Opening Celebration Event - We Make Museums: Sustaining and changing worlds

Sorting labels for A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World, Ruth Ewan, 2024 To mark the opening of our GI exhibition, featuring new artworks by Sohaila Baluch, Ruth Ewan and Alixandra Prybyla, we will be inviting the artists and members of the We Make Museums commissioning group to reflect on their processes and the themes in the exhibition together in a celebratory event. Join us to hear more about this ground breaking project and the artists’ complementary approaches to social justice, compassion, feminist protest and anti-racism. More about We Make Museums We Make Museums is a three year project developed by Glasgow Women’s Library to initiate crucial discussions about museum processes, empowering communities to think about acquisitions made by museums and to help shape the GWL collection into the future. The group includes 17 women with lived experiences of racism, sexism, classism, poverty, ableism, neuro-diversity, health inequalities and trauma who have worked together, supported by GWL staff, for the last two years. Inspired by GWL’s unique history as a grassroots counter-cultural organisation, challenging inequalities in the cultural sector, the We Make Museums group has been working hard to think about how we might differently shape the GWL museum collection, for the first time with an acquisitions budget.* At the end of last year, following a hugely popular open call to artists, the group worked with the wider community at GWL to select three artists...

Story Café Special: In Conversation with Eleanor Anstruther

Sorting labels for A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World, Ruth Ewan, 2024 Join us as we welcome anarchist aristocrat Eleanor Anstruther, author of FALLOUT, a darkly funny coming-of-age novel about identity and family secrets, set against the backdrop of the Greenham Common Peace Camp (an anti-nuclear peace camp run by women between 1981 and 2000). Eleanor will be in discussion with GWL’s Donna Moore about the inspiration for FALLOUT, the unique role women can play in activism and Eleanor’s own life at the forefront of activism: abandoning a privileged existence to chase eclipses, set up a commune, and build a stone circle by hand. Women's Heritage Bike Ride

Sorting labels for A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World, Ruth Ewan, 2024 This guided bike ride will introduce some of the remarkable women who have lived, worked and cycled in our neighbourhood. You’ll hear about activists, hawkers, weavers, and educators from different backgrounds who have inhabited and enriched these areas. This event is aimed at women who are confident cycling on cycle paths. We go at a gentle pace and our guides ensure everyone stays together and feels safe. The route is approximately 7km/4miles. Voi e-bikes are available for hire at Bridgeton Cross. Please visit voi.com for details. If you want to build your confidence on a bike (or learn to cycle), cycling charities Women on Wheels, Sunny Cycles, Dynamo CIC, and Bike For Good offer a range of services to support women and non-binary people to get cycling including led rides, classes and bike loan. West End Women's Heritage Walk

Sorting labels for A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World, Ruth Ewan, 2024 This guided Heritage Walk shares the stories of many remarkable women unearthed by our Women’s History Detectives. You’ll walk in the footsteps of suffragettes, rent strikers, and the first female students of the University of Glasgow, and learn about Rachel Hamilton, a pipe-smoking labourer and special constable, and other “wild women” who built this part of Glasgow, and whose contributions can still be felt today. Glasgow Women’s Library made history itself by creating this guided walking tour in 2007; the first one to focus on the pioneering women of the city. Motifs of Sisterhood

Sorting labels for A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World, Ruth Ewan, 2024 Join past and present students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for a concert highlighting the lives and contributions of Glaswegian women in the early 20th century. Classical music performances – by women composers of this era, from across the UK and Europe – will be interwoven with stories of women from Glasgow, including pioneering activists, artists, novelists and musicians. From art schools in France to conservatoires in Germany, this concert will bring history to life, showing how these inspirational Glaswegian women were shaped by their travels and the other trailblazing women whose paths they crossed.
