A Day of Enameling

Come and spend your day trying out the beautiful art of enameling with local enamel artist Heather Croft. Whether you have previous experience or if this is your first time, all are welcome. Work with recycled copper and vitreous enamel (ground glass) and watch the magic unfold when fired in the kiln. You will be shown how to use decals, scrafitto techniques, glass stringers and or millie fiore, silver leaf and silver foil, lustres and stencils to create your own unique pieces. Try Your Hand at a Potter's Wheel

We've all seen skilled potters take a round, moist, lumpy clump of clay, lob it into the centre of their potter's wheel and then use their hands and thumbs to form fabulous shapes. Demi Moore made it look easy and many of us have long harboured a desire to have a go too! During this one day workshop you will share a potters wheel between two and alternate between throwing and decorating a range of pots. Claude will guide you through the basics, and during the day we hope your confidence and skills will develop as you create a collection of pots to be proud of. Your work will stay with us to air dry and fire in the kiln. You will be able to collect your work a few weeks later or if necessary it can be shipped to you for a small extra charge. Coptic Stitch Book Binding

Join book artist Ruth McCann for a hands-on day exploring the beautiful and historic art of Coptic stitch bookbinding, a versatile and elegant binding style known for its exposed, decorative stitching and ability to lie perfectly flat when opened. Morning Session: Foundations and Preparation The day begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of bookbinding, including understanding paper grain direction, paper folding techniques, and how these affect the structure and flexibility of a finished book. Learners will fold multiple sections (also called signatures) and carefully pierce sewing holes in preparation for stitching. Participants will then move on to designing their book covers, selecting from a range of decorative papers and book cloths to create two unique front and back boards. Along the way, Ruth will introduce a variety of traditional bookbinding tools and materials, explaining their purpose, care, and use within the craft. Afternoon Session: Sewing the Coptic Stitch After a break for lunch, the class will focus on the highlight of the day - Coptic sewing. Learners will stitch together their prepared sections and covers using the traditional chain-linked Coptic stitch, creating a durable and visually striking binding that showcases the beauty of hand sewing. Throughout the afternoon, Ruth will demonstrate key techniques, provide one-to-one support, and share tips on maintaining even tension and alignment.

Mosaic on Slate

Join expert tutor Ruth Wilkinson to learn the basic techniques in mosaic creation. This course is designed for complete beginners or those with a little more experience. You will learn the basic direct method of mosaic and have a completed piece to take home. The mosaics will be suitable for both interior and exterior. Patchwork for the Impatient

Join Durham based artist Betty Brown for a fun day breathing new life into colourful second hand fabrics. This isn't a cosy evening in front of the fire stitching patches the size of 50p pieces. This is for those of us with demanding jobs/partners/families/dogs, who want a patchwork quilt and WANT IT NOW. Betty will show you how to take the pain out of both the decision-making and process, rendering you a Lean Mean Quilt-Making Machine! You will make blocks for a quilt and also learn systems for making crazy patchwork, a beautiful stole or wrap and several other lovely ideas. Bring as many pairs of 9" squares of fabric (ie 2 squares OF THE SAME FABRIC) as you like - cottons are the easiest to use. If you have the squares pre-cut it will speed you up on the day but equally not a problem to do during the session. Betty will have some fabric on offer too if you want to swap around a bit. And bring your trusty sewing machine, thread and kit. There isn't a charge for materials unless you want to use any of Bettys supplies but it will be very low cost - something like 50p for a pair of 9" squares. All abilities welcome. Moving away from realism- flowers

Yarn Hooking

Come and enjoy a relaxing day of yarn hooking with Carole Rennison. Learn about yarn hooking, how it differs from traditional rag rug hooking and what gorgeous, finely detailed creations you can make. You will be working on fine weave hessian, with a small hooking tool and using gorgeous colours of carpet yarn to create your unique picture of a bee, butterfly, bug or farm animal using one of Carole's "all you will need" kits. Using either the embroidery hoop that comes with the kit or a custom made hooking frame, which is yours to keep, you will start the day learning this simple hooking technique on a sample piece of hessian. Once you feel you have mastered the technique, you can choose colours for your animal and start hooking your picture. No need to worry about the design as Carole's kit includes the basic design. Once you get into the swing of yarn hooking, it can be the most relaxing and therapeutic process. You won't finish the picture on the day but you will certainly have all the knowledge and materials to complete the design at home.

Beautiful Birds from Broken Bits

Join mosaic artist Lisa-marie Newman to learn the rewarding process of Picassiette mosaic creation. Picassiette is from the French phrase ‘Pique – Assiette’, meaning ‘stolen from plate’ and is a wonderful way of using up broken/damaged ceramics and china, old unused tiles, along with other ephemera such as jewellery, buttons and shells. This course is suitable for complete beginners, those with a little experience or those who wish to learn the tips and tricks of utilising crockery and found objects in an artful way. Lisa-marie is a qualified art teacher and will guide you through the basic direct method of mosaic application, with insight and advice along the way to support your own design. The first hour will be spent deciding your design and mapping it out onto the bird templates provided. There will be plenty of inspirational images available and you will be able to complete a large bird or several smaller pieces. Lisa-Marie will then demonstrate safe ‘smashing’ and breaking processes as well as a variety of cutting techniques before you begin your creation. There will be a vast choice of whole crockery and pre-cut pieces to choose from, as well as more traditional tiles and decorative elements. The grouting process will also be demonstrated, step by step on the day.

Ceramic Hare

Join ceramic sculptor Suzie Wright to create your own unique small hare from white stoneware clay. The clay used for this workshop is rich, smooth and just lovelyto use! Whether yours is moon gazing with ears down or alert with ears up, you can make him or her as expressive as you wish. As part of a small group, you'll get plenty of help from Suzie, with guidance and demonstrations at each stage. Although all hares must be seated due to the constraints of building in just one day, your hare can be an individual and and you can create your personal artistic interpretation. You will also have the opportunity to use coloured slips to add detail and character. No two hares will be exactly the same, that's for sure! Your stoneware clay sculpture will taken away by Suzie to dry out, be glazed and high fired. Once returned to you around three weeks later, it will be safe to put outside in the garden if you want. All the tools and materials necessary will be provided. Hares will measure approx 6 inches. Please note that there is a £18 materials charge payable to the tutor on the day.
