Foot stool making day

We start the project by drawing around templates and cut the basic shapes. After cutting a square mortice we then make a through tenon and two triangular pegs to lock the sides of the stool. When finishing the project we use danish oil or wood stain to show the beauty of the Oak grain. This build is reasonably easy and should only take 6 hours with 30 mins for lunch. Tea is available all day.

Guitar Set-up (Electric)

On the Electric guitar set -up course please bring your guitar of choice and we will learn you how to set up the following. String Action, Fretboard relief, Intonation, Truss rod adjustment, Pick up height, Tremolo springs and Bridge setting. Please make sure your old strings are removed and your fretboard has been well cleaned before the set up. Jewellery box making day

This 1 day course is a great way to understand some of the finer woodworking needed to complete this Jewellery box. The box is made from Oak and Walnut inlay. We usually start with the 45 degree mitre saw then we use the table saw to make the grooves around the box and to create the inlay in the centre. Later we will cut the lid off the box and fit the hinges etc, we will then sand all surfaces and finish with some Danish oil. We then add the hinges and clasp. You can now take home your beautiful new box.

Window frame making day

On the window frame day course we will build a nice traditional frame with basic hand tools and some machinery. We will begin the day by making the groove (where the glass and bead would sit ) using the table saw. I will show the student a rebate grooving hand plane if time allows. With just a few hand tools we will mark out and cut the half-lap joints with a tenon saw then use a sharp chisel to clean up the joint. Only with attention to your marking lines will we get the result we need for a close fitting join. The frame is only 400mm x 400mm so it's easy for you to carry home. With these simple techniques you can build much bigger windows and also trust that the joints are strong and will last for many years. Please note there is NO GLASS used in this course!

Woodwork 4 days foundation course

Four days rota is as follows, (1-to-1 tuition). Day 1: Wood preparation with precise measurements and marking. Footstool build start to finish. Hand tools introduction including planes, chisels, marking gauges, steel rule, set squares, etc. Day 2: Choice of jewellery box making (or bandsaw box) including wood inlays and corner keys, wood sanding and finishing, including hinges, etc. Hardwoods and softwoods explained. Day 3: To make accurate wood joints by hand including half-laps, bridle joints, mitre joints and mortice and tenons, etc. Explain the use of Templates and Jigs in wood projects. Day 4: Bandsaw box making or scroll saw practical and how to keep your tools razor sharp using a diamond stone. All other 240 v machinery demonstrated like Mitre saw, Routers, Bandsaw, Planners, Drill press, Plunge saws, Dremel, etc. Finishing the day with some important health and safety measures to keep you safe. Woodwork Day Course

On the basic woodwork day we will make 3x joints by hand tools only. We will start with accurate marking and measuring using the set square, steel ruler and other marking tools. These joints will be very useful for your future wood projects and be very strong in practice, also it will give you confidence to tackle other types of more complex joins. No machinery is required to make these joints, as this course is designed to introduce the student to handcrafted woodwork but I will explain how machinery can be used, too. After lunch I will show you different hand plane techniques that I use, and demonstrate how to keep your tools sharp by creating the correct cutting angle, using some diamond stones and oil. Some students bring an old chisel to sharpen if they have one. The course is about 7 hours with 30 minutes for lunch. We start at 9.30am, but I'm flexible on times.

There is also going to be some time spent on safety and we shall show the importance of correct methods of working safely. We will change blades, bits, etc, on some machines and explain the functionality. If you are thinking of buying a machine, this course will give a better idea of what to expect when in use. The student will use the following machinery: 1. Bandsaw. 2. Router table. 3. Table saw 4. Plunge router. 5. Scroll saw. 6. Drill press. 7. Planner thickness 8. Oscillating sander. 9. Mitre saw (sliding compound). 10. Electric hand plane and Circular saw (5 inch blade).
