Lime And Soda Jelly Roll Quilt

If you find choosing fabrics difficult then this is the quilt for you. You just need to buy a black and white jelly roll (Jo has these ready in the shop for you), some white background fabric and then you choose the added background colour. We chose lime but we have seen this quilt made up using many different colours – pink, aqua, blue - and all look great and quite different. The quilt is basically a nine patch block which is then re-cut to make these blocks. A fun technique which looks complex but is really quite simple. SUITABLE FOR CONFIDENT BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATE QUILTERS REQUIREMENTS Sewing machine with full bobbin Normal sewing kit Rotary cutting equipment Fabric requirements for the Lime & Soda quilt (62in x 62in): one black and white jelly roll (or 40 2½in x 42in strips) 1.25m white background fabric (Fabric A) 1.25m your chosen colour background fabric – lime in our quilt (Fabric B) 0.5m binding fabric (not needed on day) Getting ahead before class: I know many will want to cut some background fabric before class as it does save time. This is not essential and if you would prefer to cut the background fabric on the day that is fine. If you would like to cut before class then these are the cutting instructions for both Fabric A and B background fabrics. Fabric A and Fabric B – Cut the same from each Cut three 6½in strips across the width of fabric and cut these into sixteen 6½in squares.

If you wish you can do a few embroidery blocks which you will have time to complete between your two classes. To the Lighthouse

This two day workshop celebrates all things nautical. We will create a fun narrative around the themes of a lighthouse/sea creatures/boats/mermaids which will inhabit a mysterious seascape. The workshop is all about imaginative use of fabrics, stitch, collage and appliqué techniques. As well as your scrap bag do bring any dyeing/stitch experiments along as they may come in useful. There will be plenty of help and advise along the way and templates for those nervous of design. STUDENT REQUIREMENTS Sewing Machine with manual, accessories and stitches guide A good selection of coloured threads (bearing in mind the subject matter). Scrap bag of fabrics (natural fibres are good and not too heavy weight).Hopefully to swap and share. Scissors A hand sewing kit: pins, needle, thread, and a few silks for any finishing touches. Some Bondaweb or Heatbond. There will be some available to purchase if needed. Reference materials, if you have something specific in mind do bring a sketch, a reference book or a printout of your photo along. I do not supply a Kit as such for my courses but can supply some fabric bundles consisting of shibori dyed cotton/linens as well as other fabrics appropriate to the subject matter (available at a cost of £10 to the tutor on the day). If you have any samples from dyeing workshops these would also be relevant. I will supply participants with the backing at no extra charge.

Autumn & Christmas Journals

A wonderful opportunity to spend two days making a journal for Christmas. These would make a lovely gift for someone or yourself. You could record all your Christmas memories that could be used year after year. Your journal could be made from recycled materials or completely new, there are no rules, so dig into your stash. You will be shown how to select and organise your papers, create a cover and sew in your signature. You can then decorate your unique journal. Student requirements: There is a choice of two sizes 9 x 6.25 or 6.25 x 4.5 inches.I will supply the base for your cover and I will have paper packs available to purchase on the day.Any type of paper - wrapping paper, book pages (text and pictures), music, scrapbooking paper pads, plain, lined and grid. English Flexible Framing (EFF) with Jenny Bear

This is Jenny’s somewhat irreverent name for English Medallion or English Frame quilts that often started out with no overall plan in mind. There is an excellent and well-researched chapter about them in Quilt Treasures 1995, a book documenting a search by The Quilters’ Guild for quilts and other domestic textile articles that demonstrated the historic character and artistic skills of ordinary British folk. The book is an absolute treasure. Please bring it, if you have it, to Jenny’s workshops (full reference given below). She will be bringing, as many as she can carry, several examples of quilts of this nature. The workshops are designed to be flexible as per the nature of the quilts she will bring. Patterns (payable to Jenny on the day) will be available for, at least: Charlotte Thornton of Mirfield, a scaled-down version of the cover girl quilt in Quilt Treasures and made by one of the Thornton sisters (Hannah, Elizabeth, Sussanah and Margaret). Charlotte is fictitious but the name was coined to honour Jenny’s friend in the USA (Charli Thompson) who gave her the antique border fabric that she used in her interpretation of the quilt. £15 Mary Armitage in Cumbria, a quilt combining elements from the Mary Armitage Coverlet of 1787 (in the collection of The Quilter’s Guild) and the Grove Documentation Quilt (a name coined by Di Ford Hall for the double-sided coverlet in Quilt Treasures pp 34-35).

Come along for 3 whole days to relax and de-stress. Either make something simple, or finish that Christmas project that’s been in the pending pile for however…..long! STUDENT REQUIREMENTS A project that you wish to finish/continue (bring along any drawings part finished work and fabric) Fabrics for making a small throw or tablecloth, possibly including angels or holly around the edge, using bondaweb for appliqué. Perhaps make a large floor cushion, or tablecloth with matching napkins with appliqué, or perhaps a last minute stocking or hot water bottle cover! Tracing paper/2 rolled sheets of graph paper/some plain paper Basic sewing kit, to include paper and fabric scissors Card or template plastic/1 piece of fine sandpaper or drawing board Pin/Cork/polystyrene board is very helpful for pinning out blocks and transporting Pens/pencils/coloured pencils/ruler Selection of pre-washed Christmassy-type or warm and cosy winter fabrics, colours to suit student, ie checks, plaids, decorative threads, beads/buttons. If wishing to make a throw or table cloth you might want enough matching fabric for the border (approx 2m) and you could use fleece for the backing which is quick and easy to quilt and you don’t have to use wadding!
