COLOUR: The Palette of S.J. Peploe

This summer in Kirkcudbright Galleries, one of Scotland’s most important and best loved artists Samuel J. Peploe: COLOUR The Palette of S.J. Peploe Open  6 June – 4 October 2026 Over 60 paintings by this wonderful artist, who took such immense pleasure in the use of colour, who observed with such care and painted with such fluent talent,  will be gathered for Kirkcudbright Galleries 2026 Summer Exhibition,  entrance free. S.J. Peploe  (1871-1935),  celebrated worldwide as one of the leading Scottish Colourists,  was as skilled at portraits and landscapes as his much admired and hugely popular still life paintings. His use of colour was breath-taking.  His intense personal response to place,  to form, is clear in every painting. Like all great artists he absorbed from his peers and developed his own unique touch.  His life and work will be examined in this exceptional exhibition,  which brings together works from national collections and a great many from private collections never before seen in public. He is the grandson of the Scottish Colourist Samuel John Peploe (1871–1935), one of the most important figures in early 20th-century British painting. Guy Peploe is widely recognised as a leading authority on the Scottish Colourists. He has curated several exhibitions of S. J. Peploe’s work and has published several important monographs, drawing on privileged access to family archives and private collections. His writing and curatorial work have contributed significantly to the scholarship and public understanding of his grandfather’s legacy, placing S. J. Peploe firmly within the narrative of British and European modernism.

Joshua Miles: Local Light

Kirkcudbright Galleries are delighted to welcome a solo exhibition by Joshua Miles: ‘Local Light’ Location: Mitchell Gallery, Kirkcudbright Galleries. (Level 3) Dates: 4th July – 18th October 2026 Artwork for sale in this exhibition Mitchell Gallery opening times: Monday – Saturday: 10am – 4:30pm Sundays: 11:30 – 4:30pm Joshua Miles was born in the Western Cape in South Africa in 1967. After early schooling in Swellendam he completed high school in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. He then went on to study at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town where he received the Michaelis prize for best student in his final year. Joshua is one of those rare artists who has managed to make a living solely from his art. He spent many years painting with oils on canvas but his passion has always been with reduction block printmaking. His influences in printmaking started at a young age watching his aunt Elsa Miles, artist and art historian, doing woodcuts and then later studying under Cecil is a landscape artist and is inspired by the play of light on the landscape which leads him to explore his local areas. He is always hunting for qualities flight that evoke emotion, this is often the softer light that brings out the in-between tones and greys most would miss.

Joshua Miles: Light

Kirkcudbright Galleries are delighted to welcome a solo exhibition by Joshua Miles: ‘Light’ Location: Mitchell Gallery, Kirkcudbright Galleries. (Level 3) Dates: 4th July – 18th October 2026 Artwork for sale in this exhibition Mitchell Gallery opening times: Monday – Saturday: 10am – 4:30pm Sundays: 11:30 – 4:30pm Joshua Miles is a local artist and printmaker who specialises in Reduction Linocuts. He was born in South Africa and studied Fine Arts at the University of Cape Town. Joshua met and married a Scottish woman and together they moved to Kirkcudbright in 2021. He has a house and studio in Castle street and when he is in there working he is open to visitors. Joshua, like many artists was drawn to the Artists Town and finds his inspiration from many walks in the local area. His passion is for capturing the play of light over the landscape or on water. Because of this he was nominated to be an associate member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists last year and has twice had his work in the Scottish Landscape Awards. Peploe was the most successful, critically and commercially, of the four artists known as the Scottish Colourists. Moreover, it was his friendships with F. C. B. Cadell, J. D. Fergusson and G. L. Hunter that bound them together as a quartet, as they never formed an official group. Alice Strang, Associate Director of Lyon & Turnbull fine art auctioneers, will discuss how Peploe met, worked beside and exhibited with his Colourist colleagues, intertwined with an overview of his international career. She curated the National Galleries of Scotland’s Scottish Colourist Series of exhibitions of the work of Peploe, Fergusson and Cadell and her book about the Scottish Colourists for the galleries is due to be published later this year.
