Making Botanical Prints Workshop: What secrets can plants whisper to us from history

Children will explore the medium of printer’s ink to create intricate prints of plants and plant scenes. When they have finished their compositions, they will turn their efforts to making an album to house their prints. They may even choose to write the botanical, or Latin names alongside the print completing the look of an antique book of specimens. During the workshop, the instructor will also talk about the importance of plants in the archaeological record and what the presence of certain types of plants can tell archaeologists.

Join Ian Thomas as he discusses the Roman archaeology of the town and key discoveries that point to this being one of the most vibrant and wealthy towns in Roman Britain. Medieval Re-enactment Day: The Company of Blood and Gold

Join the Company of Blood and Gold for a day of learning and laughter as they provide a glimpse into the ordinary people of the medieval period. Spanning the 1300-1400s, they bring to life the clothing, armour and skills of knights, professionals, and craftspeople. Explore the connections between archaeology and nature through talks and demonstrations on natural fibres, stonemasonry, medieval food and seasonings, medicine and more. Learn about how flax and sheep’s wool are turned into fabulous fabrics, what a Witchmark is and how it’s made, the flavours and ingredients of medieval cooking, how to play medieval board games, what the life and kit of a knight involves, and even how to extract an arrow from a person’s skull. Included within normal admission.

In the Iron Age it was common to make small decorated versions of weapons such as spears and shields. In this workshop we will learn more about Iron Age culture as well as the dazzling hoard found near Cirencester that contains more than 100 silver coins as well as several of these mysterious votives. Corinium Afternoons: Time Team Excavations in the Cotswolds (1997 to 2024)

For more than 30 years, Time Team has undertaken so many excavations all over Britain, uncovering countless stories of the lives of people in the past along the way. We are lucky enough to have five sites in the Cotswolds where Time Team excavated. In this talk we will have a look at what happens to these sites once the cameras stop rolling and see which treasures didn’t make the final cut. Craft a Prehistoric Axe Head Workshop

Children will learn all about the use, materials and creation methods for early axe heads. They will get to handle reproduction axe heads representing thousands of years of history and learn important archaeological terms such as ‘seriation’. After a tour of the Prehistory Gallery, the children will use a special quick-set material to mould a set of axe heads that they can take home and display.

Walking Roman Cirencester

Corinium Museum, in collaboration with Cotswold Heritage Walks, is excited to offer a series of historic walking tours. The event will be led by archaeologist, Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes, former Head of Collections at Corinium Museum, who has begun a new venture combining her two great passions archaeology and walking! Head out with Alison to explore what lies beneath your feet revealing the ancient town of Roman Corinium, parts of the wall and impressive amphitheatre. After a short break for refreshments, Alison will lead a tour of Corinium Museum to discover the treasures revealed on the walk. With each step you will connect with the historic landscape and gain a unique insight as you walk and talk along the way. With 20 years’ experience researching and curating the collection you will be in expert hands as Alison shares her passion and unique knowledge of Roman Corinium. This half-day event will comprise of a two-hour leisurely walking tour of the town and amphitheatre, entry to the Museum with refreshments, followed by a guided tour of the award-winning Roman galleries. Wear good footwear as mostly flat but some uneven terrain. Walk experience lasts approx. 2 hours, museum visit lasts approx. 1 hour. Booking recommended Limited to 12 people
