Come and join Doorstep Arts, DYT and DAS Groups this August for a truly exciting theatrical experience! The performance begins with a brand-new devised production performed by Doorstep Youth Theatre (ages 14–20). Travel back in time to Vulgaria, four years before the Potts family arrive. The parents of the “hidden children” are struggling to rebuild their lives following the Baroness’s child ban… but are some townspeople hiding more than they let on? After the interval, enjoy the much-loved musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr, performed by all four Doorstep Arts Studio Course (DAS) groups, featuring young performers aged 7–18 years. Follow eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts as he restores an old race car with the help of his children, Jeremy and Jemima – only to discover it’s magical! When the wicked Baron Bomburst plots to steal the car, the family teams up with Truly Scrumptious, the children and Grandpa to outwit the Baron, Baroness and the terrifying Child Catcher. Directed by Doorstep Lead Artists Polly Ferguson-Carruthers and Laura Swift, with the support of a wonderful creative team, this joyful production is packed with spectacular singing, energetic dancing and brilliant acting. Torbay Literary Festival: Sarah Pearse

Sarah Pearse: Opening Author Event Local author Sarah Pearse has taken the literary world by storm. Her debut novel ‘The Sanatorium’ reached No1 on The Sunday Times bestseller list and the subsequent two thrillers in the trilogy, ‘The Retreat’, and ‘The Wilds’, have now sold well over 1.5 million copies together. It is fitting that a former Torquay Girls Grammar school pupil should be the festival’s first ever author. As well as talking about her books, we will explore Sarah’s writing process and what has helped her succeed as a novelist. Torbay Literary Festival: Reader's Theatre - Sea Themed Adventures

Reader’s Theatre: Sea-themed adventures for 6-11 year olds Join us for an interactive, sea-themed Reader’s Theatre experience. Through poetry, picture books and dramatic extracts, children will explore rhythm, character and atmosphere – bringing texts to life through expressive reading and performance. The session builds towards a joyful final showcase, where voices combine in celebration of story. Suitable for all primary-aged children and their families, and primary teachers exploring Reader’s Theatre strategies. Helen Prince is an English teacher, literacy adviser and former senior leader with over 25 years’ experience. Author of the Boost Your Vocabulary series by OUP, she is also the ‘Word-Up’ podcast host for Oxford Education, and co-author of 50 Ways with Oracy. She works internationally as a children’s story presenter for schools across China. Working nationally on English GCSE reforms, she champions story-led approaches that build confident readers and powerful young voices. Rebecca Underwood spent 25 years teaching and leading across the primary phase, specialising in Early Years. A former Co-Headteacher and School Improvement Lead for Teacher Development and EYFS within a large Multi-Academy Trust, she is now a Research Impact Assistant at the National Institute of Teaching.

Torbay Literary Festival: Kathy Lette, Unleashed on Torbay

Kathy Lette: Unleashed on Torbay Kathy Lette is a force of nature. The Australian and British author came to prominence in 1979 with her novel ‘Puberty Blues’; she has since written a further 17 novels, the latest being ‘The Sisterhood Rules’ which Nicole Kidman has described as ‘Deliciously rude’. Kathy’s novel ‘Mad Cows’ was made into a film starring Joanna Lumley and Anna Friel, and her writing his extremely highly regarded for both it’s humour and insight. Not afraid to voice her opinion, our audience can expect outspoken views and a lot of fun. She is a huge champion of amongst other things: equality, human rights and physical and mental health and regularly appears on television. We will also explore her close friendships with people like John Mortimer, Kylie Minogue and Barry Humphreys.
