In the Iron Age it was common to make small decorated versions of weapons such as spears and shields. In this workshop we will learn more about Iron Age culture as well as the dazzling hoard found near Cirencester that contains more than 100 silver coins as well as several of these mysterious votives. Then, have a go at making your own votives!

Corinium Museum, in collaboration with Cotswold Heritage Walks, is excited to offer a series of historic walking tours. The event will be led by archaeologist, Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes, former Head of Collections at Corinium Museum, who has begun a new venture combining her two great passions archaeology and walking! Head out with Alison to explore what lies beneath your feet revealing the ancient town of Roman Corinium, parts of the wall and impressive amphitheatre. After a short break for refreshments, Alison will lead a tour of Corinium Museum to discover the treasures revealed on the walk. With each step you will connect with the historic landscape and gain a unique insight as you walk and talk along the way. With 20 years’ experience researching and curating the collection you will be in expert hands as Alison shares her passion and unique knowledge of Roman Corinium. This half-day event will comprise of a two-hour leisurely walking tour of the town and amphitheatre, entry to the Museum with refreshments, followed by a guided tour of the award-winning Roman galleries. Wear good footwear as mostly flat but some uneven terrain. Walk experience lasts approx. 2 hours, museum visit lasts approx. 1 hour. Booking recommended Limited to 12 people

Hidden Kingdoms: exploring South-West Britain in the early medieval period – Professor Stephen Rippon, University of Exeter Britain ceasing to be part of the Roman Empire was one of the most formative episodes in our history, yet research on Late Antique Britain has traditionally privileged eastern ‘Anglo-Saxon England’ over the so-called western ‘Celtic fringe’. This project will redress this imbalance by exploring the landscape, communities, and material culture of the ‘hidden kingdoms’ of South-Western Britain (such as ‘Dumnonia’) that existed from the 5th-mid 7th centuries, whilst avoiding creating a new binary division between east and west through studying the interactions between these British regions and communities with an emerging Anglo-Saxon identity to the east. Corinium Afternoons: The Iron Age Silver Coin Hoard

A spectacular silver coin hoard has just emerged from Cotswold soil – the first Iron Age coin hoard in the museum’s collection. It contains more than 160 coins dating to the late Iron Age, and displays a variety of stunning abstract designs attributed to the Dobunni tribe. There is rarely any wording on Iron Age coins, so what messages do they carry? Join Collections Engagement Officer James Harris to hear the story of how this important treasure was found and saved for the public and to see if we can decode some of the hidden meanings behind the images. Corinium Museum members can get free tickets by entering the special discount code when they check out.
