Blest Pair of Sirens

The Durham University Chapel Choirs join forces with Durham Student Music for a showcase of choral and vocal music, culminating in a thrilling massed performance of Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens, in support of local charity RTMinds. Experience an unforgettable evening of choral brilliance with the Durham University Chapel Choirs and Durham Student Music. Featuring all eight chapel choirs of Durham University, they will perform music from Elgar to Joanna Forbes, Howells to Bairstow. The night culminates with an epic joint performance of Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens, accompanied by the DSM Consort of players. This spectacular concert is raising money for RT Minds, a local mental health charity championing the arts. In Poetry and in Song

Join Durham University Chamber Choir for an evening of choral music that celebrates the power of poetry; from the captivating writings of Wilfred Owen from the World Wars to the conflicts of the body and soul in Holst’s Evening Watch, there’s an eclectic selection of song to bring together the choir’s season. “In Poetry & Song” is a celebration of the power of poetry to bring to life its ideas when set to music. This journey of song unpicks the themes of the Natural, Inner Thought, Conflict, Storytelling and Dialogue with a vast mix of composers and time periods. The evening begins with an exploration of Stanford’s Partsong writings (op. 119) which are a set of 8 short compositions set to the poetry of Mary Elizabeth Coleridge in the 19th century. In the midst of this performance is a stunning addendum to the famous “Blue Bird” with Bingham’s “The Drowned Lovers”, a haunting text of love that is set in a background of natural beauty. The return from the interval instantly re-acquires the listeners’ attention with the cries of war instilled in Esenvald’s moving “Soldier’s Mother’s Lullaby”, and Elgar’s “They Are at Rest”, texts and melodies which haunt us as they place us centred in the pain and suffering of our history. The final selections of music bring new peace and tranquility with a set of Partsongs from British composer Phillip Cooke, with words from Tennyson, Lawrence and Housman – his songs are contrasting and conclude with luscious, gentle tones from the choir.

Join DUBB for an evening of band and fan favourites from the past 2 years, sure to lift the spirits and get the whole crowd moving! Don't miss your last chance this year to see Durham's flagship jazz ensemble Durham University Big Band in full swing, playing highlights from our previous sets. Featuring tunes from big band icons Charles Mingus, Thad Jones, as well as in-house arranging from the band, the setlist covers a huge range of jazz history and genres, played by one of the best student big bands in the country. Reflections and Reformation

Durham University Classical Ensemble presents an evening of reflection and reformation, featuring Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor, Bach’s Cantata 170, Emilie Mayer’s overture No.1, and Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony. Join Durham University Classical Ensemble for an evening of reflection and reformation in Redhills Durham Miner’s Hall. Opening the concert will be Mozart’s foreboding Adagio and Fugue in C minor, followed by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata 170, composed for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity. It features the words taken from Epistle to the Romans and the Gospel of Matthew that explore themes of sin and redemption, culminating in a radiant turning toward heaven. Emilie Mayer’s dramatic overture drives forward with restless energy and to conclude our journey, Felix Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony, composed to mark the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, unites faith and renewal through Lutheran traditions and triumphant affirmation. £7 Standard £6 Concession £5 Performing Arts Members This performance takes place at Redhills Durham Miners Hall, The Miners Hall, Flass St, Durham, DH1 4BE. Set sail with Durham Student Music on the Prince Bishop River Cruiser for an incredible evening of celebration. As the sun sets on another year of music-making, you can be sure to enjoy a stunning 2 hour sunset cruise on the Prince Bishop River Cruiser. The night also includes entertainment from Blue Eyed Brass and the inaugural Durham Student Music Awards Ceremony, celebrating some of the finest moments of the year. Join Durham Student Music and DSM societies for a special finale celebration, closing the curtain on a memorable year of music-making. The Prince Bishop River Cruiser also contains a bar, where a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can be purchased. Step into Enchanted Realms for an evening of myth, magic and orchestral colour. The Durham University Orchestral Society Chamber Orchestra presents a season finale filled with wonder, escapism and a sparkling, high-spirited conclusion. Step into Enchanted Realms with DUOS Chamber Orchestra and conductor Zac Smith. Schubert’s Entr’acte from Rosamunde Act 1 sets the scene with glowing lyricism, before Luciano Berio’s Rendering reimagines sketches from Schubert’s unfinished Tenth Symphony in a haunting, dreamlike tapestry. Ravel’s Mother Goose invites listeners into a magical fairytale world of Sleeping Beauty and enchanted gardens. The concert concludes with Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld Overture, which bursts with wit and effervescent energy, culminating in the famous Can-Can.
