Children will explore the medium of printer’s ink to create intricate prints of plants and plant scenes. When they have finished their compositions, they will turn their efforts to making an album to house their prints. They may even choose to write the botanical, or Latin names alongside the print completing the look of an antique book of specimens. During the workshop, the instructor will also talk about the importance of plants in the archaeological record and what the presence of certain types of plants can tell archaeologists.

Drawing on evidence from the site, Flora will explain the grain samples found here, what they were used for, and what they tell us about diet and farming. Learn about the different crops grown by the Romans, how they were processed, and their importance in cooking and daily life. Flora will also explore the wider role of plants at the villa, looking in detail at the many ways they could be used; from food and medicine to practical and everyday purposes. Visitors can take part by picking up a spotter sheet and exploring the site to identify plants and features for themselves, making connections between the landscape today and its use in the past.
