An Introduction to Deep Sky Astrophotography (ZOOM)

The true beauty of the universe is hidden from us. By day it is overwhelmed by light from the sun, by night it is often obscured by clouds, the moon or increasingly by man-made light pollution. Even on a perfect night the sheer distance and faintness of cosmic objects makes them effectively invisible. Astrophotography reveals these wonders.Recent advancements in both astrophotography equipment and software have significantly lowered costs and enhanced user-friendly features, making the attainment of high-quality imaging well within the grasp of the average amateur enthusiast.This presentation will provide an overview of the equipment, and processes required to take stunning images of Deep Sky Objects (DSOs) such as Galaxies, Super Nova remnants and Nebulae from your back garden. It will take you beyond landscape astrophotography.Max leads the Astro Imaging group for Guildford Astronomical Society. He achieved his “ARPS” by submitting the PhotoBook “Deep Sky Wonders – Images from Beyond the Solar System”. Many of his photographs are taken in his back garden in Bookham Surrey. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The Victorian South Coast

Trevor Beattie is a magic lantern showman and researcher based in Hove, Sussex. His shows use original lanterns and slides to re-create the popular optical entertainments of Victorian times. Before the invention of photography the slides were beautifully hand painted, often including mechanical movements and magical dissolve sequences. Later, many early photographs took the form of lantern slides which the Victorians used to produce educational, religious and comic series.The Victorian South Coast includes original lantern slides of life in the resorts of the south coast of England from 1860 to 1930. Many of these photos are unique. The show also includes some comic slides and stories.

Landscape: the Art of Seeing

Slawek was born and raised in Gdynia, northern Poland. In 2007 he moved to Brighton and the countryside around opened his eyes to landscape, especially the South Downs. He say that his first attempts at landscape in Sussex were frustrating. That’s because the traditional, wide angle, approach often doesn’t work here. The South Downs lack defined peaks and are mildly undulated. Consequently, wide angles tends to push away what’s their most distinct features. Which are their curves. Subsequently he discovered that longer focal lengths and more abstract frames showcased the South Downs better. Landscape: the Art of Seeing includes a look at composition, anticipation and imagination.

My Journey into Theatre Photography (ZOOM)

Cat is a freelance photographer based in Hertfordshire who specialises in theatre, portraits, events and schools photography. She has been a keen amateur photographer for most of her life and has been a full time photographer since 2023. She is an active camera club member and has been giving talks and judging photographic competitions for the Chilterns Association of Camera Clubs since 2016. In this talk she will Cat will take us on a trip through her adventures in theatre photography from documenting young performers at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the 1990s to shooting vintage Hollywood portraits for Sunset Boulevard Including the equipment she uses and images from publicity shoots, rehearsals and performances.

Observations

Shoreham based Steve Boyle has been taking photographs for 40 years, beginning with a love for black and white darkroom work. His work has been widely exhibited in the UK and abroad. He was President of Brighton and Hove Camera Club for 3 years and an invited member of the London Salon of Photography. Steve has also been a member of the Royal Photographic Society Distinctions team for 20 years.He mainly sees himself as a street photographer but prefers to follow his own instincts rather than stick to any rigid rules.
