Down To The Bone

Grammy Nominated project with over Half Million Sales "hailed as the kings of UK jazz groove". Down To The Bone is Stuart Wade as producer, writer and mastermind behind the whole groove project, working with other talented musicians and co-writers to bring together a project of good grooves. Set up at the tail end of 1995 when Wade decided to take a track from the soul band he was in at the time, Think Twice, and remix it to give it a rawer and stripped down feel. The result was the Down To The Bone remix of the track 'Joy Is Free' which had great success. This Way Forward will be released on Dome/Cherry Red Records on 5th June. Following on from the success of his remix he teamed up with Think Twice keyboard player, Simon Greenaway, to put together a string of songs. This resulted in the first release on a 12” single of Staten Island Groove . Released on Internal Bass Records, a label Wade set up with another member of Think Twice. This resulted in rave reviews for the single and club and radio play across the U.K. It was at this time that Stuart decided to try to complete an album, From Manhattan To Staten , a title Wade came up with to show his influences from across the pond, it was decided to try to take the whole sound over to America to see what would happen. Monzanto Sound & Friends

Monzanto Sound presents a unique show featuring some guest artists and musicians that are part of their collective and network. This event will be about sharing a soul connection between creatives and they will be creating a space to feel the freedom and fluidity of improvisation through generosity. They will be merging funk beats with African percussion, neo-soul with dub effects to showcase some new and exciting material. Off the back of their debut album The Channel , which was critically acclaimed in the Observer and Radio 6, they will be taking that concept further in this one time only performance. Monzanto Sound are a rising, South East London-based music collective fusing together different styles from the African Diaspora and combining them with a hypnotic, psychedelic edge. A high-energy, rhythmic group with an ear for space and simplicity, their sonic aesthetic is carefully considered. Traversing through jazz-inflected funk, psychedelic trip- hop and cosmic neo-soul, they connect the dots using pulsating grooves, hypnotic polyrhythms and sublime vocals. Jazz singer-songwriter and composer Sarah L King brings her brand new album tour The Light Ahead to PizzaExpress Live Soho. With a heady cocktail of soul, jazz and funk, King and her world class trio deliver her catchy groove-led original songs with King’s assured pure-toned vocals and a warm stage presence, making this a show not to be missed! Sarah L King grew up under the influence of her jazz trumpeter and bandleader father. After singing in several London-based soul and gospel choirs, and a creative career in filmmaking and screenwriting, King has emerged as an accomplished vocalist, songwriter and composer, catapulting onto the London jazz scene. King’s much acclaimed first album Fire Horse, produced by Claire Martin OBE (producer of The Light Ahead) has featured on Jazz FM and BBC Radio 3 Jazz Requests. King has toured with her Stockholm trio, and made a sold out appearance at the EFG London Jazz Festival 2025. The Duke Ellington Song Book

Following their sold-out inaugural Dean Street 2023 concert and a follow up successful return last few years, we had no hesitation in arranging this further 2026 Summertime return for Pete Long and his Echoes of Ellington Big Band presenting the Duke Ellington Song Book. In 1914, a young man, Edward Ellington, wrote a simple piano piece entitled Soda Fountain Rag. Over the next sixty years, he would compose a cannon of work which would have him recognised as the foremost American composer of any genre. Nicknamed Duke by his school-friends because of his regal bearing, Ellington’s music contains a unique blend of contrasts and contradictions. At once cutting edge and elegant, intimate and shouting, traditional and progressive, the music is unique, exciting, earthy and refined. The Echoes of Ellington Orchestra, was formed to celebrate the Duke’s music, and to bring it, by live performance, to a modern audience. Jazz enthusiasts the length and breadth of the U.K., and later on in Europe and the United States, have been amazed by the group’s ability to get inside the scores and really bring out the Ellington flavour. Today, the orchestra is in its finest incarnation yet, with highly specialised virtuoso players on all the instruments who understand intimately the nuances put on the page by the Duke.

Orchard

Eight-piece neo-soul group Orchard perform their second EP at PizzaExpress Live this summer, alongside some exciting and exclusive unreleased music. Heavily influenced by artists such as Roy Hargrove, Robert Glasper and Kokoroko, Orchard’s music synthesises meaningful song writing with heavy grooves, warm horn lines, and blistering improvisation. Having played at prestigious venues and festivals in their first year as artists (EFG London Jazz Festival, Love Supreme Jazz Festival, The Vortex Jazz Club), Orchard are rapidly beginning to rise on the UK jazz scene. Orchard are the newest eight-piece neo-soul group to emerge from the London jazz scene. Having met at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, they have been shaped by their shared love of the jazz tradition, and yet bring their most valuable contributions to the music through individual influences and unique musical backgrounds. Celebrating the interaction between individuality and collective experience is what Orchard’s music is all about - like rows of trees in the orchard, each individual voice grows in conversation with the whole. As part of the 50th celebrations of PizzaExpress Live Soho, Voodoo Brass Band are ready to bring the New Orleans party back to Soho. Performing both own-brand original tunes and fresh covers of old-school classics, the band's sound is rooted in a hot blend of modern New Orleans, Club House and Jazz. Having concluded their 2025 festival season, the viral sensation Voodoo Brass Band will be getting you up and dancing all night long. A social media presence that speaks for itself: with over half a million followers on Tiktok and Instagram, and videos reaching 50 million views, it’s no wonder the Voodoo Brass Band are so in demand! 2023 was quite the year for this young and impassioned group! After the release of Due South, their largest record project to date, they were featured on international news networks, with appearances back home on the Breakfast Show with Greg James, Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, and Radio London. All of your favourite hits from your year 6 disco performed in the iconic styles of Sinatra, Basie, Ellington and more. The Sam Every Big Band is one of the most exciting young big bands performing in the UK today. After making their London club debut in 2019, they have obtained a 100% sell-out record at all of their Jazz club performances, making serious waves in the UK jazz industry. They are regular performers at the PizzaExpress Jazz Club in Soho, and have performed multiple sell-out shows at the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London’s Soho. They are a projects-based band, performing a variety of unique sets, entirely compiled of original arrangements for the band, featuring acclaimed UK singers. So far they have worked with the award-winning Emma Smith, Iain Mackenzie, Katie Birtill, Freddie Benedict and many more. The Terraplanes

Hailing from Bristol, with a sound echoing the 1960's British R'n'B bands, The Terraplanes have been a breath of fresh air since the release of their debut E.P Midnight Train in 2020. The Tom Ward Sextet

Tom Ward is a 23 year old up and coming jazz pianist, specialising in stride piano. He has already collaborated with notable artists such as Jamie Cullum, Kansas Smitty’s, and Guy Barker, which has seen him grace the stage at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. Joining Tom on stage will be some of London’s best and most in demand musicians - Pete Horsfall (Trumpet), Zach Sholapurkar (Alto), Giulia Marro (Clarinet), Ben Love (Bass) and Luke McCarthy(Drums). The show will feature lots of Tom’s original music as well the music of John Kirby. Tom Ward, a 23 year old jazz pianist, is quickly establishing himself as a notable talent, specialising in the stride piano style of the 1920s and 1930s. Heavily influenced by jazz legends such as Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, and Nat King Cole, Tom has a deep understanding and appreciation of the tradition, whilst providing a unique and fresh approach. Tom’s career has already seen him grace the stages of prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and Ronnie Scott’s, and Ladbroke Hall. His ability to captivate audiences with his technical skill and engaging stage presence has led to collaborations with a diverse range of artists. Martin Speake Big Band

Join acclaimed British altoist Martin Speake and his newly formed big band for the launch of their debut album, 'Hidden Vision'. Featuring 18 renowned musicians from the UK and beyond, including Czech pianist Emil Viklický and a powerhouse brass section led by Louis Dowdeswell and Mark Nightingale, the concert will showcase innovative arrangements by up-and-coming saxophonist/arranger Charlie Rees (plus arrangements by Viklický, Martin Hathaway & Pete Saberton), all crafted from Speake’s diverse discography. Martin studied classical saxophone at Trinity College of Music. At that time there were no jazz courses in London, but he met some future jazz musicians at the college, including pianist Simon Purcell, saxophonist Mark Lockheart and the members of saxophone quartet Itchy Fingers who were studying at the Royal Academy of Music. He toured Europe, South America, Africa and the USA with Itchy Fingers appearing at major jazz festivals and playing on their first two CDs Quark (Virgin Records) and Teranga (Venture). In 1986 they won the Schlitz Young Jazz Musicians of the Year Award, which was televised by the BBC. In 1988, he left the group to develop his own projects, which have been many and diverse, and establish himself as a composer and improviser.

Join the Martin-Lockett Quintet for an evening celebrating the centenary of the "Prince of Darkness". Bridging two generations of British jazz, "visionary" trumpeter Alistair Martin (Tom Smith, Shirley Smart) and legendary saxophonist Mornington Lockett (Ronnie Scott, Stan Tracey) explore the chameleonic legacy of Miles Davis. From the iconic cool of the 1950s to the fiery innovations of his later eras, this is a powerhouse tribute to an icon of style, and restless reinvention. Mornington Lockett Saxophonist, composer, arranger and teacher Mornington Lockett studied at Dartington College of Arts, gaining a first class honours degree, before moving to London to attend the Guildhall School of Music And Drama as a post-graduate. As a member of the Ronnie Scott Quintet, Mornington toured widely, in the U.K. and internationally. He has recorded more than 50 albums with a wide variety of artists, including Ronnie Scott, Jim Mullen, Stan Tracey, Don Grusin, Martin Drew, Claire Martin, Sarah Jane Morris and Ian Shaw. Recent commercial studio work includes a session with Oasis. Mornington has also played with many international jazz artists including Jimmy Smith, Arturo Sandoval, Franco Ambrosetti, Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Dave Weckl, Bernard Purdie, Phil Upchurch, Jon Faddis, Ulf Wakenius, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Gabòr Bolla, Nicolas Meier, Georgie Fame and Jack DeJohnette.
