// Live Poetry feat Rosy Carrick and Louise Machen

Friday 7th August 7pm £5 An evening of poetry from Rosy Carrick and Louise Machen. Doors will be open from 7pm and refreshments will be available. Tickets £5 in advance. Rosy Carrick is the author of two poetry collections: Chokey (2018) and I LOVE (2025). Rosy's theatre debut Passionate Machine won the Best New Play award at Brighton Fringe and the Infallibles Award for Theatrical Excellence at Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, before touring internationally. Her critically acclaimed second play Musclebound toured from 2024 to 2025. Rosy has a PhD on the poetry of Vladimir Mayakovsky and has released two collections of his work in translation . Between 2022 and 2024, she co-wrote ZA/UM Studio's cursed – and subsequently cancelled – spin-off to the explosively successful videogame Disco Elysium . This year, Rosy's debut short film Annie & Bill won 1st Prize (Jury Award) in the Calderdale Shorts Category at Hebden Bridge Film Festival 2026, and was also part of the official 2026 selection for Sheffield DocFest, Buxton Short Film Festival and Guernsey Film Festival. "Absolutely Brilliant!" – Dawn French Louise Machen is a Manchester-based poet and educator who holds an MA in Creative Writing from The University of Manchester. Louise’s collaborative pamphlet, The Words of Others , is published with Hedgehog Press and her Forward-Prize nominated debut collection, I Am Not Light , is published with Black Bough Poetry.

Using her own technique of combining chicken-wire, brown tape, wool, natural fabrics and found materials, Jo will show participants how to make lightweight, flexible masks. Mask makers will be using glue guns, sewing, felting, hand tools and other techniques. Put together a mask that you can use in your own performance or just for fun. Age 16+ Crafting supplies kindly donated by local wool companies.

Now the solstice is over and the nights are starting to grow longer, come and meet the legendary Krampus himself! He is the horned, fearsome companion of St Nicholas, and the punisher of the naughty people. Join us for a dark yet informative talk and interactive conversation with Laurence Mitchell of Whitby Krampus Run, exploring how he and his horned companion, Elaine Edmunds, summoned this Alpine tradition all the way to Whitby. Blending history, humour, and a touch of mischief, the talk uncovers how Krampus has been reimagined with both respect and playful rebellion. If you have been incredibly bad this year, this is your chance to be chased by Krampus… come if you dare.

Saturday 22nd August 1.30-4pm PWYC £15/20/25 Join illustrator, naturalist and Calder Valley local Melissa Davie (Hey Nature) for a Nature Notebooking session from In A Land Studios, Hebden Bridge. Together, we'll take a short walk and explore Calderdale's landscape through the eyes of a naturalist. Mel will invite you to observe the plants around us, to slow down, look closely and "get to know" them. We will find a spot to sit, create sketches and record our observations in the style of field notes in our Nature notebooks. Then, back at the studio, there will be time to reflect on our observations, explore botanical reference materials and develop our artwork. No drawing experience is necessary, just curiosity and an interest in Nature! Please bring a notebook, your pencil case and preferred art supplies (eg. watercolour palette if you have one!), waterproofs and suitable footwear for walking. Hand lenses, reference books and a selection of materials will also be available for us to use.

// Wilde Volk Life Drawing from

Saturday 29th August 1-3pm £10/12 Join artists and models Franchesca Cluney and Jenni Mac for an immersive drawing session inspired by Wilde Volk ritual traditions of Northern and Eastern Europe. In this unique session, Frankie and Jenni will embody the Wilde Volk archetypes through the use of masks drawn from historical and esoteric practices. Through mask, pose, and movement, shifting between stillness and dance, figures will emerge, invoking presence, transformation, and the unseen. Participants are invited to observe and draw as these forms unfold, capturing gesture, energy, and atmosphere. The session will be facilitated by Sooxanne Rolfe and accompanied by an evocative soundscape composed by the Spirit of Gravity, which uses field recordings from Sooxanne's visits to the ritual sites, creating a deeply immersive and sensory environment.

Sunday 6th September 1 - 3pm £5.00 This is a practical making space, where you will have time to hang out with other zinesters and crack on with the zine / collage / thing you’re already making or that you’re waiting to make. Each session will work to a loose theme, but you’re also welcome to come and work on your own zine. Magazines, paper, scissors and glue will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own kit too. There will be a collection of zines for you to pursue for inspiration and reference. Zine culture is DIY / DIWO based, and we will informally share knowledge, methods and techniques for designing, crafting and printing zines. There will be snacks, music and things to cut out, glue and craft. Feel free to bring a zine / indy publication that inspires you to share. We will start the session with some introductions and a sharing of favourite zines / publications.

// Field & Folk: Creating in and with the land

Field & Folk is a year-long series of four seasonal workshops exploring connection to landscape through foraging, natural materials, and creative practice. Taking place at the turning points of the year, each session invites you to step outside, gather from the land, and transform what you find into artwork. Working with Michaela Lesayova and Bryony Good we will walk, forage, and create. You’ll learn how to responsibly gather natural materials, how to work with seasonal plants and found resources, and how to turn them into inks, pigments, and textures for making. Each workshop responds to the unique character of the season, from the wild abundance of summer to the quiet, pared-back palette of winter. The first half of the workshop is spent outside in a different location each workshop, gathering stories and foraging materials. Bryony will share local folktales with everyone as we spend time absorbing a sense of the place. The second half is spent in the studio making and creating using the materials gathered. You will get a chance to learn how to make natural inks, create cyanotypes and write creatively responding to your sense of place. These sessions are open to everyone. No prior experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to explore. Whether you come for one workshop or journey through all four, you’ll develop new creative skills while building a deeper, more personal relationship with the landscape around you.
