Evening Cookery Club - Chinese

Gourmets believe Chinese to be one of the three major world cuisines – and gastronomy has been regarded as a high art in China for well over 2,000 years where food is always judged on its specific temperature and tastes – pungent, sweet, sour, bitter and salty – such that Confucius stated if food wasn’t in perfect balance, man would not eat! The geography and cultural differences of China are so vast, this will be no more than an introduction but we’ll do our best with rice, noodles, soy, garlic, ginger, pork and shrimp. EXPECT RECIPES LIKE: + Mapu tofu + Marinated black ear salad + Kung Pao chicken + Di san xian – sauted potatoes, aubergines and green peppers + Smashed cucumber salad + Gan Bian – Dry fry cauliflower + Scrambled eggs with tomato + Sichuan Pickled Vegetables + Red Chili Oil, Suan Lo Bo/Pickled Radish + Hunan chili Sauce. Suitable for vegetarian and gluten free. Not suitable for vegan. For home cooks who want to explore something new. Our cookery classes are relaxed, informative and fun and are specially designed by our teaching chefs to give you skills and confidence in the kitchen. We will learn how to create, cook and present some of the most famous dishes of Vietnam. From Vietnamese Spring Rolls to Spicy Pork & Noodles, this session is not to be missed! Street Food Express - Chinese Bao Making

Bored with the usual places to go for lunch? Don’t fancy eating a sandwich on the go? Then why not join us at Blackfriars Cookery School and take part in an express class? Relax and have fun at our convivial afternoon of Chinese Bao making. Our cookery school teacher will show you just how easy it is to make home-made soft pillows of steamed buns with succulent savoury fillings and luscious sweet treats. Accompanied with a St Dominic’s beer to wash it down and enough to take home to show off to family, friends and work colleagues. Come on your own, with family or friends. We all love the romance of wine and cheese, but did you know beer and cheese make the perfect partners? There’s nothing like refreshing your palate with a swig of nice cold beer between decadent bites of fine cheese. The sweet, malty and hoppy notes of beer not only clean the palate but enhance the crazy complex flavours found in a variety of cheeses. Join us for a unique beer and cheese tasting. Start the evening with an arrival schooner of Blackfriars’ Lager followed by a tasting of top-drawer cheeses paired with a variety of local craft beers. Our in-house expert will take you through each of the beer and cheese combinations explaining how and why they pair so well. Tequila, It Makes You Happy - Tequila Mezcal Tasting

TEQUILA & MEZCAL TASTING This unique tasting experience showcases Mexico’s finest export, uncovering the history, myths and traditions behind the nation’s legendary spirit. Discover the complex flavours of the revered agave spirits and let our host guide you through the intricate harvesting and distillation processes that are used to transform the agave plant into the range of spirits we know and love. We will guide you through a selection of fine tequilas, and its more complex and smokier cousin mezcal; getting to know the different classifications of agave spirit from Blanco to Reposado…and beyond. Evening Cookery Club - Portuguese Fish & Seafood

Say Portugal and you might think about golf, surfing, the Algarve and Ronaldo! But Europe’s most westerly point and oldest nation (dating back to 1139) was a super-power of maritime explorers so no surprise its cuisine relies heavily on seafood such as grilled octopus, seafood rice and grilled sardines as well as the ubiquitous bacalhau salt cod of which they still get through 25,000 tonnes annually! Nando’s was inspired by Portuguese cuisine – especially its piri-piri chicken – but our favourite isn’t this, or their deliciously-sticky-sweet Port with queso, but will always be the delightful Pastel de nata custard tarts! Book now to try some of these inspired culinary creations from the lesser-known part of the Iberian Peninsular. Event suitable for gluten free. Not suitable for vegetarian or vegan.
