As we go we will record what we find to feed back into the Big Butterfly Count organised by the charity Butterfly Conservation. Rangers from the National Trust, Bug Life, Pine Marten Project and the Bovey Hedgehog group will be on hand to offer fun activities and games for all the family. Heritage Open Days at Dartmoor Prison Museum

As part of Hertiage Open Days 2026, Dartmoor Prison Museum will be conducting free guided tours to the two prisoner of war cemeteries at the rear of the prison. Dartmoor Prison was built to house prisoners from the wars with Napoleon and later on served to house US priosners from the little known War of 1812. During thsi time around 1500 prisoners died and they are commemorated in the tow cemeteries. This area is normally off limits to the general public or are organised as part of a pre-booked tour. The tour commences in the Museum car park and proceeds around the outside of the prison walls where you will hear some anecdotes about the prison itself before arriving at the cemeteries, where you will hear how and why they came about. Speaker Series - Stephen Powles - Otters

"Otters - Coming to a River Near You" with Stephen Powles Following Stephen's recent sell out talk at Paradiso, join award‑winning wildlife photographer and conservationist Stephen Powles for a lively and insightful journey into the natural world. In this facinating Otter talk, Stephen covers (amongst other things) an otter's amazing design features, their behaviour, signs to look out for and their population crash plus subsequent recovery. At the end there is a short piece on Hammer Scar, a female otter that unintentionally became habituated to Stephen and with whom he made four TV appearances. A former vet, Stephen changed career to pursue his lifelong passion for wildlife, photography and conservation. His work has appeared on television, in the national press and has earned major awards. Much of his photography focuses on the fascinating wildlife found in and around his Devon home.
