The Tempest - Shakespeare's Farewell? - GI 26 075

For many The Tempest was not only Shakespeare’s last play but his best. This year Kenneth Branagh plays Prospero in the RSC production – how will his performance be rated? In this course we will discuss the play’s themes and characters. But mostly we will wonder at Shakespeare’s genius. Please bring along a copy of the play.

These two sessions are dedicated to exploring some lesser-known facts about smaller regions in Italy that usually are not the first choice for holiday makers. We will explore Val D’Aosta, Trentino, Molise and San Marino, focusing on history, geography and of course food! The course will be delivered in both Italian and English. Suitable for both beginners and lower intermediate Italian speakers.

When we look at a painting by Jan van Eyck, we are taken back to early 15th century Flanders, a world of faith and symbolism which can seem remote from us. We are drawn in by the fabulous rendering of the visual world but behind it are a web of comments on his society and the characters inhabiting it which can still resonate for us today.

Chatty Café Scheme: Chatter and Natter Table

Join us on Wednesday mornings at our ‘chatter and natter’ table. Run by our friendly table volunteers, we provide a welcoming space for individuals to come together to meet, chat and socialise over a hot drink. One conversation can make all the difference! Pop in anytime from 10.30am – 11.30am The group will either meet in our cosy Library or in V Café – please pop up to Reception on the first floor and one of our team will be able to assist.

British Fire Service - T397

This talk follows the development of firefighting from the earliest known forms through social changes, the industrial revolution, two world wars and modern day. Nigel will use a wide collection of photographs and also look at the role of women in firefighting, especially during the Great War. Nigel enjoyed a career in the fire service and has been speaking on local history and other related subjects for nearly 35 years. We’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Europe in Space - T398

The European Space Agency must be one of the best kept secrets in the UK! Countries of Europe have been co-operating on space science for 50 years and have achieved some spectacular successes. You will learn about our contribution to the International Space Station and about Europe’s own Space Port in South America, from where European and Russian rockets regularly leave to deploy satellites and planetary missions. The talk will concentrate on some of Europe’s space missions, past, present and future with video and animation to illustrate our achievements. We will delve into the history behind her work with themes ranging from industrial life to the rigid social conventions of middle-class life, and the restrictions placed on women as they struggled for financial stability and independence. A Brief History of the Falkland Islands - T399

When the Falkland Islands are mentioned, they are most commonly associated with the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina. This talk will explore 450 years of Falkland Island history from early explorers to the present day (touching only briefly on the 1982 conflict) to illustrate that the islands have a much more complex history than just that conflict. Join serving army officer, Graeme, to hear how the islands have evolved and played an important part in history and learn about a fascinating destination that is becoming increasingly accessible to travellers. Take your time designing and painting your own piece of pottery using vibrant paints and design tools. This session is dedicated to the characters and settings of Alessandro Baricco’s Senza Sangue. The class will cover an introduction to the author, an overview of the plot and a deeper analysis of the characters and language from selected parts of the book.
