Willow Weaving Course: Berry Basket

An ideal beginner’s basketry workshop. You’ll make a small, beautifully functional willow basket – perfect for garden produce, foraging, or displaying natural treasures. The finished basket measures approximately 6 inches wide and 4-5 inches high. This course is especially valuable for beginners who want to build confidence before moving into basketry. Starting with a slath, you’ll weave the base, insert the stakes to form the “cage,” and shape the sides. A simple border completes the top before you fit a handle bow and wrap it securely. You’ll have access to a selection of willow varieties so your finished basket reflects your own style and taste. A great introduction to the essential skills of traditional basket making. Willow is a marvellous and timeless, traditional material used in making a variety of baskets and many other items both practical and sculptural. The workshop is designed for adults of any creative level and is the perfect way to spend the day meeting and working alongside like minded people. The course takes place in the Heritage Craft Barn at Stanwick Lakes, a 750-acre protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. Bat Walk (Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group)

Come and join us on a walk as we look for bats around Stanwick Lakes, and listen out for their echolocation sounds using bat detectors. This bat walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event and is designed for young people aged 11-17. The group has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors, meet like-minded people, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. The group has been set up in response to, and with, local young people who have a passion for nature and is part of the local network of the Mammal Society, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals. Afternoon Tea with Craig Nathan

Afternoon Tea with Craig Nathan Enjoy a traditional Afternoon Tea inspired by the calm and simplicity of our nature reserve with a beautiful view of our Solstice Lake while listening to our request pianist play. Craig Nathan is an International lounge pianist and plays beautiful and evocative improvisations based on your favourite songs. All sing requests are considered; let Craig play a song from your wedding or childhood, or play ‘guess that tune’ on your table. You can also choose from a song-menu booklet that includes anything from Adele and Abba, through to Eric Clapton, Elton John, to Ed Sheeran and Frank Sinatra! All gently performed and improvised. Craig plays in top London hotels, numerous restaurants and regularly plays for Sunday Lunch at Browns in Milton Keynes. He has also played the organ and has played as a locum at top Cathedrals such as St Paul’s London, Westminster Abbey and Canterbury! Settle in and savour a selection of classic sandwiches filled with smoked salmon, egg mayo, and cheese and ham, accompanied by a sausage roll, crisps and a mini quiche, along with a fruit scone served with clotted cream, and a small selection of sweet treats – perfect for a relaxed afternoon surrounded by nature. Copper Foiling – Butterflies and Bees A fun and relaxed workshop where you will make ‘Butterflies and Bee’ suncatchers to take home, using the basics of the Tiffany copper foil technique. During the workshop you will be guided through the process from learning to cut glass to using the copper foil, soldering and constructing your Butterflies, Bees, Honeycomb, or Beehive. All equipment and materials will be provided along with refreshments and biscuits, you just need to bring enthusiasm. No previous experience is necessary. Please note that solder contains lead. Therefore, this course is not recommended for those that are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please wear covered shoes. What’s included in the price: Tools, materials and safety equipment are provided. Linocut Jigsaw Workshop

A one day workshop where you will create a lino print using the jigsaw method. The jigsaw method in lino is the act of cutting your lino block into sections which you can ink up with different colours to create colourful prints. You will design, carve and print using the jigsaw method. You can choose from templates provided by the tutor or create from your own idea. The workshop will be inspired by the season, flowers, nature, celebrations. You are welcome to bring your own sketchbook with ideas to develop, otherwise all materials, tools and inspiration will be provided. Spoon Carving Workshop - One Day

On this therapeutic one-day beginners’ course at Stanwick Lakes you will learn how to carve a spoon using basic wood carving techniques and tools. You will begin by learning how to cleave wood and use an axe to produce your spoon blank. The rest of the day will be spent using a sloyd knife and a hook knife to carve to shape your individual home-made spoon. The course covers a selection of knife grips, which will keep your carving under control as well as keeping you safe. Time will be spent looking at how the spoon develops in a 3-dimensional form, covering the spoons ‘crook’, bowl and handle to get a well-balanced and functioning spoon. Wooden spoons like you will make have been carved for thousands of years and for most of the population, were used as an eating utensil until relatively recently. ‘Spoon’ was originally an Anglo-Saxon word that meant ‘a chip of wood’. The oldest known wooden spoon in England is a ladle found at Glastonbury Lake Village dating to 250BC. Another notable find of wooden spoons are the personal spoons found on the wreck of the Mary Rose.

All About Badgers (Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group)

Hosted by the Northamptonshire Badger Group and suitable for young adults age 18-30. Join the Northamptonshire Badger group to discover all about badgers, including how to spot the signs that they live on a site, their setts and how to survey for them. The event will start in the visitor centre with a talk on badger ecology, followed by walk looking for signs of tracks, trails and setts. This walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event which w=has been set up to inspire young people (0-30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. This walk is for for young adults aged between 18-30. This badger walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event.
