerton Arts Festival : Rush Hour Jazz - Raquel Alvaro with James Boyes

Raquel Álvaro is a Portuguese singer from Lisbon who learned her musical craft in her home city before coming to Leeds to study at the Leeds Conservatoire. While a student, she threw herself into the local jazz and world music scenes in the city and after she graduated, decided to remain in Leeds. Raquel leads from the front performing compositions by Tom Jobim/Jorge Ben/Joao Gilberto from the great Brazilian music songbook and taking inspiration from the great Brazilian female singers – Elis Regina/Elza Soares/Joyce/Flora Purim. Expect a mix of smooth and sultry bossa nova mixed with some fiery samba jazz. She’ll be supported by Leeds tenor sax player James Boyes who, rumour had it played at Ronnie Scott’s plus Prince Harry’s birthday party! You’ve never seen improv like this before. After sold out shows in Manchester, Murder Inc. Improv are thrilled to be in Leeds. A skilful cast with great rapport (Canal-st.co.uk), Murder Inc. is a comedy murder mystery that is made to order. The show is a wholly improvised crime story. The cast take your suggestions and weave a sordid tale for you that is pacy and packed with belly laughs (Cup of Beans Comedy). It’s your job to make your best guess of ‘whodunnit’ before the show is over and one winning detective team will take home a prize. ‘It is fascinating to see a whole web of story, woven before your eyes by this skilful cast’. Chapel Allerton Arts Festival : Jazz Leeds - Wild Flower Quintet: Celebrating 60 Years of Wayne Shorter

Wild Flower Quintet celebrates the 60th anniversary of Wayne Shorter’s classic recordings for Blue Note Records with an all-star line-up. Led by saxophonist Matt Anderson, the group plays original music inspired by Shorter’s sound and approach, alongside new arrangements of both his classic and lesser-known compositions. Their 2015 album Wild Flower was described by Selwyn Harris in Jazzwise as “Their own unique stamp on Shorter’s very personal repertoire… of a quality that resonates with its inspirational source… Enjoyably un-pretentious.” Born in the North Yorkshire Moors, the son of a music teacher, saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson has lived in London since 2015. Since his debut with Wild Flower, he has made three further albums with the Matt Anderson Quartet, with the latest Live at Leeds Jazz Festival released in 2024 to glowing reviews, including four stars in Jazzwise, and airplay on BBC Radio 3. Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital, Anderson has performed with artists/bands such as the Gareth Lockrane Big Band, Jamie Doe’s The Magic Lantern and Ivo Neame. Also in the front line is trumpeter Klara Devlin, who is fast emerging as one of the leading players of the new generation, appearing in the 2024 BBC Young Jazz Musician final and fronting her own band at venues across London.
