Tom Sochas Trio

Fresh from a run of European dates, Tom Sochas Trio returns to PizzaExpress Live for an evening of evocative, contemporary jazz. The setlist travels from the Arctic Circle—featuring music from their mountain-inspired album Facing North—to an exciting preview of brand-new material from a soon to be announced release. Expect a blend of original contemporary jazz and selected standards. Not to be missed! Tom Sochas is a Franco-American pianist born and raised in Paris, France and Nairobi, Kenya. Tom moved to London in 2011 to study and pursue his artistic career. Tom’s love of lyrical and melodic music, hard hitting post-bop and his passion for western classical music has led him to developing a unique sound, itself materialising into his first solo EP, You could hear the bird sing. Following its success Tom Sochas released his debut trio album The Sorcerer on Khumbu Records in April 2022. Tom was awarded the Do It Differently grant from Help Musicians UK to support the release of this record. Tom and the trio have had the pleasure of touring this record and performing to sold-out audiences in some of Europe’s greatest jazz clubs including Ronnie Scott’s in London, Birdland in Hamburg, Sunset Sunside in Paris, Philly Joe’s in Tallinn, Sala Clamores in Madrid, The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh and Milano Jazz Club in Barcelona amongst others. Tom was recently awarded another grant by Help Musicians UK and has just released his sophomore album Facing North, out on Khumbu Records.

The Simon Spillett Big Band

Bursting onto the UK jazz scene in 2020, the Simon Spillett Big Band is that rarest of rare beasts – a genuine all-star jazz orchestra, in this instance uniting some of the most accomplished soloists and bandleaders of today, who’ve come together to celebrate to a colossal musical genius of yesteryear, the late, great saxophonist Tubby Hayes, arguably the nation’s best-loved jazz legend and a performer hard-wired into the history of jazz in Soho. Featuring a starry line-up of UK jazz greats under the direction of award-winning tenorist Simon Spillett, the band’s mission statement is simple; to bring back the heady excitement of the Tubby Hayes Big Band of the 1960s, an outfit which raised the roof whenever and wherever it performed. This band follows in the same spirit, creating an intoxicating atmosphere in which its music communicates on every level, the entire package tied together with the leader’s signature insightful wit. Utilising a repertoire of Hayes’ own arrangements, many of which were never issued on record, as well as pieces by his contemporaries like trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar and pianist Harry South, the Simon Spillett Big Band has proved hugely popular with those who’ve come to hear it, one review calling it "the most hard-swinging big band in existence right now.” The band has appeared at many leading UK jazz festivals including the EFG London Jazz Festival and at legendary venues across the British Isles.

Dave Lee Trio 'A Legend in his Lifetime'

Born in 1926 Dave has always been a huge jazz fan. His family moved to South Africa and he played in clubs there from 1947 to 1954, when he was told by the Police to leave as he refused to play with and for whites only. He became the pianist for the Johnny Dankworth band and later their manager. He’s played with many famous jazz stars: Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong as well as being Judy Garland’s accompanist. He started London’s Jazz FM. Playing jazz, blues and boogie-woogie as good as ever with his trio it’s a one off experience of music and jazz stories. Dave Lee’s life has been a life in jazz and blues. But he is also a composer, accompanist and raconteur. In 1942 he won Melody Maker’s poll for best new jazz pianist. His family moved to South Africa in 1947 and soon he was resident musician in clubs in Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. He refused to play with only white musicians and for white only audiences and was “encouraged” to leave South Africa by their police in 1954. Back in England he luckily started playing piano with the Johnny Dankworth band and later became their arranger and manager. He was session pianist for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee on their London session disc. After that he was asked to go on tour with the Rolling Stones but sadly was too booked up to go. For six years he was the pianist for Judy Garland on her European tours and he has also accompanied Vera Lynn, Sarah Vaughan, Norman Wisdom, Danny Kaye and Cleo Laine.

Eliane Correa & En El Aire

Eliane Correa & En El Aire

Eliane and her latest project return to PizzaExpress Live for a very special intimate show. Powerhouse pianist and composer Eliane Correa relaunches her Afrocuba-centric cinematic jazz project En El Aire, with which her first album, Rumba con Flores (Movimientos Records 2016, Songlines 4*, Jazzwise 4*), earned the critical acclaim of Cubaphiles and jazzheads alike. Eliane is known for her energetic leadership, masterful playing and arranging, and her unwavering centricity in the Latin scene of the UK over the last decade, her original compositions span from classic Cuban son and salsa to the most abstract, spiritual jazz inspired compositions. Her 7 years touring as Hans Zimmer’s piano soloist and experience in composing for the screen have added layers of cinematic richness to her sound. Not to be confused with her renowned 12-piece salsa orchestra La Evolución (or its smaller sibling, Eliane’s Cuban Sextet), En El Aire project falls on the more experimental end of Eliane’s creative range, where jazz meets ancestral afrocuban spirituality and cinematicsynths - but make it danceable. Master drummer Hammadi Valdés (Chucho Valdés, Carlos Acosta) alternates between congas and batá drums (Cuban spiritual drums of Yoruba lineage), backed by heavy grooves by Alley Lloyd (Fleur East, Nectar Woode) and Richie Sweet (Jorja Smith, Oscar Jerome), and a mix of synths, soundscapes and modified pianos at the hands of Eliane.
