Walking Roman Cirencester

Corinium Museum, in collaboration with Cotswold Heritage Walks, is excited to offer a series of historic walking tours. The event will be led by archaeologist, Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes, former Head of Collections at Corinium Museum, who has begun a new venture combining her two great passions archaeology and walking! Head out with Alison to explore what lies beneath your feet revealing the ancient town of Roman Corinium, parts of the wall and impressive amphitheatre. After a short break for refreshments, Alison will lead a tour of Corinium Museum to discover the treasures revealed on the walk. With each step you will connect with the historic landscape and gain a unique insight as you walk and talk along the way. With 20 years’ experience researching and curating the collection you will be in expert hands as Alison shares her passion and unique knowledge of Roman Corinium. This half-day event will comprise of a two-hour leisurely walking tour of the town and amphitheatre, entry to the Museum with refreshments, followed by a guided tour of the award-winning Roman galleries. Cotswold Archaeology’s Mick Aston Annual Lecture 2026

Hidden Kingdoms: exploring South-West Britain in the early medieval period – Professor Stephen Rippon, University of Exeter Britain ceasing to be part of the Roman Empire was one of the most formative episodes in our history, yet research on Late Antique Britain has traditionally privileged eastern ‘Anglo-Saxon England’ over the so-called western ‘Celtic fringe’. This project will redress this imbalance by exploring the landscape, communities, and material culture of the ‘hidden kingdoms’ of South-Western Britain (such as ‘Dumnonia’) that existed from the 5th-mid 7th centuries, whilst avoiding creating a new binary division between east and west through studying the interactions between these British regions and communities with an emerging Anglo-Saxon identity to the east. Corinium Afternoons: The Iron Age Silver Coin Hoard

A spectacular silver coin hoard has just emerged from Cotswold soil – the first Iron Age coin hoard in the museum’s collection. It contains more than 160 coins dating to the late Iron Age, and displays a variety of stunning abstract designs attributed to the Dobunni tribe. There is rarely any wording on Iron Age coins, so what messages do they carry? Join Collections Engagement Officer James Harris to hear the story of how this important treasure was found and saved for the public and to see if we can decode some of the hidden meanings behind the images. Corinium Museum members can get free tickets by entering the special discount code when they check out. An Evening with Ben Miller Fundraiser

Join the Friends of Corinium Museum for an evening with best-selling author, actor and director Ben Miller, discussing his new thriller “A Very Dangerous Pursuit” with historian and broadcaster Dave Musgrove in the Hare Gallery of the Corinium Museum. Drinks will be available on arrival, from 6:30pm. The Q&A session will start at 7pm and Ben has kindly agreed to stay afterwards to sign copies of this new novel. Friends tickets: £15 Non-members: £20 All proceeds support the conservation of the newly acquired Iron Age Coin Hoard of more than 109 silver Dobunni coins and rare miniature shield and spearhead votives. Evening Lecture: Stonelands with Fiona Robertson

From the folkloric stone circles of the Land’s End peninsula to the windswept giants of Orkney and the Isle of Lewis, Britain is full of prehistoric standing stones. Sharing photos from her many megalith-hunting trips, Fiona Robertson speculates about the motivations of the ancient builders as well as exploring the profound appeal these places still exert on us today, from their enchanting legends to the way they act as metaphors for human strength and endurance. She talks about her personal story, discussing how these incredible survivals from prehistory can be a source of joy, inspiration and even solace, connecting us to the landscape and the past. Fiona Robertson is a writer, editor and committed megalith enthusiast, who loves to drag her family all over the country in search of standing stones. She is the author of Stone Lands (a Telegraphand Waterstones best book of 2025). In a previous life, she was the Publisher of Watkins, where she enjoyed commissioning books that leaned into her interests in folklore, folk tales, nature writing and, of course, standing stones. Making Botanical Prints Workshop: What secrets can plants whisper to us from history

Children will explore the medium of printer’s ink to create intricate prints of plants and plant scenes. When they have finished their compositions, they will turn their efforts to making an album to house their prints. They may even choose to write the botanical, or Latin names alongside the print completing the look of an antique book of specimens. During the workshop, the instructor will also talk about the importance of plants in the archaeological record and what the presence of certain types of plants can tell archaeologists.

Medieval Re-enactment Day: The Company of Blood and Gold

Join the Company of Blood and Gold for a day of learning and laughter as they provide a glimpse into the ordinary people of the medieval period. Spanning the 1300-1400s, they bring to life the clothing, armour and skills of knights, professionals, and craftspeople. Explore the connections between archaeology and nature through talks and demonstrations on natural fibres, stonemasonry, medieval food and seasonings, medicine and more. Learn about how flax and sheep’s wool are turned into fabulous fabrics, what a Witchmark is and how it’s made, the flavours and ingredients of medieval cooking, how to play medieval board games, what the life and kit of a knight involves, and even how to extract an arrow from a person’s skull. Mini Votives Workshop

In the Iron Age it was common to make small decorated versions of weapons such as spears and shields. In this workshop we will learn more about Iron Age culture as well as the dazzling hoard found near Cirencester that contains more than 100 silver coins as well as several of these mysterious votives. Then, have a go at making your own votives!
