Drop in Session with PC Steve Hull

We’re delighted to welcome PCSO Steve Hull to the museum on Wednesday the 15th of April  for a relaxed drop‑in session. Come along for a chat, ask any questions, or just say hello. Got a bike? Steve will also be offering free bike marking. Any bikes marked on the day will be registered with the National Bike Register, the UK’s official cycle database used by every police force to help identify stolen and recovered bikes. Drop-in Session “In Case Of Death

New community drop-in “In Case Of Death” launches at Brading Roman Villa A new monthly community initiative is launching on Saturday 18 April at 2pm at Brading Roman Villa, offering a welcoming space to talk openly about death, dying, and the practical aspects that come with it, such as planning ahead and making arrangements. “In Case Of Death” is a free, informal drop-in session designed to make conversations about end of life feel natural, approachable, and even uplifting. The sessions aim to break down taboos and encourage people to share thoughts, questions, and experiences in a relaxed and supportive environment. Far from being sombre, the gatherings are intended to be positive and life-affirming. Alongside meaningful discussion, there will be laughter, warmth, and connection. Each month will feature a different theme, with occasional guest speakers or activities to help explore topics in engaging and practical ways. The sessions will be facilitated by experienced volunteers with backgrounds in grief support, sudden loss, long-term illness, and end-of-life care, including death doula work. Their combined experience helps create a space that is both understanding and gently guided.

Join Lucy Bell for a Sketching Workshop theme ‘Toys’ The two-hour session, led by artist Lucy Bell, will focus on sketching toys. The sessions offer a relaxed environment where you can connect with your surroundings through mindfulness and creativity. Unexplained Deaths at the Villa - Talk by Michael Fulford

Unexplained Deaths at the Villa Talk by Michael Fulford Over many years of excavation at the villa, archaeologists have uncovered a number of disarticulated human remains. Scientific dating now suggests that these individuals may belong either to a single dramatic event in the late Roman period or to several very closely spaced episodes. In the absence of any formal burial, raising difficult questions about the circumstances  of their deaths. In this talk, Michael will explore the possible explanations for these findings. Was it disease or the likelihood of multiple killings ,potentially even a massacre. We will look at what archaeology can and cannot tell us, and how these discoveries fit into the wider historical context of the late Roman era. The session will also include an update on our ongoing research into the possible location of a Roman harbour associated with the site, including preliminary results from the coring work carried out last year. Monthly Natter with Age UK On the second Thursday of every month, the Forum Café will be hosting Age UK Isle of Wight (AUKIW) for an informal monthly drop-in session. AUKIW provides information and support not just for older adults but for anyone aged 50 and above, as well as their families and carers. Their services encompass a wide range of support options, including assistance for those living with dementia and memory loss, home help, hospital discharge support, goal setting, information and signposting, befriending services, and volunteer opportunities. With a wide range of services, the charity welcomes any queries. If they are unable to support you directly, their signposting services can offer valuable guidance. Fairest Isle Festival Talk and Music

Heritage Talk, museum Tour and Short Recital As part of Fairest Isle Festival (17th and 18th century music on the Isle of Wight) enjoy this special event with insights into Roman life in Britain with a talk, tour of our beautifully preserved mosaic floors and extensive collection of Roman archaeology – along with a rare opportunity to hear live music in the historical setting of one of the finest Roman sites in the UK. After insights from Pat Barber Head Guide, join for a recital presented by Kinga Ujszaszi and Kristiina Watt which explores the turbulent musical landscape of 17th-century Italy. This was a time when compositional and instrumental styles and techniques were changing at arguably the fastest rate in Western classical music history. Wars raged between the various city-states, and plagues swept across the region at regular intervals. From this backdrop emerged a uniquely instrumental style: the stylus phantasticus. This free and unrestrained approach to composition is bound to nothing—neither to words nor to a fixed melodic subject—leaving plenty of space for performers to improvise and to make each performance distinctively unique.
