Introduction to Flower Casting

Flower casting, or botanical bas-relief, is an artistic technique where flowers and plants are pressed into a clay mold to capture their intricate details, and then plaster is poured over this mold to create a raised relief cast. The process involves arranging delicate plant material on wet clay, removing the plants after they've left an imprint, and then pouring plaster to form a permanent keepsake. These casts can be left plain or painted to highlight the captured textures and patterns, preserving ephemeral beauty in a tangible, long-lasting form. Create your own unique plaster cast tile using clay and plaster. You will be working with seasonal plants, natural materials, seed pods impressing images onto clay and using plaster to create the cast. All materials are included.

Cyanotype Printing

Have a go at cyanotype printing discovering one of the oldest and most beautiful forms of photographic printing. Cyanotype is a 19th-century process that produces distinctive blueprints using only sunlight and simple chemistry — a perfect mix of art and science. Experimenting with textures, natural materials, layering and composition. You’ll learn how to prepare your materials, arrange your designs and expose your work to UV light to develop rich Prussian blue tones. This workshop is designed for all levels, relaxed, hands-on, and focused on experimentation. You’ll come away with a finished set of prints, as well as the confidence to continue printing cyanotypes at home. All materials provided.

Appliqué with Deborah Dorward

We're very excited to have Deborah Dorward author of 'Stitches of Time' teaching her wonderful style of Appliqué here at Cowslip once again. She draws inspiration from antique quilts and is especially inspired by Folk Art quilts and Cross Stitch wall hangings. She prefers to work with reproduction fabrics as she enjoys the history and the senses of “being here before” that speaks to her but likes to choose brighter more interesting prints. Hand quilting is a particular passion of hers and she tries to hand quilt all her quilts when possible as she prefers the softness hand quilting gives to a quilt. You can choose to work on any of her patterns (pattern cost is payable to Deborah on the day) or you can choose any project from her book, please let us know which project you would like to do so that Deborah can bring the pattern/templates. She will also have several new quilts to choose from. Please bring a hand sewing kit

Introduction to Patchwork and Quilting Part 1

An introduction to using a rotary cutter and machine piecing which speeds up the process of quilt making, this still keeps the character of the quilt, discussion about choosing colours, demonstration of simple hand quilting or ties, It is hard to finish a quilt in a day but this will be a good introduction and you should get well on with a project. This will be a day to learn the basic techniques of cutting and simple design, using either just squares or triangles as well. I will explain how to make templates for hand stitching but also the use of rotary cutter and machine piecing using ¼” foot which speeds up the process. You will start piecing and have a plan of how to finish and how to quilt, as it is impossible to finish in the day. The main thing is to have fun… not stress, possibly use up or incorporate old fabrics or children’s dresses. Basic explanation of quilting threads and stitches, will also explain /demo bonded appliqué. Patchwork and Quilting Part 2

This will be a follow on from beginners where we will move on to triangles and quick piecing techniques to help you achieve more advanced designs, as always it is the play with colour and design that makes the quilt and I will explain how I try to blend and shade quilts without using complicated designs. It is always possible to sew by hand but I find most students prefer to use their 1/4” foot, which is even more helpful and important when sewing triangles, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy! Students requirements Basic sewing kit to include: paper and fabric scissors, pins, sewing threads to match or grey or colour to blend with all, for piecing, also to match your appliqué fabric Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, Ruler (Omnigrid type) if you have to bring with you, if not you can borrow or purchase in our shop with 10% discount if you buy all three. NOT HEAVY LINEN OR VELVET AS IT IS HARD TO SEW.

Worry Free at Cowslip 2026

Petra and Juud will return next September and offer a 4 day workshop/retreat. So... what to expect from this Worry Free at Cowslip? On Monday September 14th you can settle in (this is a non tutored day so you're left to your own devices), catch up and breathe in that lovely Cornwall Air in a heavenly place for us quilters. You can even start sewing in the workshop space. From Tuesday September 15th to Friday 18th. Petra and Judd will have lots of new and old projects for you to work on as well as plenty of demonstrated techniques, help and advice with your ongoing work. Printing with Tetra Pak cartons

This eco-friendly method repurposes cartons for artistic prints. Using a sharp tool like an etching needle or a craft knife to score into the carton's surface, creates lines that will hold ink.The shiny, silver surface can be peeled away or scratched off to expose the brown card beneath, creating different tones.Ink is applied to the plate and wiped away from the surface so it remains only in the incised lines and textures. The plate is then pressed onto paper. A really easy way to create a plate to print and recycle too. All materials are included.

We 3 Sheep…

A wool appliqué workshop with Sue Maddox We 3 Sheep is a one day wool appliqué workshop, suitable for those with previous experience or for confident stitchers. Wool appliqué using freezer paper, is an easy technique to learn & it is always fun to play with the beautiful colours of over dyed wools available from Cowslip. This wool piece follows a Christmas theme, but could so easily be adapted to suit any season. It could become a wall hanging, table runner or simply be laid over a box or across a chair back. You are welcome to make yours exactly like mine or take ideas from it & make it your own. You may have wools & fabrics at home that you would like to use, please bring them along. They will all look perfectly lovely. There will also be kits with similar wools & linen available to pre-order from Cowslip. The day will no doubt be a busy one, but a whole lot of fun as well! REQUIREMENTS: Pattern is included Background…approx 29”x14”. This can be any fabric of your choice, wool, linen, flannel, cotton etc. I used an over dyed BlackBerry Primitive linen in ‘Denim’ colour from Cowslip. The final piece will measure approx 271/2” x 13” Wools . Scallops, top & bottom…27”x 3”. If you don’t have a long enough piece of wool, it is very easy to butt shorter lengths of wool together & it doesn’t have to be all the same colour. For mine I used Blackberry Primitives ‘Indigo’ wool. . Sheep …each sheep can be cut from a piece 7”x 5”.

An English Country Garden

Sew a colourful flower border filled with lavender, delphiniums, hollyhocks, roses, sweet peas, etc. I will demonstrate stitches for these flowers and will also include some silk ribbon techniques I will make kits up which will include two projects. The first will be a sampler full of flowers which can be made into a little needle case. The second project will be a larger embroidery full of flowers from an English country garden. All fabrics for the two projects will be provided plus templates and instructions This time I am not including any threads in the kits so please bring your own. I suggest stranded and Perle threads of various weights and in a variety of shades. However, if you are not sure about threads I will be bringing lots of threads including some silk ribbon and you are very welcome to try them out during the day, before you buy any more. Kits cost £10 payable to me on the day

Margaret Sampson George Appliqué

We are all delighted to have Margaret back teaching more of her amazing appliqué. This workshop will cover paper piecing, needle-turn appliqué and broderie Perse. You can work on any of Marg's projects from her book or others you may know about. She is having an exhibition whilst here at Cowslip so there will be plenty to choose from! We're very excited to have Margaret back with her amazing quilts from her beautiful book 'Take an Element' and also some new projects she has been working on too. Margaret has a very different way of working Appliqués and Broderie Persé from her unique and playful understanding of the possibilities within every piece of fabric. Her style of teaching is to bring out the designer in each student, so although she may suggest a project to work on, her aim is to give you the guidance and freedom to develop your own ideas and creations taking inspiration from her work. Margaret’s requirement lists are fairly loose! For the basics: For needle-turn Appliqué you require Freezer paper Sharp scissors small and medium Scissors for paper cutting Lead pencil and sharpener. Frixion pen or Appliqué pencil I use size 11 large-eye needles to Appliqué but you use what suits you! Size 9 or 10 for basting. I use basic beige ,cream ,and greeny grey thread to Appliqué. Again , use what makes you comfortable. I use Aurifil thread but that's a personal preference.

Slow Stitching & Altered Textiles – Tweed Jacket

Angela will encourage students to adopt a relaxed, free style of working, applying tiny scraps of vintage wool fabrics, combined with stitch techniques, to create a unique, wearable textile art piece. Students are encouraged to bring a wool jacket, coat or favourite piece of knitwear that has some damage, moth holes or simply needs a revamp. Or, they can acquire a piece from a charity shop. There is the option to also reline your item with Angela’s support. Students will need to bring their own cotton fabric. Or, the lining can be the art piece, the choice is yours! We will start the day with a brief introduction and examples of Angela’s work, aiming to inspire. This will be followed by a quick exercise to get used to working free form, without a hoop, being instinctive with placement of fragments and stitch lines. We then move on to the main piece. Each student will be provided with a vintage wool project pack to use within their work. A basket of free scraps will also be available. Antique French embroidery thread will also be provided. In addition, Angela will provide a selection of other vintage and antique textile goodies available for purchase.
