Printmaking (Wednesdays for Ten Weeks)

A self-directed, untutored, and collaborative printmaking day, suitable for those with some experience of printmaking. Our members use a variety of techniques such as linocuts, collagraphs, drypoint, tetrapak, gelli plate, woodcut printing and aluminium etching. These sessions will provide the perfect space to work together sharing ideas and exploring these methods further. For those with little prior experience there’ll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions along the way and learn more about working with these different beautiful craft techniques. www.pressgangprintmakers.org.uk

Creative Techniques Continued (Four Thursdays)

Those who attended my first ‘Creative Techniques’ course will remember my aim was to focus on the steps each person took to improve and develop their own painting skills. In this course each painter, whatever their level of experience or medium they use, and however they define themselves (figurative or abstract), will hopefully learn to understand their own creative process better. As a result, they will be able to set their own goals and discover, through experimenting and exploring new possibilities in an informed way, how to achieve them. My job will be to help each person navigate their own journey. What I would like you to do is come with some idea of a project – or inspiration for one – even if it is as simple as setting up your own still life each session. We have a wonderful resource available, and that is each other – and the opportunity to observe the artistic journey of other painters while embarking on one’s own. I will want to make use of this. Another very useful learning exercise is to examine your previous work, especially paintings that are unresolved or that disappointed you in some way – so you are welcome to bring anything in that you would like some help with. Any medium is fine but bring a lot of surfaces so that it will be possible to try out different things and do some exercises which will include drawing and colour mixing. karenpophamartist.com

Matisse’s Cut-outs (Weekend Workshop)

In the late 1940s Henri Matisse turned almost exclusively to cut paper as his primary medium introducing a radically new direction that came to be known as a cut-out. Matisse would cut painted sheets into forms of varying shapes and sizes from which he then arranged into lively compositions showing inventiveness and elevating the decorative to a work of art. After studying Matisse’s various ways of composition and his vibrant use of colour and creation of rhythm and movement, you will embark on your own pieces which may be figurative or abstract. You will be encouraged (or coerced!) to throw caution to the wind and see where your imagination takes you. All you need to bring with you is a good pair of scissors, do check their suitability for cutting paper before you come and also a brush for gluing – 15/20mm will be ideal. Coloured paper provided.

Expand Your Vision as a Painter (Five Mondays)

This course is for oil painters with some experience who want to develop their own individual painting projects, with expert tutor guidance. Finding a theme – whether this be from film stills, your own photographs and drawings, or other source material, or setting up an observational project . Developing – your use of colour, composition, tone and paint application. Focusing on differing approaches – to observational and imaginative work, (using other artists as examples),figurative or abstract, whilst developing skills in how to organise a palette, mix colours and apply paint. I will give you some trigger words for your ‘Theme’ a month before the course starts if requested. One day will be spent on an exercise exploring tone and colour. For those wanting a more project/exercises based course, projects can be tailored to the students individual needs. Drawing materials and some paper will be available but students can bring their own pencils, charcoal, rubbers, inks, pens, tracing paper etc. Students will provide their own paints, brushes and canvases/hardboard, or paper. If using oil, an odour free solvent and tear off disposable palettes will be required. Kitchen roll or cotton rags for painters in any medium as well. Students can email the tutor ideas (images, themes etc) they might be considering working with, at least 2 weeks before class starts. NB images sent must be at least 1MB so the tutor can advise on suitability etc.

Life Drawing (Five Saturdays)

Mark make, explore, work to your own agenda. A session of untutored life drawing. We envisage starting with warm up short poses culminating with, probably, one or two longer poses. All levels of experience are welcome to join this friendly group. You will need to bring your own materials. Expressive Landscapes in Oils Using a Palette Knife (One Day Workshop)

Join the overall winner of the Ilminster Open to explore using oils to create lively and expressive landscapes through mark making. In this course Annie will focus on how to use different marks to suggest different aspects of the landscape. Over the course of the day you will learn how to start from an image to abstract key elements and add depth to your compositions resulting in your own unique response to the landscape. Annie’s approach is to encourage experimentation; mark making and play to push the boundaries of your work and give you confidence in making a start on new work. Annie will demonstrate her approach to oil painting using palette knives, rags, sticks and other materials and share many hard-won lessons on composition and technique. Annie is an experienced tutor and will give plenty of hands-on help and discussion time. So, ​whether you are a complete beginner or an artist looking for a different challenge you are very welcome. Students should bring their own oil paints and tools (palette knives and brushes). I will bring spare oil paints, knives, rags and other mark making materials. Expressive Watercolours (Three Thursdays)

This course is about enjoying a freedom of expression with this versatile, subtle and beautiful medium with structure and fluidity. Tonal values, colour-mixing and mark making with the brush and coloured pencils will add life and movement to subtle or vibrant colour. Structure, composition and drawing will be an integral part of creating your work. Working with pools of colour on a palette allows response and control with brush ready to dip into. Other techniques of scoring spraying n masking stencil to create layers give depth- be it abstract, landscapes or still life. Good quality paper and large w/c brush essential. Abstracting the Coast : Shapes, Lines & Landforms (Weekend Workshop)

Starting On-location we will get warmed up with line and shape drawing—capturing Salcombe scenes, hills, boats through fast gestural sketches. Back in the studio: experimenting with simplifying and abstracting forms and Colour studies inspired by what we have seen. Combining simplified shapes into semi-abstract compositions. Aiming for a final piece if possible but no pressure. Enjoy! You will need: Sketch book – A3 or A4 Paints, acrylic or water-based oils for ease of drying. Brushes and pallet knife. Photomontage (One Day Workshop)

A brief introduction followed by going into making small photomontages using cut and paste to get a feel for the medium and its possibilities. There will also be a visual presentation to show how photomontage began as we know it in the early 20th Century in movements like Dada and Cubism. Then we move on to making a bigger, more considered piece which can be a free exploration or to explore a theme / idea like personal history / family photos or historical / political themes or any other subject which interests you. This is also where we can bring in drawing and painting to make mixed media imagery. You will need: One small sketch book A4 or 5 One larger sketch book A3 or loose sheets of A3 Glue e.g. Pritt Stick Scissors Water based paint you like to use e.g. watercolour, gouache etc. Pencils and brushes Printed photographic imagery you would like to use in photomontages, which you are happy to cut up i.e. bring copies of precious originals. Beginners’ Introduction to Painting the Landscape (One Day Workshop)

This one-day workshop is open to members and non-members who are beginners or for those who have never painted but would like to try. The basic principles of painting a landscape will be explored in a supportive, enjoyable and relaxed learning environment. Students will learn how one can transform a ‘flat surface’ into a three D image one feels one could walk into. All materials needed will be supplied.
