A Celebration of The Life and Music of Richard Turner

Doors 7:45 PM, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music Line-up: Mike Chillingworth - Alto Saxophone Tom Farmer - Double bass Josh Morrison - Drums About Tonight, we will honour Richard Turner, the brilliant trumpeter, composer, pillar of the London Jazz community. Though Richard tragically passed away in August 2011 at just 27 years old, his legacy endures. As we approach the 15th anniversary of his passing, the remaining members of his quartet, Round Trip, return to the stage. Alongside special guest artists, they will perform the entirety of the band's self-titled debut album - Richard’s sole recorded work as a bandleader. This tribute concert also celebrates the album’s long-awaited debut on digital streaming platforms. For the concert, all tickets will be donated to Mind (registered charity number 219830).

Drawing on the rich traditions of jazz history and global musical influences, he has developed a voice that is both original and compelling. Today, he joins forces with the brilliant rising star of the UK jazz scene, vocalist Annie Majin, for a performance that promises innovation, energy, and musical chemistry. Since graduating from London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music - where he was invited on a full scholarship- Zhenya has carved a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes. He has worked with some of today’s most forward-thinking musicians, including Eric Harland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tim Lefebvre, Chris "Daddy" Dave, Alex Sipiagin, William Parker, Aaron Parks, Joseph "Foley" McCreary (of Miles Davis fame), and Larry Grenadier. Zhenya has performed at many prestigious jazz festivals and concert venues around the world, building an international reputation through extensive touring across both Europe and South America. He has recorded more than six albums with his groups Smiling Organizm, Never Group, and JZ Replacement. His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio as well as on national radio stations across Europe.

His music is a blend of his Caribbean roots with the harmonic and improvisational complexities of jazz, creating a lively and eclectic meld all his own. Born in Trinidad, Leon Foster Thomas has proven through his albums and performances that the steel pan has the musical sophistication to be taken as seriously in the jazz universe as the more well-known vibraphone. Winner of the World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet competition of 2002 and 2004, critics laud him as “…masterful with impeccable musicianship” (When Steel Talks); “a benevolent wizard” (Venice Magazine). Leon has collaborated with legendary artists in the jazz scene and beyond including Hugh Masekela, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Vince Mendoza, Dolly Parton, John Beasley, Mino Cinelu, Orphy Robinson, Cyril Neville, Ky-Mani Marley and many more. He has performed at internationally renowned venues such as New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Adrienne Arsht Center of the Performing Arts in Miami, and Moscow’s International House of Music. He also played a significant part in Her Late Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.

Together they are creating a fully improvised compositions as they explore unique melodies, intimate sonic spaces, textures and meditative grooves influenced by the wide variety of music the two have assimilated into their sound. Following their EU tour and second sold out release the two will celebrate their third limited release with a three day residency hosting some of UK unique voices! From Indian and north African inspired rhythms and all the way back to raw ecstatic melodies, the two are incorporating a wide palette of instrumentation including double and electric bass, bass clarinet, tenor sax, bamboo flutes, Tibetan singing bowls, percussion, voices and electronics they create musical worlds that take the listener on a unique spiritual and emotional journey striking the balance between song based forms and open structures. This special three day residency will see them collaborate with some of their favourite musicians, allowing improv and experimentation to predominate. Each night will begin with a duo set by Earth and Bones followed the second set inviting guests to an improvised conversation.

Pat Thomas is a composer and pianist, widely recognised as a leading figure in contemporary improvised music. He is renowned for his distinctive, percussive style of playing, and for weaving a wide range of influences like reggae, jungle, and Sufi philosophy into compositions and performances. Over the course of his career he has collaborated with a wide range of jazz and improv luminaries, from Mike Cooper, Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley, and Evan Parker, to more recent avant-figureheads like Moor Mother and Matana Roberts. John Edwards is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others.

You can expect to hear arrangements and transcriptions of compositions by Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, Thelonious Monk, Wynton Marsalis, and many more, with these incredible musicians putting their own stamp on the music, drawing from influences far and wide. Sam Glaser, James Copus, Tom Barford and Olli Martin have known each other as friends and musical colleagues for over 15 years. Having studied together at the Royal Academy of Music, and having been house-mates for several years, this collaboration is long overdue. Each have pursued their own path musically and received recognition for their playing, and with the four of them at the front of this septet, you can expect a high-octane performance. They are joined by a tour-de-force rhythm section, comprising Will Barry, Will Sach, and Will Cleasby. These musicians, each renowned individually for virtuosic playing and limitless creativity, often come together to form one of the notorious rhythm sections in the UK.

Doors 10:30 PM, Music 11:00 PM - 2 sets of music Line-up: Donovan Haffner - Alto saxophone Laurel Fink - Tenor saxophone Laurie Milton - Piano Lorenzo Morabito - Double bass Jack Thomas - Drum kit About: The Haffner/Fink Quintet will be bringing exciting original music written by Donovan and Laurel. Donovan Haffner, winner of the ‘Jazz Newcomer’ category at the Jazz Parliamentary Awards 2025 is a south-east London born and bred alto saxophonist. When Aged 11, Donovan joined the highly respected Tomorrow’s Warriors Young Artist Development Programme and was mentored by Gary Crosby OBE, Binker Golding, and Alex Davis. He proved to be a stand-out talent and, by the age of 18, he was invited to tour Italy with multi-award-winning drummer Moses Boyd. Since then, Donovan graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, and has played with Jay Phelps, Charlie Stacey, Orphy Robinson and Balimaya. He has also performed with the Danish jazz pianist/composer Rasmus Sorenson and was selected by Tony Kofi to be part of, American jazz legend, Charles Tolliver’s Big Band, headlining at the Barbican as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. And Donovan is still very much part of the Tomorrow’s Warriors musical family, performing with both Nu Civilisation Orchestra and Jazz Jamaica. Donovan has also released his debut album ‘Alleviate’ with his own project. Laurel Fink is a 22-year-old tenor saxophonist from Berkeley, California.

At sixteen, she started her professional career with Ivy Benson’s All Girl Orchestra. Since then she has brought her distinctive sound to a wide range of projects, exploring many different musical styles. As part of the UK jazz scene she has worked with Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath, John Stevens, Dudu Pukwana, Evan Parker, Paul Dunmall Octet (featuring Keith Tippett and Tony Levin), Elton Dean’s Newsense (alongside legendary trombonists Roswell Rudd and Paul Rutherford), The Charlie Watts Big Band, and the Jazz Jamaica Big Band. Internationally she’s worked with McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley, Abdullah Ibrahim, Louis Moholo and James Blood Ulmer. Session and pop credits include Joan Armatrading, Elvis Costello, Eddi Reader and Paul Weller. With the horn section The Kick Horns, she has done session work with Rufus Wainwright, Blur, The Beautiful South, Jamiroquai, Dr John, Eric Clapton and many others. As a member of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra she toured worldwide and appeared on three albums: ‘Broadcasting from Home’, ‘Union Cafe’ and ‘Concert Program’. It was here that she met her partner and musical collaborator Jennifer Maidman.

At only 27 years old Alexandra is already one of the most talented young trumpet players on the international scene. Since winning the UK’s prestigious BBC Young Jazz Musician in 2016 she was catapulted into a busy high-profile career and has been captivating audiences ever since. Her awards include the British Jazz Awards “Rising Star” 2018, Keep an Eye International Jazz Awards “Best Soloist” 2023, 2nd place at the esteemed Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet competition 2023, Laurie Frink Career Grant winner 2022, Parliamentary Jazz Award nominee 2020, London’s 25 most notable under 25’s and most recently the Next Jazz Legacy 2025 Award through New Music USA Alexandra is a busy performer with her own outstanding bands of various sizes in leading venues in New York, London and beyond. She has performed at many jazz festivals worldwide including Montreux, North Sea, DC Jazz Festival, Unity at the Lincoln Centre, London, Love Supreme and was recently an artist in residence at the Guimarães Jazz Festival. She was a showcased performer/composer in the International Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT) with her trio in New York in 2022.
