A Pint Of Porter: The Cole Porter Songbook

Doors: 3pm Music: 3.30pm Line-Up David Miller - Saxophone Eric Lounsbury - Trumpet Michael Richardson - Piano Duncan McKenzie - Bass Thiago Borella - Drums Laima Ulozaite - Vocals ABOUT A celebration of the music written by one of the great Broadway composers. Cole Porter penned some of the most iconic tunes in the 'Great American Songbook', many of which took on a second life as vehicles for jazz improvisation loved by greats like Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker and Oscar Peterson, all of whom recorded entire albums of his songs. Join us as we play a selection of his compositions and celebrate his accomplishments. Following on from the band's previous sell out shows at the Vortex featuring the music of Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk, they return to present a celebration of another of the all time jazz greats. Expect some well known favourites and a few less commonly played tunes as we spend an evening with one of the esteemed figures of 20th century music.

Since releasing her debut album, The Whole Damn Plan 2024, with The Olivia Cuttill Quintet, Olivia has toured the UK playing esteemed venues such as Ronnie Scotts, Howard Assembly Room and South Bank Centre. Olivia also plays in Jazz FM Innovator of the year nominee ‘Ferg’s Imaginary Big Band’ and with Northern Line 2024 winner Tom Harris. Olivia’s second album, ‘…And Writing And Singing And Tunes To Be Swingin’ was chosen as Jazz FM’s album of the week, was played live on BBC 3 and featured in Jazz Wise magazine and more. The release was celebrated with a 10 date European tour. As the third generation to pursue music in her family , jazz and blues are deeply rooted in Olivia’s heritage. Heavily influenced by the sounds of New Orleans, inspired by Louis Armstrong and Dr John and the song writing of Nina Simone and Randy Newman, her sound is rich with soul. Olivia’s approach to composition story telling and improvisation seamlessly bleed into one, gleaming with conviction, character and captivation.

Drawing on a tradition associated with figures such as Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano and Coleman Hawkins, the band performs original contrafacts alongside pieces by composers including Ben Webster, Horace Silver and Warne Marsh among others. Having won the Dankworth Prize in 2021 and the Eddie Harvey Arranger Award in 2020, the band will be playing his exciting original music alongside inventive arrangements. Influenced by his compositional heroes such as Jim McNeely, John Hollenbeck, Maria Schneider and Slide Hampton, Tom’s music also draws on 20th century classical approaches in its rich harmony, structure and attention to detail. This jazz quartet features long-time collaborator Tom Rivière on double bass, distinguished drummer Tim Giles, and acclaimed New York–based pianist David Berkman. Together, they present a programme of jazz standards alongside original compositions by both Reiss Ellis Beckles and David Berkman. Expect an evening of refined musicianship, subtle interplay and spontaneous moments, showcasing four distinctive musical voices coming together for a rare and memorable live performance.' David Berkman (Piano) is an acclaimed New York-based pianist and composer, celebrated for his imaginative playing and strong sense of swing. Berkman has performed with numerous jazz luminaries including: Sonny Stitt, Tom Harrell, Brian Blade, the Vanguard Orchestra, Cecil McBee, Dave Douglas and Chris Potter. A leading figure in contemporary jazz, Berkman’s work blends sophistication with emotional clarity, making him a standout presence on any stage.

Blending vocal and instrumental styles, with a particular emphasis on vocal harmonies, they bring a reflective, relaxed, and joyful energy to the music. Inspirations include Nubya Garcia, Elena Pinderhughes, Ezra Collective, Gregory Porter, and Ahmad Jamal. Members are currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music and are also members of Tomorrow’s Warriors, and the band itself began as part of the Tomorrow’s Warriors Emerging Artists program. Kikimiki has played at We Out Here Festival, Brick Lane Jazz Festival, The London EFG Jazz festival, Next Door Records, The Crypt and The Jazz Sanctuary. Drawing from a wide range of influences such as Radiohead, Björk and Aphex Twin, their sound is immersive and rich in texture. Electric instruments and effects craft expansive soundscapes that shift from serene, ambient moments to powerful prog-rock grooves. Known for blending multiple songs into one, DREAMSCAPES seamlessly combine improvisation with intricate structures, pulling audiences into a deep, multi-layered journey.​ Each performance is distinct, offering an experience that’s as much felt as heard. After releasing their self-titled EP in January 2024, DREAMSCAPES headlined at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and completed their debut UK tour in September, well-received by audiences around the country. With support from Arts Council England, they have been working on their first full-length album in collaboration with producer Chris Hyson to be released in April 2026, supported by a UK/EU tour. She began playing trumpet at five and discovered quartet, formed through Tomorrow’s Warriors, performs her original compositions and arrangements inspired by bebop, blues and free jazz. The Klara Devlin Quartet has appeared across numerous jazz venues and festivals, including Ronnie Scott’s Late Late show, The Jazz Café, Jazz In The Round, Pizza Express Soho, JazzLive at the Crypt and performances at the Brick Lane, We Out Here and Brecon Jazz festivals. In the words of Tony Kofi: “Klara Devlin, remember her name, she is in my opinion one of the most amazing and unique new trumpet voices to emerge onto the UK jazz scene. To coin the famous quote ‘if ya ain't got it in ya, ya can't blow it out’. Klara Devlin definitely has it, and definitely blows it out of her horn! So Family Band doesn't recreate the work of Ornette Coleman and others, but shares its powerful and freewheeling momentum - moments of fierce intensity, introspection and the blues all combining into an emotionally complex and often cathartic whole.
