A new monthly spoken word evening hosted by Welsh poet Rob Edwards at the Puzzle Hall Community Pub. Poetry. Comedy. Storytelling. Bardic ramblings. Beautiful madness. 10 minute performance slots. All voices welcome — first timers and seasoned performers alike. The first ever Gobbledegook lands on Tuesday 21st July, 8 — 10 pm, and continues every 3rd Tuesday of the month.Come along and help start something special.

Jazz Night with Archipelago

Archipelago formed in Newcastle/Gateshead in 2016 and consists of: Faye MacCalman (Composer, Saxophone, Clarinet, Synth, Vocals) John Pope (Bass, Effects) Christian Alderson (Drums, Percussion) Archipelago’s uncompromising ability to fit into one genre is a raw, fully charged musical experience. Their last album ‘Echoes To The Sky’ received 4 **** on its release and has been described as “original, evocative and at times, haunting music” by Kevin Le Gendre on BBC Radio 3. Supported by “BBC Introducing” and selected as “a highlight” from Latitude Festival for Tom Robinson’s BBC6 Music show, they were described as a “truly remarkable unit” by NARC Magazine. Faye MacCalman takes influence from artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Don Cherry to PJ Harvey, creating shimmering waves of sound that change rapidly from one song to the next, as Archipelago move between instruments and electronic effects that create illusions of several musicians, before peeling back to their raw trio form.

The trio will be performing music inspired by, amongst others, Sound Garden, Acoustic Ladyland, Tom Waits, Ornette Coleman….et al. Tom Townsend, drumsPete Williams, tenor saxophone,Paul Baxter, electric & double bass The music will be coalescing in a jazz-rock manifestation, reminiscent of Back Door but with a few extra bits and pieces! Trains:If you’re travelling towards Halifax / Bradford / Leeds, the last train leaves Sowerby Bridge at 00.03. If you’re travelling up the Calder Valley, and onwards to Manchester, the last train leaves Sowerby Bridge at 23.22. Please allow 15 minutes to walk from the pub to the station, and please check, on the day of travel, that the times have not changed, or that strike actions are being planned. Bus:There’s a 579 bus to Halifax that leaves Station Road at 23.48, just a few minutes’ walk from the Pub, however, give yourself plenty of time, as it’s the last bus, it can be pretty sharp in setting off.

Jeffrey Alexander & The Heavy Lidders + Fire Tower 4

Philadelphian psychonaught, JEFFREY ALEXANDER may very well be one of the most quietly prolific figures in modern psychedelic music. Since the 90’s in bands such Iditarod, Black Forest/Black Sea, Dire Wolves and now THE HEAVY LIDDERS he has fearlessly explored the outer and inner realms of psych. In his new group The Heavy Lidders Jeffrey and the band take inspiration from folk, jazz and rock in a playful and exploratory way creating music which has drive and groove but plenty of space for improvisation. “Quietly transcendent, deep and cosmically curious” – Psychedelic Scene ‘Jammed-up improvisations that have substance as well as sense and sensibility.
