Art Café: Crossing Borders - Building an International Art Career

Art Café: Crossing Borders – Building an International Art Career Thursday 18th June, 14:00 GMT | Online | Free Making it as an artist in your home country is one thing. Building a career that crosses borders, reaches international collectors, and opens doors in new markets is something else entirely and for many artists, it feels out of reach. This Art Café session is dedicated to changing that. In an open, informal conversation, four speakers who have navigated the international art world from very different perspectives will share what it actually takes to build a practice and a presence beyond your own borders. Whether you are an artist looking to exhibit internationally, seeking representation abroad, or simply wondering how to make your work visible to a global audience, this session will give you real insight, honest advice, and practical ideas to take away. The conversation will explore topics such as: How to identify the right international markets for your work What it takes to build meaningful relationships with galleries, collectors, and curators abroad How to present yourself and your practice to international audiences The role of online presence and social media in crossing geographical boundaries How to navigate cultural differences in the art market What artists wish they had known earlier about building an international career This session is free and open to all.

Legal Hour: Working with Galleries

Legal Hour: Working with Galleries Tuesday 21st July, from 13:00 BST (UK time) | Online Gallery relationships can be one of the most rewarding parts of an artist’s career and one of the most complicated. This Legal Hour session focuses on the practical legal questions that arise when working with galleries: from consignment agreements and commission structures to what happens when a gallery closes, a work goes missing, or a payment doesn’t arrive. Pierre Valentin brings his extensive experience advising both artists and galleries to help you understand your rights, know what to look for in an agreement, and feel more confident navigating these relationships. Artists are invited to ask about topics such as: What a consignment agreement should and shouldn’t include How commission splits work and what is considered standard What to do if a gallery hasn’t paid you or is holding your work Who is responsible if a work is damaged or lost while in a gallery’s care How to exit a gallery relationship professionally and legally What to check before signing an exclusivity clause Whether you are approaching your first gallery relationship or navigating a long-standing one, this session will give you the knowledge to protect yourself and your work. Guest Speaker Pierre Valentin – Art Lawyer Pierre is one of the most respected art lawyers practising today and a leading figure in art and cultural property law.
