Unexplained Deaths at the Villa - Talk by Michael Fulford

Unexplained Deaths at the Villa Talk by Michael Fulford Over many years of excavation at the villa, archaeologists have uncovered a number of disarticulated human remains. Scientific dating now suggests that these individuals may belong either to a single dramatic event in the late Roman period or to several very closely spaced episodes. In the absence of any formal burial, raising difficult questions about the circumstances of their deaths. In this talk, Michael will explore the possible explanations for these findings. Was it disease or the likelihood of multiple killings ,potentially even a massacre. We will look at what archaeology can and cannot tell us, and how these discoveries fit into the wider historical context of the late Roman era. The session will also include an update on our ongoing research into the possible location of a Roman harbour associated with the site, including preliminary results from the coring work carried out last year. Heritage Talk, museum Tour and Short Recital As part of Fairest Isle Festival (17th and 18th century music on the Isle of Wight) enjoy this special event with insights into Roman life in Britain with a talk, tour of our beautifully preserved mosaic floors and extensive collection of Roman archaeology – along with a rare opportunity to hear live music in the historical setting of one of the finest Roman sites in the UK. After insights from Pat Barber Head Guide, join for a recital presented by Kinga Ujszaszi and Kristiina Watt which explores the turbulent musical landscape of 17th-century Italy. This was a time when compositional and instrumental styles and techniques were changing at arguably the fastest rate in Western classical music history. Wars raged between the various city-states, and plagues swept across the region at regular intervals. From this backdrop emerged a uniquely instrumental style: the stylus phantasticus. This free and unrestrained approach to composition is bound to nothing—neither to words nor to a fixed melodic subject—leaving plenty of space for performers to improvise and to make each performance distinctively unique.
